If you do any type of gaming you cant beat an alienware. They are by far the most outstanding production computers. For a reasonalbe everyday computer I reccomend a HP (I have had several and no problems) or a Sony.

My opinion is that brand is well overrated...

Go to www.pricewatch.com and look up their PC systems then see what you can find. Usually I look at the best deals then I use that as a guide of which site to use.

The site links to the online sites that sell the machines.

PCUSA is the one I have had the most success with.

Also I have found that processor brand is somewhat overrated as well...

Duron I think is the cheapest and I have used a few of them without ever having any trouble.

The buzz i think is that the Athlon is best for gaming - after that there isnt much difference that I can see

Dell costs a little more than the others but it's head and shoulders above the rest.

if your thing is customer service dont get me wrong take the dell or any other OEM machine

however - the limitations are great on these machines. They load it up with BS software that noone ever uses so the first thing you have to do is reformat the machine if you are like me and cant stand all that crap running in the background. Reformatting the machines has become increasingly difficult because they bypass the generic bios access screens to show their hideous graphic for an exhorbitant amount of time every time you boot up. To upgrade anything is like reinventing the wheel - and god forbid if you get a good deal on a component that is supposedly compatible then try to install it yourself. They spend countless hours trying to find ways that make it difficult for you to upgrade by any way other than through them.

The machines themselves arent any better quality than the generic machines and their contracts they get with companies to make their parts are sometimes so limited that you could buy a cd drive or modem from them that you want support on within a couple of years and the company wont be around anymore.

Their deals are good and if your credit stinks and you MUST have a machine they'll give credit to anyone but in my experience I'll never buy another one of those again.

Does Dell manufacture any systems with the AMD Athlon™ processor?

Discussion

At the date of publication (August 28, 2001), all Dell systems ship with Intel® processors. At this time, Dell does not manufacture any systems with AMD Athlon processors.

Dell employs a complex and exhaustive review process to reach a final selection as to which components will be included in new systems. Factors that enter into the decision to use a particular component include, but are not limited to the following: relative consumer demand, compatibility with other technologies (legacy, present and future), price/performance ratio, and ease of use and reliability.

All decisions and selections are reconsidered several times a year.

Dell is committed to remaining the market leader by offering the products and services that most customers prefer.

If you are considering upgrading your processor, you may want to refer to the following Dell™ Web site:

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/segmenter.asp

If you search for components by Service Tag, you will get a list of parts known to be compatible with your particular system model.

They love the markup on the pentiums - and they probably cut an awesome deal with intel to get them at a sweeter rate than AMD would give them.

These slimebags are all about markup.

Fish, EMACHINES are BY FAR the WORST computer you could ever hope to stumble upon.

I know atleast 8 people all with the same MAJOR problem: Emachines are notorious for shutting off all by themselves, they also boot up without notice... The fans are complete crap and cause them to over heat constantly, hense shutting down...

If that's not enough, their tech support is THE worst....

I'm reeally surpirsed no one esle had a horror story about Emachines..

PS, for $1000-1200 you could build an animal of a PC, including monitor.

Thanks No1 for that info on Emachines. I played with the idea of buying one the other day.

Also--I saw a guy at the ractrack with a laptop Dell last week and liked what I saw. He wasn't too much forthcoming with information about it, but it seemed to be working well.
Also--I'm sorry to hear about Compaq buying out HP. (That move is probably good for them. HP -I thought had a good reputation whereas Compaq didn't sound too good.).
I'm leaning to a Dell now!

The other thing about buying a Dell is that every single thing is treaed as an option and by the time you are done putting together what you want it costs an arm and a leg.

Mr NJ, maybe I worded that wrong, what I meant to say was that a Dell was a good choice for someone just looking for an easy no brainer type of way out...

If he was enclined, I would highly recomemnd (and have done before) that he gets a local computer guy to build him a PC and put in the componants of his choice.. This would take time and know-how on his part, of which I don't think he's willing to do..
