CARSON: Recovering Tocqueville’s vision of American exceptionalism

By returning to Christian roots, the nation can achieve greatness once again

In 1831, Alexis de Tocqueville, the famous French historian, came to America to study our nation. Europeans and others were fascinated by the success of the fledgling nation, then barely 50 years old and already competing on the world stage.
Such a thing had never before occurred, and Tocqueville was determined to discover the secret. He was duly impressed by our governmental structure, including the separation of powers, but he was in awe of the public educational system, which rendered its recipients completely literate by the completion of second grade. This depth of education was generally only found among the aristocracy in Europe.
Let’s put aside the diversionary arguments about lack of educational access for all, which was a huge mistake, and concentrate on the tremendous advantage afforded our predecessors by education. Early settlers not only mastered reading, writing and arithmetic, but shared practical skills, all of which enabled them to traverse and tame a rugged and frequently hostile terrain from sea to shining sea.
As isolated communities sprang up throughout the nation, they were able to thrive through innovation, industry and compassion. The “can-do” attitude involved hard labor, but also included a sense of responsibility for those, who through injury or other hardships, could no longer care for themselves. The spirit of caring, although diminished, remains an important part of who we are today.
Tocqueville was impressed by the fiery sermons that emphasized the word of God and not the social mores of the day. He concluded his American analysis by saying, “America is great, because America is good. If America ever ceases to be good, she will cease to be great.” America was different because we openly acknowledged the role of God in our lives.
Some will say, “Carson is a religious fanatic because he believes in God and the Bible.” Interestingly, the very same people are quick to invoke the name of God and recommend prayer at times of national and personal tragedy. Hypocrisy is their frequent companion.
Some will say America can never make claims of “goodness” owing it her history of slavery. Although it was by far the worst atrocity in our history, we paid a horrendous price in lives lost or destroyed in a Civil War that all but incapacitated a young nation. The guilt, shame and humility that resulted from this dark American episode will teach us and stigmatize us well into the future. Learning from mistakes is a sign of wisdom and goodness.
What is disturbing in the pursuit of goodness is the turning of a blind eye toward corruption, much like the Romans did before the fall of their empire. Episodes such as the Internal Revenue Service scandal should alarm all Americans, regardless of political affiliation. The fact that one party has characterized it as a “phony scandal” tells you a great deal about the loss of honesty in our society.
The fact that one party is willing to use its majority status to cram a health care bill down the throats of the minority party and the American people, and then refuses to acknowledge the obvious illegitimacy of a bill largely passed on the basis of false information provides a barometer on the lack of importance placed on virtue in our society today. How can such a society in any way claim to be good?
How can a society that kills millions of innocent unborn babies and then labels anyone opposing the practice as “anti-woman” claim even a modicum of goodness? How can a nation that uses its news media to subtly trash traditional families, promote a drug-filled lifestyle, and ridicule faith in God claim the mantle of righteousness?
I could go on pointing out how far we have strayed from our Judeo-Christian roots. For some, such a departure cannot come soon or dramatically enough. However, I believe the majority of Americans understand that we are different from everyone else, and that difference had a great deal to do with our rapid rise to the pinnacle of world power and wealth.
As we depart from our former values of decency, honesty, compassion and fairness, our status as a blessed nation will also be diminished.
Our decline is not necessary if we can learn from the mistakes of others and reclaim the values upon which our nation was built. I am not advocating for a national religion, but I do think we should seriously consider the words of John Adams, who said, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for the government of any other.”
America can be great, but it requires real courage and conviction to resist the urge to be “cool.” None of this means we should impose Judeo-Christian values on those who wish to adopt a different kind of lifestyle, but it does mean that we should not allow an alternative lifestyle to be imposed upon us.
Fairness is a two-way street, and so is tolerance. If the majority refuses to fight for its rights while a vocal minority uses a compliant media to try to fundamentally change America, we will have only ourselves to blame.

Carson was a professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery, and pediatrics, and he was the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. At age 33, he became the youngest major division director in Johns Hopkins history, as director of pediatric neurosurgery. He was also a co-director of the Johns Hopkins Craniofacial Center.

According to Johns Hopkins Hospital literature, "Dr. Carson focuses on traumatic brain injuries, brain and spinal cord tumors, achondroplasia, neurological and congenital disorders, craniosynostosis, epilepsy, and trigeminal neuralgia. He is also interested in maximizing the intellectual potential of every child."

