The problem with Denver is that they were a .500 team last year who choked away their Division Championship.

With Shanahan as coach, Jay Cutler as QB & Bob Slowik as DC. None of those apply.

Now they have a team that is worse on offense,

Denver was 16th in PPG last year...and number is inflated b/c they averaged 40 PPG in their first 3 games. They will improve on that ranking in 2009. Orton doesn't have the raw talent that Cutler has but he will be a better decision maker. They will also fare far better on the ground. Shanny didn't know what he had in HIllis until he was forced to play him because RB's dropped like flies last year. Hillis & Moreno will make a powerful combo. Both have excellent hands as well.
It should also be noted that their entire OL remains in tact now that Wiegman re-upped. (anchored by perennial future pro-bowler Clady)

no better on defense,

Addition by subtraction. The main reason Shanny got his ass canned was his loyalty to Bob Slowik. A Mike Nolan schemed defense would be a couple PPG better with the exact same personnell. They upgraded their secondary big time with Hill, Goodman & Dawkins via FA & Drafting Smith. Front 7 still the big question but they are moving in the righ direction. Their PPGA will be better than in 2008.

players demanding trades,

Cutler wanted out because his buddy Bates got the axe along with Shanny & Slowik. The whole Cassell scenario simply gave Bus Cook his excuse to force the issue. The front office did a fine job in maximizing his value. Cutler's got the raw talent no doubt, but his boozing habit coupled with his diabetes may keep him from ever reaching his cieling.

Marshall is just posturing for more money, nothing more. He is underpaid at the moment but that's not going to change until he can get a grip on his off the field issues. The Broncos have already said "See you in camp". He will show up when the fines start racking up.

and a HC who aparently thinks he is the next coming of Bill Belichick, but who has not won a game in the NFL as of yet.

He hasn't lost one yet either. People are too quick to judge because Wiess, Crennel & Mangini didn't succeed instantly. He is his own man & should be judged as such.

I think Kansas City may beat them out for 2nd place, but we are talking about teams who may win 7 games tops,

You are not alone. Everybody is writing them off & they are a laughing stock in the national media. Fine by me. Nobody was giving Baltimore or Atlanta any good press last June either.

so who really cares?

I will when I drop a nickel on them at +700 next week to win the AFCW.
IMO, it's to big of a jump for KC or oakland to make in one year based on what they've done this offseason. SD is and should be the favorite but they have their own issues. Both teams finshed 8-8 last year and I believe it will be a close 2 horse race again this year based on the reasons I stated above. Tremendous value on Denver.

the problem with Cutler isnt his skills I think he's a good passer. He makes some bad decisions but that comes with time and experience. I think he's just a poor leader. He's not rallying the team behind him. He doesnt inspire his teammates. Kinda reminds me of Tony Romo I guess.

Orton is Orton. He's not great, he's not terrible. I'm taking a wait and see approach with Denver. I think they may start out slow and gain some momentum as the season wears on.

Cincy -2 in week 1 looks tempting right now though

It isn't even so much about what Denver does next year.

If you traded away a young Dan Marino, you don't say "Man, my 5-11 team could have been 9-7 this year".

It's a QB league and if Kyle Orton is going to be your starting QB then you are going to need the 2000 Ravens defense or 2002 Bucs defense to go along with him.

If Jay Cutler is your QB, when you peak your team out you could win with much less on defense.

The Bears probably won't be that good this year, Cutler has to learn the system etc., but once they build that team up and once he matures....

think about the home field advantage. Cutler has probably the strongest arm in the NFL. I know Jemarcus MIGHT be able to long toss it further, but I'm talking the whole package, deep outs, etc. Plus, Jemarcus isn't even a QB, he's just a freak that takes snaps.

So you are playing in Chicago in December, cold, 6 degrees outside and 40 mph winds. Who do you want, the strong armed home team QB, or the average armed QB from Florida?

Chicago is building a defense + QB cold weather football team and I'd like their chances to win much beter than that little twit coaching denver that got his ass handed to him by spagnulou in the super bowl.

Denver will be out of the playoffs by the end of November. I have already faded them against the Chargers at home and against Dallas at home. I gave 2 1/2 points in each game. That is easy money. I want ot thank all of you Denver fans in advance for putting money in my pocket this year. They now have the master of the 3 yard swing pass as their QB.

