Yes Blue I totally think the black MARGINAL players are not making the rosters as often as the whites , strictly because of skin color!

THIS IS NOT MEANT TO BE A RACIAL THREAD! Its reality and an observation, and thats all...

J-MAN MY FRIEND..FOR YOU TO MAKE THAT STATEMENT IS PURE STUPIDITY.....For the black race to have 70%in football, and 80% hoops... and to be 9% of the race in this usa is really good if you ask me..So tired of the poor black guy yelling discrimination without knowing the facts..DO YOU REALLY REALLY REALLY THINK THERE IS DISCRIMINATION IN SPORTS TODAY??GUESS NIKE FEELS THE SAME WAY!

I think that the race card is seriously overplayed in sports.

Lets face it-if you can play, no one cares if you are green & have a purple dick.

Oldfriend...I even rephrased the title...I`m not crying for the black man at all....Its a fact that baseball has a declining number of black ballplayers...

You won`t see three blacks sitting on the bench as the 23/24/25 men on the team...I think there`s more to it than just slighting the black player...I think it also has to do with inner-city blacks not playing the old pastime...

Trust me on this , and this could be taken as racist I don`t like the fact NO whites can play runningback anymore, no recievers etc. Thats too bad , but again the fact is the white man doesn`t have the quickness for those positions...I wish it was different...Just for balance ...

journey, as i understand your first couple of posts in this thread...the number of blacks playing on major league rosters has declined from the 70's and 80's. this is due to "racism as usual".

so, from the 1890's to the 1940's blacks were kept out of baseball by white america. then, due to the courage of a few, jackie robinson breaks the color barrier and puts up with a lot of bullsh*t that no one should have to go through just to prove that blacks can play. over the next 20-30 years, professional sports is fully integrated...pretty much the best players make it regardless of skin color or anything else.

now, you are saying that in the last 20 years, racism has crept back in to baseball? i gotta tell ya, that's a bunch of crap. if anything, this country is so hyper-sensitive to the race issue, that the reverse is true. people would rather be labelled just about anything but a racist. everytime a coach or manager gets hired, the owner has to give 10 reasons why he wants to hire a white guy for the job...if he hires a black guy, he has to give no reasons...everyone says "well its about time".

i'm not saying racism doesn't exist in america because i know it does. it just doesn't exist in this situation. maybe there are fewer black players but racism is not why.

i'm not even sure your arguement that all the reserves are white even holds water. i live in chicago and follow the cubs. the cubs have lenny harris, tom goodwin and troy oleary who come off the bench. these are 3 black guys who can't start anymore but, major league baseball didn't tell them "thanks for the production in your prime but, now that you're washed up - hit the bricks and make room for my white nephew who's playing in triple a".

just don't buy it journey.

I said it was a combination Blue, If I have to I will break this down even further , I will go back into the 70`s and 80`s and give examples...but think back to teams at that time...Its not that hard to figure out...I`ve seen reports on this very subject...

Its a combination of those two factors...The foriegn born players are making up more and more of team rosters as well....

Whether you want to admit it or believe it or not ,there is a DECLINING NUMBER OF AMERICAN BORN BLACK BASEBALL PLAYERS...

black baseball players do not make up 50% of the major leagues.... there are more hispanic players than black baseball players.

i've noticed that there have been a declining number of black baseball players..but I think it is correlated with the declining of the black kid playing baseball.

In addition, the # of BOTH black and white players have declined since the latino explosion in the 90's.

There are no more Tony Gwynns and Rod Carews. Only Power and speed black players. Not many contact hitters which baseball ultimately likes in the end.

journey, you say its a "combination"? i would agree that there is more than one factor but, if racism is part of your "combination", i disagree.

i agree with the others in this thread that the asian and hispanic influence has changed the percentages of both "whites" and "blacks" in the game. it also makes sense that the black kids in the 80's-90's played more basketball than baseball...which would explain the declining trend today. but i'm sorry, i just don't buy racism as one of the reasons.

i'm sure there is at some level. my point is that these guys want to win & make money more than anything. if you (as an owner or gm) are a racist but you believe that having lenny harris on your bench gives your team a better chance to win, you sign him. you don't say, "man, i know lenny harris is better than kevin orie but i really hate black people so, i'll sign kevin orie".

come on.

marge shott was a racist. she even called barry larkin and eric davis her "million dollar niggers". i terrible thing to say, no question. but, she signed larkin and davis...why? because she wanted to win.
