Does anybody agree with me that the Sgt. pepper album was way overrated? "A Day in the Life" was classic, but much of it is not memorable. When was the last time you really got into "Fixing a Hole" or George Harrison's really bizarre tune. I bet most (myself included) don't even know the name of Harrison's song on that album. Perhaps the album broke new ground, but it hasn't aged well and it really is mediorce at best. As for the Beatles...you have to agree "Revolver" is much better. Half the songs are classics, (not commercial hits, but excellent songs nonetheless.) Lennon even said that of all of Mccartney's songs, his two favorties were off Revolver.....(Here, There, and Everywhere and "For No One").

And regarding the White Album, way too much garbage on that album. George Martin said it should have been a really great single disc, but they really forced a double album when the material just wasn't there. Some excellent tunes, but can anybody really say they enjoy listening to Bungalow Bill when you're not stoned?

Simp, I understand what you are saying about Sgt Pepper, but considering when it came out,was definately ground breaking. Musically was way ahead of it's time. Most of it still holds up today.

Guns N Roses Appetite for Destruction followed by Lies and the Use Your Illusion albums all sold more than 10 Million...
I agree, and would add that Lies was highly underrated.

Don't know about the best but my personal favs are:

90's Nirvana - Nevermind
AIC- Dirt
Tupac's Double Disc Greatest Hits

80's
Beastie Boys- Paul's Boutique
N.W.A. Straight outta Compton
Metallica - And Justice for All

70's Don't have any favs as I'm not a huge Zepplin or Floyd fan.

60's Hendrix-- Electric Ladyland
The Doors -- Strange Days

Simpleton, I agree with you completely on the two B's albums. Granted I'm an 80's guy, but respect the B's greatly, but neither of those releases can be in contention, two maybe three "great" songs each, doesn't cut it.

I have one contribution....AC/DC Back in Black is pretty tough to beat. There just isn't another album where every single song kicks ass like this one.

I forgot about Alice In Chains for a minute. Definitely not the best by any means, but another great band who kinda flew under the radar.

Tough call here. Most albums have a clunker or two on them. I like many of the choices. I can't really call it.

I'd like to get something from Rolling Stones in there somewhere. Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Gold and Platinum" would be a possible for 70's, but I'm not sure I can say best of decade.

There are just so many to choose from, but I won't pick greatest hits type things. Some bands I really enjoyed like the Kinks, Talking Heads, Doors, Pink Floyd,Who, Eagles, Joe Walsh, Tull, and so many more, they don't have it all on one disc, although Hotel California is a candidate for Eagle's best. Then there are the bands that didn't last. It all depends on what you like too. GNR rocked the 80's, but Rose was a jerk.

Even thinking of the 60's being almost 5 decades ago is depressing ! I feel so old.

Now I want to get out my reel-to reel tapes and crank the Hi-Fi.

Since i started thinking of this and started the thread...let me go first

60's - 1968 Beatles 'White album'

70's - 1975 Led Zeppelin 'Physical Grafitti'

80's - Tie 1987 Guns N Roses 'Appetite for Destruction' and 1987 U2 'Joshua Tree'

90's - Tie 1992 Nirvana 'Nevermind' and 1993 Pearl Jam 'Vs'

00's - jury still out...I like Staind 'Break the Cycle' myself..

Lets see you lists!
i am amending my vote for the 70's as i just got blown away freshly by a listen to an absolute Greatest Hits album in the form of a regular album....

1971's ROLLING STONES 'Stickey Fingers', not one bad song on it...classic and timeless from start to finish. Wild Horses has to be about the best single song ever recorded.

Also figured out the definitive best album of the 2000's...its AUDIOSLAVE 'Audioslave', another one with hit after hit...Chris Cornell has the best pipes in the biz.

Sticky Fingers is a great choice ! Read lyrics of " Brown Sugar" it says a lot. Forty licks is good, but it's greatest hits stuff. Stones are an important part of Rock history.