SAN DIEGO — There might be only one thing you can say more shocking about this NFL season than the Broncos are 6-0.
Kyle Orton: Pro Bowl quarterback.
Try that unlikely statement on for size. Did your tongue go numb? See? The Earth did not stop spinning on its axis.
And if you haven't already forgotten Jay Cutler, maybe it's time to burn that old No. 6 Broncos jersey at the bottom of your closet.
Because after Denver destroyed the myth of the San Diego Chargers as Super Bowl contenders with a resounding 34-23 victory for the entire football nation to see Monday night, the NFL quarterbacks whom Orton must be mentioned with right now are Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger.
It might be too early for Orton to make airplane reservations for the Pro Bowl, but it's not too early to ask:In addition to the draft picks Chicago gave up to acquire Cutler in trade, did the Broncos also get the better quarterback in the deal?
Orton completed 20-of-29 passes for 229 yards and two touchdowns, including an improvised 5-yard strike to Brandon Stokley with 2 minutes, 55 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to seal the win and probably ensure there's a pink slip in the near future for Chargers coach Norv Turner.
Orton also did something that Cutler never achieved during his time as the Denver quarterback: He left San Diego with a win.
"Thank goodness we have him. He has been just superb. He has stepped up to the plate when we needed him. None of these games have been easy, and he has made the plays we had to have," Stokley said.
Anybody remember what happened last time the Broncos were in this town? I can still see franchise owner Pat Bowlen giving a 1,000- yard stare in the locker room after a 52-21 debacle, while Mike Shanahan stood a few feet away trying to find the words to describe one of the worst season-ending meltdowns in league history.
"I wasn't here last year, obviously. But I know the past. We know the past as a team. It has kind of been a one-sided deal for the last few years," Orton said. "Divisional games are at a premium. You've got to play your best ball, especially on the road and 'Monday Night Football.' We pulled one out."
At halftime, the scoring could be broken down like this: Chargers 17, Broncos 5, Eddie Royal 12. Royal kept Denver in contention with touchdown returns on a San Diego kickoff and a punt, becoming the first man in franchise history to pull off both amazing feats in the same game.
With Denver clinging to a four- point lead in the fourth quarter, however, it was Orton who took over and marched the visitors, allowing Broncomaniacs who had invaded California to taunt disgruntled San Diego fans with a chant of "6-0!"
The best QB in the stadium on this autumn night? It wasn't Philip Rivers of the Chargers. There's a new sheriff in the AFC West, pardner.
The crucial 62-yard drive by Denver ended with a TD pass that shocked the man who caught it even more than the hapless San Diego defenders trying to stop it.
"It's a play we've probably run 100 times. And (Orton) never throws me the ball on the play. He never throws it to me. For some reason on that play, he did. And it was nice. I'm glad he did. I wasn't expecting it, that's for sure," said Stokley, who caught the football and rolled into the end zone underneath Chargers cornerback Antonio Cromartie.
This Orton guy is full
of surprises.
"And he throws the ball a lot harder than people give him credit for," Stokley said.
See? Even his own teammates tend to give compliments that Brett Favre might consider an insult.
Orton will never be so arrogant as to compare his arm strength to John Elway's.
He's not always pretty, but Orton is taking the Broncos someplace Cutler never took the team:
The playoffs.

Fox: Orton to start Broncos' season opener

Denver Broncos head coach John Fox ended any speculation during practice on Monday by naming Kyle Orton the team's starting quarterback for the regular season opener against the rival Oakland Raiders.

"We're going to name Kyle the starter against the Raiders," said Fox, who did not confirm whether Brady Quinn or Tim Tebow will serve as the primary backup.

Quinn was the second string signal caller in Saturday's preseason game against the Bills and finished with 130 yards, one touchdown and one interception on 10-of-16 passing. Tebow, meanwhile, attempted just two passes, completing one for 10 yards.

Orton has served as Denver's starting quarterback the last two years and has compiled at least 3,650 yards and 20 touchdowns each season.

Denver's selection of Tebow in the first round of the 2010 draft appeared to mark the end of Orton's days atop the depth chart. Tebow started three games last year and totaled seven touchdowns in those contests.

But the former Heisman Trophy winner from Florida has not progressed enough under Fox, causing Orton to remain Denver's No. 1 QB for the September 12th opener.

I havent watched much of Timmay this year, except for his work against the pathetic 2nd and 3rd string Dallas defense, but I was surprised he got the bump to 3rd string.

Reports buzzing that he may be headed for fourth string.