Carson believes his hand-eye coordination and three-dimensional reasoning skills made him a gifted surgeon. After medical school, he became a neurosurgery resident at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Starting off as an adult neurosurgeon, Carson became more interested in pediatrics. He believed that with children, "what you see is what you get, ... when they're in pain they clearly show it with a frown on their face or when they are happy they show it by smiling brightly."

In 1987, Carson successfully separated conjoined twins, the Binder twins, who had been joined at the back of the head, making them craniopagus twins. The 70-member surgical team, led by Carson, worked for 22 hours. At the end, the twins were successfully separated and can now survive independently.

I guess some people accomplish more with single IQ’s than others.

I’ll bet he would have made one hell of a community organizer.

Oh and by the way. :bigfinger:madasshol

I am a fiscal conservative. I totally agree with this statement made by Ben Carson:

"Fiscal responsibility, a fair tax system, free market health care, focusing on education and accepting solutions instead of excuses. It’s these principles that will drive us to become a better nation. Not social justice, focusing on victimization or redistribution of wealth."

It56 does not get It, how ironic. I am absolutely positive he said that without a monitor to help him. LOL IT56 Einstein does not make things relative as far as politics goes. That one post put you into the kool aid section. Obama is half black, Carson is black 100%. Carson grew up in the ghetto, Obama went to school in Indonesia and Hawaii. Smart, don't even go there. Alinsky on dude, your fly is down. gotcha. What a dumbass.

actually, i made a mistake and put carson instead of your hero bundy, the retard rancher who bilked taxpayers out of money and was every republican's wet dream. that mistake was mine. the fact that i referred to remarks about race made and every republican distancing themselves from their former hero should have told you i meant bundy. i did screw up with the name, but a retard could have realized i was talking about bundy. still no mention of the lying racist thief who was just you're hero days ago.

free market healthcare has been very successful and not corrupted. great point. it is the reason medicaid and medicare are out of control. economics isn't your strong point. since when has a conservative focused on education????? they cut it or come up with great programs like "no child left behind". that was a great program too. keep flapping your yap. fiscal conservative = mentally retarded.

Really? You say Carson in your post, in a thread about Benjamin Carson yet even a retard would know you are talking about Bundy? Yeah, Bundy is a scum bag. Not earthshaking news.

yes, many of the threads were talking about the bundy issue. they supported him as did fox news and republicans in congress. when i mentioned all of that, along with race comments and people backpedaling, anybody could have connected those dots because none of that fits carson. it's funny how you think bundy is a scumbag now, but before he went right wing crazy the was the right's wet dream.

You are continuing to make a fool out of yourself. No where have I ever touted Bundy as a hero, no where. He and others should have been grandfathered in to the system decades ago. You are now throwing darts out of desperation. I condemn the federal government for their methods and dispute that they have the constitutional right to own land. Bundy is not a retard, you might be, but he is simply standing up for what he believes. Good for him. Apparently many others stood up for him. You would probably let them take your house without a fight. Get real dude. Carson is a leader. He stood up to Obama face to face and laid it out there. He is exactly what we need. As far as Bundy goes he does not have to answer to me. He and his family have worked that land for over a century. There were plenty of ways the feds could have handled it but under this administration there are no constraints when it comes to individual rights. Bundy paid the state of Nevada. Only a retard could confuse Bundy and Carson but then again you have to consider the source. Get your shit together dude.

You can think Cliven Bundy is a scum bag, but nobody should lose sight of the big picture and who real enemy is. Were the owners of Gibson Guitars "scum bags" as well for breaking some corrupt esoteric law? Sometimes "the law" is... wrong. And in the case if this regime, sometimes our individual imperfections need to put aside for the task at hand - "the enemy of my enemy is my friend"

This is exactly what Democrats want - divide and conquer, until there's nobody left to oppose their radical destructive agenda. There is not a single individual in America who the left wouldn't smear to advance their ideology. Do not be fooled by their cries of 'racism', we've all seen the duplicitous left's true colors first hand with Clarence Thomas, Herman Cain, Allen West and others.

Bottom line: The Bundys stood up to a tyrant, and that's more than good enough for me. Period.

he believes in knowingly breaking the law everyone else follows. good for him. he was the one not willing to talk about it. another intelligent post by russ. i didn;t confuse 2 people, i just wrote the wrong name by mistake, something i'm sure you have never done. to portray the gov't as the bad guys and trying to take his house shows how ignorant you are.
