What was the story behind NFL Primetime booting Sterling Sharpe?..I always liked him, although i don't mind Michael Irvin as his replacement?

agree with omar - stuart scott is nothing more than an EOE hie - a black man on payroll looks great! his lead-ins take forever and he always ants to do some sort of gestures with his eyes - despite the fact his right eye is glass - since the clumsy putz lost is a few years back trying to show how cool he is - and instead showing us all what a fool he is. if he was white - he'd be working somewhere else. congrats to him for talking black ghetto talk on the air - to the SMALL part of the audience that this applies to - a miniscule part of espn's audience. my hope is whoever wins "dream job" gets scott's job. scott is fingernails on the chalkboard annoying. as i have said for some time now, the remote control and MUTE button were invented with this clown in mind.

as for my opinions on some SC anchors:

Berman: i will NEVER have anything but great things to say about him. he was super cool to me and very nice to me and my bro. i heard he has changed - but to me he was great - so that is my opinion of him.

Dan Patrick: Ditto, Berman. as great a guy to work with as they come. very professional and warm and funny. and for those who hear him talking about his hoops abilities - he does have a lot. we are both about the same height and when we were on opposite teams, we were usually matched up against each other. when we got down low, there was a lot of pushing and shoving with both of us taking it and dishing it out.

Linda Cohn: as nice as person as they come - and very solid. met her in 1994 when in hartford for the nhl draft. after the first night, a bunch of us went to jim calhoun's place and met up with her and Tirico.

Mike Tirico: no longer does SC, but as smart and sharp a guy as they come. and he NEVER forgets a name. after i left in 12-91, i flew back out to hartford in june, 1994 for that draft. i am in cleveland waiting to catch a connecting flight to hartford, when i see tirico there. take in mind it had been 2.5 years since i worked at espn, but when i saw mike and said hello, he remembered my name 30 months later. amazing!

Kenny Mayne: again - doesn't do SC anymore - but i do like his dry sense of humor. met him when he was out in fontana for a race when he did nascar stuff.

as for the rest - toss a blanket over them - they are all the same - which is what espn likes.

as for sterling on primetime - from what i have heard - he wasn't well liked there - and wasn't well liked by those doing nfl work at espn. when the time came for espn to decide what to do with him - getting rid of him was the only one considered.

as for robfunk - deanna brooks does sports. i have met her MANY times and if we passed by each other on the street, she WOULD know my name without having to tell her/remind her what it is - and i would probably get a hug from her. she is 100% natural and one of the alltime nicest people you are ever going to meet. she has her own site: www.deannabrooks.com

the one on the far right - janelle - is also really nice and cool. she is 5'11" and has legs that never stop. i met her last year at some place in L.A. she has a wickedly dry and sarcastic sense of humor.

Espn hires jews or blacks first, even the jocks they hire all suck, talent comes second or maybe fourth or fifth with these people. Curtis Strange sucks, Bill Curry sucks, Peter Gammons annoying, Joe Miller annoying, Jaworkski annoying. The talent at that station is few and far between. They hire east coast people only.

Fox sports blows them away, we have Carolyn Hughes, Petyos Papadaykis, Barry Tomkins, Matt Stevens, TOm Kelly, Van Earl Wright

winky: You are dead-on about Stuart Scott. That moron is doing such a disservice to all of the young black kids in America who watch his stupid antics and try to emulate him. Why he chooses to make up words that sound like bad slang-jive-street-ghetto speak and act like the most uneducated human on the planet is beyond me. Whatever it was that Al Jaffe saw in him 10½ years ago is also way beyond the scope of anything I will ever in this lifetime be able to comprehend. Maybe he felt sorry because they both suffer the same lazy-eye affliction. Something in common to discuss during the interview, right?

How accurate was the book about ESPN, I still remember watching those UConn soccer Games

are we talking the michael freeman book a few years back? if so - about 99.99% accurate - despite what (mis)management at espn might try and place whatever spin on it they might want. freeman did his homework and got all of the juicy stuff. my guess (key word here - not 100% sure) is that keith olbermann sang like a bird for him and provided him a lot of the info. that story about the giants/padres game that started 30 minutes earlier than the bookie knew is 100% true - i heard it from way too many people there to doubt it. the sexual harassment case the book talked about I KNOW is 100% true - because i can tell you the real names of the 3 involved (won't - but i could) and know it happened. here's something the book won't tell you - one other person in that incident was Mike Tirico. he got suspended for about 30 days because of it. if you read in the book about a guy named "Mike Bogad (Bogey - as we called him) and his sexual harrassmnt problems - once again - 100% true - and i should know for he was my immediate boss and i also did some work on the side for his wife. the story about Julie Paradis and the fact she wouldn't give someone time off for an important family function - true. my sister graduated from SDSU memorial day weekend, 1991. i BEGGED julie to give me time off to go see it. she wouldn't. i told her i could work the early shift friday - allowing me to catch the last flight out that day to LAX, go to graduation saturday, catch a red-eye back to bristol saturday night and be back to work on sunday - meaning i would only need 1 day off. she refused to do so. i do regret i didn't go to Bogey and ask for help - but knowing what kind of person he was like - i know he never would have gone to bat for me - hell - he never went to bat for me when it came time for them to decide my fate.

as for al jaffe - that guy is a real character. i first spoke to him in july, 1990. i sent him some tapes of my work then a few months later - more tapes. i called this guy every few weeks (on the 800-number, at least). finally he told me he wouldn't or couldn't hire me without an interview. so i arranged one for a few weeks later, the 1st monday in november. i flew out on a redeye on a saturday night (after all i had to pay for EVERYTHING on my own expense - the flight, rental car, lodging, food, etc. - with NO guarantee i would even get hired - since espn knows how many people want to work there - P.A.'s have to foot their own cost for interviews) getting to hartford sunday morning around 10A. my interview was the next day, Monday @ 10:30A. i stayed at a HoJo about 1 mile from ESPN so i wouldn't be late or run into traffic. when i got to see al - he fired away with a ton of questions. he asked me what free agents i would be interested in signing that off-season if i was a baseball GM (i KNOW i said "bob welch" but other than that - no idea the other ones). he asked me a few questions about some college basketball teams. he also asked me what story i would lead off the 6:30P SC with. i told him i would lead off with the NFL coach who was going to get fired that day (i forget who it was - i want to say cleveland's - but not sure). take in mind it was 10:30A and that coach hadn't gotten fired yet - but word was he would so i took a shot he would get canned. i;m not sure if it was luck, or not, but about 2 hours after our interview, the coach i said would get fired - DID! i think this really helped me get the job there a few months later. incidentally - i have no idea if espn led off SC that night with that story - for by the time SC was on - i was on a US Air flight to pittsburgh and then on my way to LAX (i was in CT for maybe 30 hours for the whole thing).

whatever jaffe saw in stuart scott who knows - but he saw enough in me to hire me. as we are all seeing now - Al Jaffe might be the MOST powerful person at ESPN. just about EVERYONE who wants a job at espn has to go thru Jaffe - and if he likes you - you are IN - and if he doesn't - say goodbye to your chances of ever working at the worldwide leader in sports.

winky: I remember paying all of my own expenses too! Actually that's not entirely true. Donna L. called me the day before and said there'd be a car waiting to pick me up at the airport! The round-trip probably saved me $100 in cab fare!!
