<!-- START SYNOPSIS -->Rafael Benitez has urged his players to return to winning ways for the sake of the club's supporters - starting later today against Sunderland. <!-- END SYNOPSIS --></TD></TR><TR><TD class=med vAlign=top width=487 bgColor=#ffffff colSpan=2><!-- START BODY -->Liverpool fans have endured a torrid month with off the field troubles not being helped by a winless streak lasting five games in the Premier League as the Reds have slipped out of the top four.
With Sunderland visiting Anfield today Benitez knows the importance of a victory to lift the mood among the Reds' ever loyal followers.
"When in a difficult situation you need strong characters, and that can be the difference between a winning team and not," he says. "We need to show this, and I'm sure we have players of that mentality.
"Because we aren't winning it's easy for people to say you don't have the character throughout the team. But I am expecting something from the players now. When you lose, you are disappointed, especially when you have the support of the best fans in the world and they are showing that every game.
"We've shown when we were in a difficult situation in the Champions League, having to win against Besiktas, Porto and Marseille, that we have got through it before. We can do it. We need to find positives, and that is one. I've told the players, why can't we do it again?
"The players know they have a responsibility. There are a lot of people behind them and we need to improve our performance. We need to give 120 per cent now if we can.
"It's time for the staff and the players to give our supporters what they deserve."
