They are a record high in terms of pure numbers, but not even close to the pct.of GDP.

What is relevant is the size of the deficit relative to the size of the total economy, not the raw number itself. The total domestic economy is the GDP or Gross Domestic Product.

In 1943, the deficit was 30.3% of GDP. In 1983 it was 6%. Today it is 3.5%, or about a TENTH of what it was in 1943 and almost half of what it was 20 years ago.

So, when the media uses the term “record deficit,” they are being deceitful, lying about the facts in an attempt to damage the president!

Pat: "They are a record high in terms of pure numbers but not even close to the pct. of GDP".

You are correct, sir. Republican poster boy Ronald Reagan set that mark for fiscal irresponsibility.

But your boy Dubya gets the record for largest swing in dollars from surplus left by Clinton to biggest deficit ever in pure monetary terms.

But hey, kenny boy lay, jeffrey skilling, dennis kozlowski, got their much needed tax cut while Bush cut combat pay and veterans medical benefits were slashed so it wasn't all for naught.

don't tell me tell those numbers Pat, tell GW Bush, he was the guy bragging about his policy would not increase the deficit ..... yet it did.

Maybe King George should have stated my policy will increase the deficit but don't worry America because the GDP % won't be as high.

If it is so little maybe George should work on paying it off.

This country would be like Mexico if Kerry was running the show right after 9/11...a trillion dollar hit to the economy.
Plus Enron which flourished in a phantom booming Clinton economy.

He would have taxed us to death like he already said he would and as his past record indicates.

One thing I wonder about Bush. How does he sleep at night knowing that in 2000; 500,000 (that would be 1/2 million) more Americans voted for Gore that for him. Yes--he won the electorial college. But, I would guess it doesn't bother him--since the ONLY mistake he EVER made was trading "Sammy Sosa".
