to calculate cell C you do the following:

=(A-D)/A

Enjoyable thread. Am grateful to Wolfie_cr and niltes for the solutions and especially niltes for the line by line equation solution. I don't think I could have solved the problem as stated (no problem with initial post, more my own math shortcomings) and am grateful for a peek at the answer book.
