Remember the good old days when people actually believed that the U.S. had massive gold reserves stored at Fort Knox?

So why does the U.S. put less gold than canada/other countries??

And why would anyone bother with the U.S. coins over Canadian?

You are still getting 1 troy oz. of gold in each coin. That's why the coin weighs 1.091 ounces. The reason they add other metals is to make the coin more durable and scratch resistant.

The breakdown of the metal content is 91.67% gold (22 karat), 3% silver, and 5.33% copper.

That's just the way the US govt. mint deiced to make them.

The Gold Canadian Maple Leaf and other govt. minted coins are .9999% pure, but they are softer and scratch/nick very easily. They must be handled with care. Most people keep them in sealed plastic cases that you can buy. ^!:
