journey, as i understand your first couple of posts in this thread...the number of blacks playing on major league rosters has declined from the 70's and 80's. this is due to "racism as usual".
so, from the 1890's to the 1940's blacks were kept out of baseball by white america. then, due to the courage of a few, jackie robinson breaks the color barrier and puts up with a lot of bullsh*t that no one should have to go through just to prove that blacks can play. over the next 20-30 years, professional sports is fully integrated...pretty much the best players make it regardless of skin color or anything else.
now, you are saying that in the last 20 years, racism has crept back in to baseball? i gotta tell ya, that's a bunch of crap. if anything, this country is so hyper-sensitive to the race issue, that the reverse is true. people would rather be labelled just about anything but a racist. everytime a coach or manager gets hired, the owner has to give 10 reasons why he wants to hire a white guy for the job...if he hires a black guy, he has to give no reasons...everyone says "well its about time".
i'm not saying racism doesn't exist in america because i know it does. it just doesn't exist in this situation. maybe there are fewer black players but racism is not why.
i'm not even sure your arguement that all the reserves are white even holds water. i live in chicago and follow the cubs. the cubs have lenny harris, tom goodwin and troy oleary who come off the bench. these are 3 black guys who can't start anymore but, major league baseball didn't tell them "thanks for the production in your prime but, now that you're washed up - hit the bricks and make room for my white nephew who's playing in triple a".
just don't buy it journey.
