Pregame notes: Dan Haren hasn't won since May 2. He gave up five runs, nine hits and four home runs in seven innings Saturday against Oakland. In three career starts against the Braves, Haren is 2-1 with a 6.88 ERA. In 30 at-bats, Atlanta OF Garret Anderson has hit .367 against Haren.
In his first season in Atlanta, Derek Lowe has been strong. He's 4-1 with a 3.74 ERA in five May starts. He pitched into the seventh inning in four of those contests. In 17 career starts against Arizona, Lowe is 6-7 with a 3.66 ERA. The Diamondbacks have hit 10 home runs off Lowe, more than any other NL club. SS Stephen Drew is 14 for 27 (.519) against Lowe.
Braves at the plate: The Braves seldom win with power. They entered Wednesday with just 33 home runs, 13th in the National League. Nor do they win often with speed. They had stolen just 10 bases, worst in the NL. (The major-league average is 31.) INF Omar Infante is hitting .349, but he is out because of a hand injury. 3B Chipper Jones and C Brian McCann also have battled injuries, but both are hitting over. 300.
Braves on the mound: Atlanta starters entered Wednesday with a 3.93 ERA but have yet to throw a complete game. The Diamondbacks will see the Braves' best in Lowe, Jair Jurrjens and Javier Vazquez. The bullpen, with a 4.53 ERA, is shaky. Closer Mike Gonzalez had blown three saves.
Braves overall: With their injuries, the Braves have done well to stay over .500 and in contention in the NL East. They're going to need more offense, however, to challenge the Phillies and Mets.
