Keep an eye on the transfer portal. It's about to get busy.

Too many of these guys want to play.....

It's hard to keep up with the ever changing transfer rules.. But unless you are a grad transfer or a 5th year senior, don't you have to sit out a year if you transfer? If so, that would obviously defeat the purpose.

There are some exceptions now, like when the NCAA changed the APR rules and applied them retroactively to UConn basketball for failing APR scores. After punishing them with the lost of scholarships, they then went back and banned them from post season play for a year. A good old fashioned double jeopardy. But I digress

They also ruled that some players who transferred because of the ban didn't have to sit a year. So that might suggest that players who transfer because the school cancelled their season shouldn't have to sit a year.

[h=2]Discontinued/Non-sponsored Sport Exception[/h]A student-athlete may transfer and play immediately if his or her previous school meets one of the following criteria:

  • The institution has dropped or has publicly announced it will drop the student-athlete’s sport;
  • The institution has reclassified or has announced it will reclassify from Division I or II to Division III and the student-athlete does not play after the school moves to Division III; or
  • The school never sponsored the student-athlete’s sport while he or she attended the school, and the student-athlete never previously attended any institution that sponsored the sport.

Alex Oriakhi will spend his senior season with a team that has a chance to play in the NCAA tournament.
The 6-foot-9, 240-pound Oriakhi will transfer from Connecticut, his father, Alex Sr., told the Hearst Connecticut Media Group.
"Alex will transfer because of the NCAA tournament next year," his father told the newspaper group.
UConn is appealing an NCAA decision that will prevent it from playing in the 2013 NCAA tournament because of a subpar academic progress rating.
Players transferring between Division I schools normally must sit out a season, but if UConn remains banned, Oriakhi will not be forced to sit out a year, the newspaper group reported. The NCAA grants waivers for athletes to transfer if their previous school is ineligible for the postseason for the length of the players' eligibility.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

If they're consistent, then it appears a player with one year of eligibility remaining should be allowed to transfer, but when is the NCAA consistent?

For UConn, the school was punished twice for self-reporting a failing APR score. For UNC, they admitted to academic fraud involving student athletes but the NCAA did nothing because they self reported passing APR scores. Gotta love bureaucracy.

i expect this will be how the NCAA handles the mass transfer requests... for CFB if you are not draft eligible in 2021 (have more than 2 years of eligibility remaining) you cannot leave your school without sitting this year but if you need just 1 more year to be draft eligible (justin fields, shaun wade, etc) then you can leave without penalty

Interesting.

All of this has shed light on just how much the NCAA was a house of cards. Zero leadership. Corruption. Poor business models at the University level. Etc. I believe these possible mass transfers will help contribute to the downfall and complete restructure and reboot of college athletics.

They might start and play a few games, then collapse.
IMO they will all cave and end their fall seasons.

If some play they would be blasted by media and fans for taking a huge risk.As we have seen it don't take much to catch this covid-19.Also what kind of season would it be with less than half the conferences playing and half not.The good matchups we are used to seeing will just not be there, and you just know problems will arise during play if they have it.Really, most of the top conferences will not be playing, and a couple might be,but the schools and students have to look ahead about their futures, and not worry about playing a couple games and possibility hurting their NFL dreams,i just can't believe its a debate weather to play or not,..and with no fans there, its just not going to be fun
