Lovie Smith said he feels comfortable making Jameis Winston the Bucs starting quarterback because he "would never put a guy in that position if he wasn't ready for that."

"Jameis Winston will be our starting quarterback," Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith said Friday. "He'll take first reps tomorrow. We're excited about that."
The news about Winston is a switch from how the Bucs handled the quarterback position in the offseason. Although Winston got some first-team work, third-year pro Mike Glennon often worked with the starters.
But Smith said it's time to make Winston the starter.
"I would never put a guy in that position if he wasn't ready for that," Smith said. "A lot has been said about Jameis and mentors. Jameis doesn't need a mentor. Jameis is ready to take the reins and go with it."
Winston has been everything the Bucs thought they were getting when they drafted him out of Florida State. He has picked up the offense quickly and developed good chemistry with receivers Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans.
"A lot of things go into that," Smith said. "We've had a lot of evaluation of him. It's where we feel like he is. We brought him here to be our quarterback and we feel like he's ready to take this next step.
"I feel strongly about this. We feel like we've let Jameis go through a process in the offseason, getting limited reps and working with both groups. We put him in that position but eventually you have to put them in the lead position and let them go."

This is way premature... At least wait till after all the training camps and preseason games.

This is just a step in the wrong direction and IMO setting him up for failure!

Lovie has no idea what to do at QB , in his Chicago days " Rex is our QB" and " we gonna get of the bus runnin" however , he has no choice but to start the#1 pick, sure he will stick with him, even if it's painful.

Was there really an option that he wouldn't start? Titans also named Mariota the starter.

Starting Mccown last year was one of the best decisions he ever made.

Well he's twice the QB and brains as Winston...

When their teams met in the playoff Winston was far and away the better player. When it came time for the draft Winston was far and away the better prospect. If brains the players ability to diagnose coverage and read defenses than Winston is far and away the more intelligent of the 2.

Naming him the starter before camp is a no brainer.

Any idea of a QB battle or that the job is up for grabs is something you want to avoid. Unneeded distraction.

Mariota's skill set an brain for the game will transpire better to the next level, Winston's will not. I'm willing to bet on this, but the better bet may be both busting. Time will tell, but with Winston still in Florida, I know it's crab legs for dinner!

What owner who is smart enough to accumulate billions has a black qb and black head coach. You literally have 0 chance with that combo. Is there history that says I am wrong?

Who will fail more?

Mariotta or Winston? They both have obvious weaknesses and are 3rd round picks at best.

Possibly the most racist and ignorant statement ever posted on a sports forum....not an attack on your character but just an ignorant statement....

OK, will you answer now? See this is the problem, you get no real responses except " that's ignorant". I just asked for an example. I am not as dumb as you think I am. Give me an example. Lovie and Winston will be together tops of 2 years. Dumbass coach and a no self control qb. Sound like a winning combo?

When it comes to a decision Lovie makes ... well yea exactly

From the Tony Dungy tree.

Not sure why Lovie Smith has always gotten a pass for what many believe was underachieving with some of those Chicago teams & 2-14 his first year with Bucs, unlike Herman Edwards who is also from Dungy tree.

We Bucs fans are in for another long season...

Can't say I can think of a successful black qb/black coach combo either.
