Ok, fine...

a) Burke didn't bring in the top players. Guys like Bertuzzi and Naslund were brought in by other GMs. In fact, a lot of the credit goes to Mike Keenan for rebuilding the organization.

b) Burke was constantly trading away mid round picks for rental players who proved to be worthless. In 6 years of drafting, who did Brian Burke produce, other than the Sedin twins? He was given the twins due to the team's weak perfomance and his desire to overpay for another top 4 pick (McCabe & top 15 pick).

c) When prompted to deal the franchise player, and arguably the most exciting player in the league at the time, Burke dealt Bure and Hedican for what amounted to Ed Jovanovski. Jovo turned out to be a solid dman, but there should have been more available for a guy of Bure's calibre. Oh yah, the Canucks also got a 1st round pick in the deal... I think he played one or two games on the 4th line and was never heard from again! (Nathan Smith)

d) Burke was stubborn beyond belief. This is why he could never make a good trade. He was unwilling to trade one of his bust players, with the hope that the players would turn it around and prove him a genius. This is why the Canucks lost RJ Umberger over a few thousand dollars.

e) Burke's inability to find a starting goalie. First he gets rid of Arthurs Irbe, who had a good season on a bad team. He decided to go with Kevin Weekes (who he was very high on) and Garth Snow. And the final argument, Adrian Aucoin & 2nd round pick for Dan Cloutier. This was a gross overpayment at the time, as Cloutier had already been shuffled around to a couple organizations. Well, Aucoin moved on to be one of the top minute leaders in the NHL, while Cloutier won the Canucks a cup... i mean blew every playoff series he was a part of.

Burke did well for Vancouver... give me a break. It took Nonnis only a few months to pull off a deal that was better than all of Burke's moves combined.

haha, not one good thing to say about Burke in all that? I knew it was personal.

Keenan 'rebuild the organization'?? huh??

you seem smitten with Dave Nonis (spelt with one n, btw, not two....strange a Canuck fan would mess that up twice). Any idea why he keeps following Burke around? Why would he follow a Harvard graduate clown of a GM like Burke? Under Burke's wing in Vancouver, then to Anaheim and now in Toronto. I mean, as you said:

"It took Nonnis only a few months to pull off a deal that was better than all of Burke's moves combined"

then why aren't NHL teams a knockin' on Nonis' door?? and why is he following Burke around?

strange, eh?

Man if that's not ripping on him I'd sure hate to hear you when you DO! Golly.

Pronger was a no brainer? LOL.

Carlyles a good coach but you could make an argument that any decent coach could've taken that crew to a cup.

Dude?

Your not from Vancouver are you?

Oh yea.

:ohno:

My mistake, I thought a discussion was going on you just want people to agree with you. I'll move on.

I met brian burke in penticton (WHERE THIS PHOTO IS FROM) a few years back on the bus ride back from the river channel float. He was with his whole family....

I asked him if he brought the cup along with for the float and he chuckled and said no but had it in town with him. I then congratulated him on winning the cup and he brushed aside the compliment and said it was all the coaches and players comittment. He was really humble about it.

I can't really say I am happy how he left the canucks franchise, the cupboards were bare and only 1 PO series win in 7 years wasn't good enough with the talent we had.

by the way carlise was plucked from nucks farm team. I'll say one thing about Burkie he is loyal to his guys, nonis, bert, morrison. If he builds a winner in TO then he deserves some credit for being a good exec. but I think he is really an opportunist.

I again caught the tail end of the interview this morning on my way to work. I know the reason he left Anaheim and a lot of the people who are mad at him [ I believe probably mostly Vancouverites] feel he gave his word he wouldn't leave Anaheim and he did. But after winning a Cup in Anaheim and doing what he's done so far in Toronto...I often wondered why he didn't have much success in Vancouver. And then this morning I heard him say, kinda in hindsight, that the Vancouver owners[ Orca Bay?] didn't want to spend any money at the deadline to improve the club. He also mentioned that Cloutier was coming off injuries just before entering the playoff's either both...or for a couple years when he was their no.1 guys in net. Now...it really didn't sound like he was making excuses, just explaining and answering the questions of the interviewer. Kinda makes a little sence as he was given full reigns in Anaheim and got them a cup and at least feel he has the Leafs headed in the right direction.

Somebody correct me if I'm missing something.

another Vancouver fan here, I didn't mind Burke at first, the media loves him with his one-liners and because he is not afraid to voice his opinion. But fans quickly grow tired of him after a couple seasons and his stubborness does tend to get in the way sometimes. (Canucks losing Umberger as mentioned earlier) Personally I don't think he is a very good evaluator of talent, when he traded Bure in his prime in a 7 player deal with Florida he called Kevin Weekes the goalie of the future, and named and old and washed up Dave Gagner as the key to the deal. Outside of the deal to get the Sedins, the Canucks drafting record was horrendous under the Burke regime too. Good for him on getting a Stanley Cup in Anaheim, although I'm really not too sure how much of it was on him. He is a lot more bark then he is bite, people in Toronto will see this in a couple years and I'm sure many will grow tired of his act there as well.

One thing I'm starting to think though is part of the reason he moved to Toronto was so he could see his name in the paper every single day. Maybe he missed that. Why else would he come out barking publicly how he was going to try to trade up to get JT.

Hmmmmm. Maybe he would like him on his team for the next 15-20 years.

Sure, but isn't publicly hyping the kid going to stir up interest possibly raising the price. Maybe he has something up his sleeve. I personally see another Daigle on the horizon...

First off......Burke is a lawyer.
If ya still like him, he worked with Bettman.

He is a pompous ass! Always will be.
He has done nothing more or less than any other GM/CEO of a hockey franchise.
Raising attendance in Vancouver is like getting a boner for a teenager. Really easy, make the playoffs once or twice will do it. Considering in the NHL almost everybody makes it......no biggie.
When he talks I listen, because he has the "gift of the gab" and VERY good at it.
Being in Nuckland we got lots of it.
He'd have your wifes panties off in a minute!

Great fit in Toronto for him.......if he succeeds after almost 50 years of futility good for him. If not he will still love it.......talk talk talk
