I have a good Sandy Koufax story I want to share. In the late 80's, I worked just around the corner from the Del Mar Race and Sports book in North Las Vegas. It was owned by one of the sharpest bookies I ever met. His name was Bill Dark. Bill was not only sharp but a walking gambling encyclopedia and one of the nicest people you would ever want to meet. He is widely considered as the innovator of totals betting as we know it today.
The Dodger game was usually the last to go at 7:30 pm so someone would make a fast food run and Bill would come out of his office as soon as the game started and we would all sit around and watch the Dodger game and talk baseball. Well, we would really all just listen to Bill. When he was booking in the 60's he told us he used to put up 1 team totals. When Koufax pitched, he used to make the other side usually 1 1/2 and give his customers a plus on the over. They would all come in on the over and Koufax would pitch a shutout or hold them to 1 run. Out of all the years Bill Dark was a bookmaker, he told us that prop with Koufax was his biggest money maker he ever booked.
Bill Dark passed away a few years ago. Some of my favorite times in this city were watching ball games with Bill, his brother Al and some of the other Del Mar regulars. The place was a real grind joint but I loved it. It was a true bookie joint run by one of the sharpest baseball guys and bookmakers ever, Bill Dark.
