Borat,

It has already happened. It was called the Civil War. The response from the Union was to "protect" the states that seceded by forcing them to retake their "rightful" place. They had every right to secede but it was not honored. May you fry in Hell, Lincoln!

The rest of us can only hope and pray that it happens.

If the petri dish of all democratic economic and social ideas (california) were to secede from the union and already being 38 billion in debt. it would be a 3rd world country..Mexifornia....How long would the hollywood elite and limosine liberals stay in that country mmmmmm???...do you think they would be giving up their private jets, pools, limo's for the common good??mmmm???
NOOO...they would be asking for foreign aid.

The US would quickly run up a trade deficit with the Republic of California, there would not be any problem at all.

Take all the federal taxes Californians pay out of the federal budget, cut it in half and give it to the state..boom..thriving economy and less taxation than current rates.

High Tech, cultural, and massive agricultural exports? California would do just fine.

Tablarasa,

Obviously, you're either from or currently live in California. The main problem would still be there: energy. The state in which I live sells energy to California, and California also purchases energy from the Hoover Dam contract which probably would be null and void as a result of their independence. I'm sure a higher rate could be negotiated.

I don't think California could feed themselves for a while at least which is more imports. Automobiles, Fighter jets, launching their own satellites for telecommunications, etc. the list just goes on and on.

Actually, I am not from nor do I live there. I have lived there in the past though.

Perhaps you don't realize..California grows more than 30% of the national produce in the US(vegetables)?

California's power crunch is due to deregulation. Under a different government, I think thats easily solved.

Military? They would not need much of a military, the US would not let anyone take them over. (See Mexico, Costa Rica, other American Hemisphere countries for examples...and even Japan or the Philipines).

Sure, there would be a short period with some currency problems and setting up of systems, but I don't think it would be much of a problem. And I think they would quickly benefit from the lesser taxes, and show a trade advantage with the US very quickly.

Texas (I have also lived in Texas several times), on the other hand, would I think have large economic problems splitting from the Union.

It would not be that much of a boon actually. The state of California receives $ 0.86 in expenditures for every $ 1.00 it contributed to the federal budget (see here) so while there would be some money kicked back into the state economy, it would barely knock a dent in the crippling budget deficit California runs.

Texas receives $ 0.96 for every $ 1.00 it contributes to the federal budget, so seccession would be a slight economic boon to it as well. And since there is actually a seccession movement there and has been for years it is more likely to go before California (I mean that relative to the overall likelihood of any state actually seceding, which I think is fairly low.)

Tablarasa,

I'll concede your figure. Tomorrow, if I'm not too tired I'll see how large their cattle, pork and poultry industries are. Personally, I think winter produce is substandard at best, and inedible at worst. I bought about 7lb. of local tomatoes in July and just gorged myself because I knew that in 4 months the ability to get a good tomato would be gone.

I stand by all my remarks (even the food and especially the satellites). My reasoning is based on my own diet. Other than local produce and less than a handful of regional products that are made here, the percentage of local consumables is maybe 15%. That figure will vary between different people and circumstances, etc.
