Round 7: Sensationally the fight is over and Lewis it appears has been declared the winner - the referee clearly feels the cut was caused by a punch. Klitschko just can't believe it and it's pandemonium. Looks like Lewis is still the champion but we await the official verdict. There's bad blood between the two camps in the meantime and Klitschko is very unhappy with what's happened since the end of the sixth. Klitschko waves to the crowd inside the Staples Center and gets a huge ovation. Lewis sits quietly in his corner as Klitschko milks the ovation from the crowd. Massive boos from the fight fans and they are very unhappy with the unsatisfactory end to the fight. It's official - Lewis wins by technical knockout but Michael Buffer's announcement is met only with jeers and boos from the crowd.
Round 6: Klitschko comes out for the sixth and we're about to reach the halfway stage of a fascinating title fight. LA has waited for a long time to see a heavyweight championship decided, and it's been worth it. The challenger is again boxing well in the sixth and scores again with a right. But all of a sudden Lewis blasts Klitschko with a beautiful uppercut. But the challenger takes it on the chin and still comes back for more. Those people who doubted Klitschko's bottle before the fight are eating humble pie now. Looks like there's blood from Klitschko's mouth now - probably a result of that hammer blow of an uppercut from Lewis. Now the pair both hold on and clearly they're starting to feel the pace. Klitschko bulls Lewis across the ring but the champion smiles. Now it's a wrestling match before Lewis scores with another uppercut to end the round. Halfway of a super fight and this one could go either way.
Round 5: The Klitschko corner has managed to stem the flow of blood for now from that horrible cut to the Ukrainian's left eye. Out for the fifth and can Lewis regain control after that disappointing fourth round? Klitschko tries to score with an uppercut, but then Lewis counters with a cracking left and scores. Now the champion is hammering body shots to the rib cage of Klitschko. Then he misses with an overhand right. Klitschko scores with a good left hook and Lewis again appears to be in a bit of trouble. Maybe carrying that 18st 4lbs is causing a bit of fatigue for Lennox. Lewis glances a big right off the temple of Klitschko - just as well for the Ukranian it didn't land flush. Lewis goes up on his toes for the last 20 seconds of the round, and now it's more work for the Klitschko corner. It looks as though he has a cut to his cheek as well as his eye.
Round 4: Klitschko comes out for the fourth with Lewis seeing as well as scenting blood. That bad cut means that surely the challenger must be looking for a quick finish here. The fighters wrestly each other to the floor and Klitschko appears to kick out at Lewis. The champion is trying to find his range again, and this round has been a quiet one so far. Lewis keeps dropping that left hand and is leaving himself open occasionally. Klitschko, who looked in big trouble at the end of the third, has come out looking much better here. This is a decent comeback as he continues to flick out the jab. Into the final half-minute and a fairly even round - Klitschko maybe just shades it.
Round 3: So far Lewis has been defensively poor and far too open against an opponent who is looking very confident. Now the champion goes for it and attacks at the start of the third. Klitschko holds and the action lulls. Klitschko is cut by his left eye, but is still using that left jab well. It's a bad cut to Klitschko's left eye and that is already hampering the challenger. Klitschko tries a left-right combination but Lewis is starting to find the right range with that left jab. Into the final minute of the third and this is a much better round for Lewis after the perils of the second. The tide could be turning here. Klitschko is cut and the Lewis jab is starting to work very effectively. Klitschko, to give him credit, is still trying to dominate the fight. Lewis misses with a big overhand right as the bell goes to end the third. Now Klitschko's corner must get to work on the cut and he appears dispirited. The cut is a horrible gash and in time that could end the fight.
Round 2: Into the second after a fascinating opening three minutes. Again Klitschko tries to establish the jab. Another big right from Klitschko and he's started really well. This doesn't look like being an easy night for the Brit. Klitschko has shown good hand speed when unloading with the right, and maybe Lewis is suffering from a bit of ring rust. Klitschko hammers home with another right and Lewis is in big trouble in the second. He wants to hold the Ukrainian and is on wobbly legs. Lewis is hanging on for dear life as Klitschko confidently looks for more gains. Lewis does hit back with a good left jab but Klitschko comes back again. Cracking second round and it doesn't look like this one will last too much longer. But who wins is another matter. Lewis is gambling with big shots and is leaving himself wide open to Klitschko's bombs. Lewis is again on unsteady legs as the bell goes to end the second.
Round 1: The waiting is over inside the Staples Center and after more than a year out of the ring Lennox Lewis is back. The Briton, heavier than ever at 18st 4lbs, looked relaxed and confident in the preliminaries while challenger Vitali Klitschko looked nervous. The bell goes to start the bout and Klitschko starts by pawing out a left hand. Lewis comes back with a right. The pair clinch in centre ring. A circumspect opening minute from both fighters with little leather thrown. Klitschko tries an ugly right hook but can't connect. Klitschko strikes home with a right that just for a moment seems to trouble the champion. The Ukrainan challenger has found his feet quickly and seems to be gaining in confidence. Now he starts to flick out that left jab. Another good right from Klitschko and he's started the better of the two fighters. Again he forces Lewis back with another right hand. Lewis misses wildly with a right over the top. At last Lewis gets the jab working as the bell sounds to end the first. Probably Klitschko's round.
