the real answer is to turn down the heat no more than 5 degrees. when u get home put it back to normal temps. Less stress and time on furnace.

Your wife is right.. It costs more to turn off the heat and turn it back on, then to keep it on.. Its 5 degrees outside thats to damn cold to turn it off.. Your lucky your pipes wont freeze then you would have a real problem........

Turning it off is not only wrong its dumb....reverse for a/c. if your house is 70 deg in the morning and u turn it off when u get home lets say its 45...it has to run for lets say an hr for it to get to 70.
Had in the morning u had lowered the stat to say 58. it would have ran for maybe 20 mins total the whole day to keep it there and when u got home it would take maybe 20 minutes to get it back to 70...
Her way it runs for 40 mins your way it runs for an hour plus you have to sit in sub 60 temps for 30 mins longer........Leave the heat alone and work on picking some winners how bout it !!!!!!!!!!

Id say your Wife is right this time..You shut the heat all the way off & your pipes might freeze... You shut the heat all the way off & you have to re-heat objects if your house too such as all that steel silverware ect.... Just turn it down to around 50 then U wont have so much to heat up.

You may be missing the point about this here issue Dog. It may not be about the temperature in the house, it be about the temperature in her heart. If you love her you need to turn up that there thermostat or you may end up out in the cold!
