Isn't Chivas really the cheap stuff? I can't believe that people pay to drink that!

Have you ever heard of the "Chivas Regal Effect"? It a marketing concept that basically says that higher pricing, regardless of your quality of product, can actually increase sales. When Chivas first started out they had production processes that let them produce it very cheaply and want to pass on the savings. Problem was that no one was used to buying a low-price bottle of whiskey. Everyone was used to paying high amounts per bottle. So, Chivas did nothing but change its price, made it higher, and sales went through the roof.
chivas has a royal salute i believe its called...excellent............i know scotch and wine...........macallans is the best scotch on earth.........JW blue has no shot versus macallans

Is it $500 a bottle? Wow, that's high. I'd still like to try it though. I've always wondered just how much better the way more expensive bottles taste.

For example, is Cristal (sp?) really that much better than regular champagne?

No...I was just saying if I could bet $500 on game then I should be able to justify buying the bottle...its $199.99 at the store I go too.

I'm sure there are plenty examples of people who think that the more they pay for a drink the better is has to be.

A great example would be wine. Just because a bottle of wine sells for $80 doesn't mean it's any better than a $20 bottle. There are obviously exceptions though.

I prefer the Black over the Blue. I taste to much of the barrel in the Blue, it has a strong woods taste. But obviously that's just me.

Oban is my favourite scotch but for the money, about $32 a bottle, you can't beat Glenrothes single malt.

"Say you've got a big job interview. Throw back a couple of shots of Hennigans and you'll be as loose as a goose and ready to roll in no time! And because it's odorless, why it'll be our little secret!"

Not a scotch man myself, but my friends that drink it swear by Macallans and Lagavulin, not sure which ones though.

There is also JW Gold (~$50/bottle) and Green (~35/bottle). The green is vatted while the Red, Black, Gold and Blue are malted.

Ok, first off Chivas and Walker are both BLENDS....if you want to drink scotch, drink single malts....and the one guy who posted the Irish Whiskey bwahaha, that ain't scotch. Scotch can only be called 'scotch' if it's made in Scotland....Irish Whiskey sure isn't...

If you really are interested in scotches stick with the single malts. you'll find out fairly quickly what type you like most. most people start out with a Highland malt, they are lighter. There are 5 different regions all producing different tastes, highland, lowland, speyside, Islay and Glenlivet....
Your walker Blue and Chivas reserve etc are all decent blends, but they are still blends of aged single malts...no distinction.

My advice is to check out a local pub that has a wide variety of scotches and tastings. and ask the bartender for a tour, if you will, of the labels.

My personal favorite for not-so special occassions is a 17 year old Bowmore. It's an Islay...very spicy. You can grab a bottle for about 50-60 bucks....well worth it.

But stay away from your blends if you truly want to 'taste' your scotch.

I guess that's why they call Johnny Walker a scotch whiskey, right?

scotch and scotch whiskey are synonymous...Johnny Walker is a blend of single malt scotches from different distilleries. That's what defines it as a blend.
