The US Central Command released aerial video footage on Friday that it said showed US and coalition airstrikes on parts of Iraq and Syria in late January and early February.

The videos include one purporting to show coalition airstrikes carried out by Jordan in the vicinity of Al Hasakah, Syria.

Two other videos purport to show US-led airstrikes hitting an Islamic State bunker in the strategic stronghold of Mosul and an Islamic State productions facility near Al Qaim, Iraq.

Islamic State seized large areas in Syria and Iraq and declared a self-imposed Islamic caliphate last year but has come under strain after a series of defeats in Syria brought about in part by air strikes on its forces and infrastructure.

It was forced to withdraw from the Kurdish town of Kobani after four months of fierce fighting with Kurdish militia aided by US air support, and has lost ground to Syrian government and Kurdish forces elsewher

[h=3]Airstrikes, Kurdish Forces Push ISIL from Bridgeheads Near Mosul[/h]From a Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve News Release
SOUTHWEST ASIA, Feb. 9, 2015 – Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve airstrikes in support of the Iraqi government’s fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant aided in security forces from the Kurdish region seizing three bridgeheads on the west bank of the Tigris River north of Mosul in formerly ISIL-held areas, task force officials said today.
The coalition executed four close air support airstrikes Feb. 6 through yesterday to facilitate the maneuver of the Kurdish forces and their successful attack, officials said.
Advise-and-assist Teams Continue to Assist
In addition to airstrikes, coalition advise-and-assist teams continue to provide operational and intelligence assistance to Kurdish security forces which further enables them to successfully conduct offensive operations, officials added.
Kurdish peshmerga forces now hold the gains they have made, officials said, and are postured to retake additional territory near Mosul from ISIL.
“This most recent peshmerga operation is yet another example of how [ISIL] can be defeated militarily using a combination of well-led and capable ground forces enabled by coalition aviation and advise-and-assist capabilities,” said U.S. Army Lt. Gen. James Terry, the combined joint task force’s commander.

[h=3]Obama, Merkel Discuss Ukraine Situation, ISIL[/h]By Jim Garamone
DoD News, Defense Media Activity

WASHINGTON, Feb. 9, 2015 – The United States will continue to stand with nations around the world in sanctions against Russia for its actions in Ukraine, President Barack Obama said during a joint news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel today.
The two leaders met at the White House, where Merkel briefed the president on her recent discussions on the situation in Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Merkel and Obama will continue to seek a diplomatic resolution. “We are in absolute agreement that the 21st century cannot … have us stand idle and simply allow the borders of Europe to be redrawn at the barrel of the gun,” Obama said.
NATO Presence in Central, Eastern Europe
The United States and its NATO allies will continue building up alliance presence in Central and Eastern Europe, he said. The United States has rotated Army units through the Baltic Republics and Poland, sailed ships into the Baltic and Black seas and contributed aircraft to the Baltic Air Policing effort.
The president and Merkel discussed ongoing sanctions on Russia over its actions in Ukraine.
“We agreed that sanctions on Russia need to remain fully in force until Russia complies fully with its obligations,” he said. “Even as we continue to work for a diplomatic solution, we are making it clear again today that if Russia continues on its current course … Russia's isolation will only worsen both politically and economically.”
The two leaders also discussed ongoing coalition air operations against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant forces in Syria and Iraq. The United States and Germany “remain united in our determination to destroy” ISIL, Obama said.
He thanked Merkel for Germany’s assistance as part of coalition efforts against the terror group.
“In a significant milestone in its foreign policy, Germany has taken the important step of equipping Kurdish forces in Iraq, and Germany is preparing to lead the training mission of local forces in Irbil,” the president said.

[h=3]Iraqi Security Forces Repel ISIL Attack[/h]By Claudette Roulo
DoD News, Defense Media Activity

WASHINGTON, Feb. 13, 2015 – An attempt by 20 to 25 Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant fighters to attack al Asad Air Base in Iraq was repulsed by “ready and able” Iraqi security forces, the Pentagon press secretary said today.

Pentagon Press Secretary Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby takes questions during a press briefing at the Pentagon, Feb. 13, 2015. Kirby updated reporters on recent attacks in Iraq by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant. DoD photo by Glenn Fawcett

(Click photo for screen-resolution image);high-resolution image available.
“The attempted attack was led, we believe, by at least several … suicide attackers,” Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby said. Early indications are that some of the attackers did detonate their vests, he noted, and the suicide attackers were followed by a second wave of about 15 fighters.
The admiral said the fighters reached the perimeter of the base, located in the Anbar province in western Iraq. “They were immediately engaged by members of the Iraqi army -- the 7th Infantry of the Iraqi army,” he added.
No coalition forces were injured in the attack, nor is there indication of Iraqi casualties, Kirby said.
Al Asad is a sprawling facility, he said. “It's basically a base of many, many bases inside. And at no time were U.S. troops anywhere near the fighting -- at least a couple of miles away. So, they might've heard shots being fired, but that would've been about it,” the admiral said.
U.S. troops are at al Asad as part of the train, advise and assist mission, Kirby said. He said that if the troops were to come under fire, they are authorized and equipped to defend themselves.
Iraqi Troops Pressure ISIL
In one of their first successes in months, Kirby said, earlier this week ISIL forces took the town of al Baghdadi, also in Anbar province. But, he noted, Iraqi security forces continue to operate throughout the region, putting pressure on ISIL forces.
“Nobody has underestimated, and we've all been very honest about the continued threat that this group poses, which is why we have to take it so seriously, which is why this advise and assist mission is so important,” the admiral said.
“When you look at what happened today, I think it proves that Iraqi security forces can fight effectively and can defend territory and ground when they're ready and they're able. And in this case, they were ready and able,” he said.
ISIL Steals to Survive
It’s important to keep the events in Anbar in perspective, Kirby said. The list released earlier this week by U.S. Central Command of destroyed ISIL equipment and vehicles is significant given ISIL’s limited ability to reconstitute their supplies.
“It's not like they've got, you know, a ready supply chain of armored personnel carriers just streaming across, and, you know, manufacturing capability to replace this stuff,” the admiral said. “It's not like they've got a team full of mechanics that can keep them running after they've been hit and broken.”
Kirby added, “These guys steal to survive. I mean, one of their chief sources of income is stolen money. They just move into an area and basically rob banks. And that's how they get a lot of their money. And when they're not capturing new territory, they're not robbing a whole lot of new banks.
“So there's a shelf life here on their material capability,” he continued. “They do not have the ability to reconstitute strength the way a normal armed force would.”
