anyone really familar with San Diego, possibly ppeter?

I found 2 places. A Hyatt on One Market Place, in downt town San Diego.

And the other is on 377 La Jolla Village Drive.

I only stay at Hyatt if they are offered. These 2 properties are Hyatt.

If anyone is from there, or can suggest one or the other that would help.

Thanks,

BB

The Coast Hotel in Long Beach is very nice. Stayed there 7/4 weekend and enjoyed it very much. It is right on the water but I'm not sure about a beach. Very beautiful and relaxing, though.

I think Southwest is running specials right now on flights into Long Beach. Fly in, rent a car and cruise.

I found a very nice Hyatt on Huntington Beach, that is near Catalina Island I see.

Anyone know how Huntington Beach compares to the rest of the suggestions?

THIS is my backyard - i live like 1 mile away from HB. first off - HB is NOWHERE near Catalina Island. to get to catalina you take boats from Long Beach or San Pedro. there is also a Hilton literally right next door (Waterfront Hilton) so check that out, too. ALL Hilton rooms face the ocean - which is across the street. not familiar with the Hyatt as much. i know when Penn State last played in the Rose Bowl they stayed at the Waterfront Hilton until they had to move to Pasadena.

if you stay in HB - you aren't far from newport beach, balboa island and so much more. the scenery" is very nice, too. if you don't mind doing some driving, you can take PCH up from HB and go to places like Marina del Rey and Manhattan/Redondo/Hermosa Beach.

if you fire me off an e-mail we can talk about this some more.

Orange County is a great area. i assume you are driving in, right? if flying, John Wayne is your ariport.

Winky has the best bet. Your Target area should be Newport Beach extending South to Dana Point.

The fashion island, balboa island area of Newport is great. Beautiful area going South. Even inland it is very pretty in that South Orange County area.

And jogging/strolling down Newport Beach at Sunset checking out the beach houses is a best bet, stopping at the low key bars for a few drinks. Ride the Ferry to Balboa Island.

if he is coming with wifey - check out South Coast Plaza - she will LOVE it. TWO nordstrom's - which women love - and the "scenery" there is outstanding.

you aren't that far from San Diego, too - about 90-ish miles.

as i said - fire me an e-mail if you want to further discuss this.

Which is best depends upon what's your flavor. Cannon Beach is very beutiful and has lots of shops etc. Lincoln City has a Casino right on the Ocean and you can go Deep Sea fishing for Salmon or botton fish close by or watch the whales while you dine at Whale Cove Inn. Lots of nice classy Restuarants near like Dory
Cove. They call it the 26 miracle miles heading south to Newport. Coos Bay is south almost to Cal. border and Rockaway is kinda like Cannon Beach.

since you decided on SD - solid choice. but try and fit a trip into Tijuana in. if you go, take the 5 South and you will run into the Mexican Border. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU DRIVE INTO MEXICO! if you do - odds are great your car insurance will be null and void - and traffic accidents there are FELONIES! you will have to deal with the police and they are every bit as corrupt as you can imagine - especially to someone they feel they can shake down for $$$$.

take freeway to literally the last exit before mexico - and park your car in one of the lots. it will cost you a handful of $$$. then walk across the border (bring your driver's license - and after 9/11 - see if you have to bring a psssport - you just might) and go to Revolucion Avenue and you can get stuff for a great price (after you bargain down the prices).

having said that - if you go to "TJ" make sure you do it during the day - and come sundown you are on the US sideof the border.

oh, yeah - DON'T drink the water.

also - stay out of their sportsbooks. most charge a $50-ish fee to get inside the doors. they then take that $50 and give yo a credit at their sportsbook - so you get it back. but as others have stated here before - if you win your bet - you get charged something like a 1-2% tax.

if you are in SD when the padres are in town - check out Petco - just DO NOT sit down the LF line - they are obstructed view seats (honest).

I was thinking of going out to Monterrey or Carmel? Which is better or are they both the same?

BTW, Destin, Fla is my new favorite place in Fla, if you ever go nearby there.

Where is your sense of adventure BB?

Go down to Nogales and cross the border. Then get on a bus (or drive your own car if you prefer) for about 4 or 5 hours and go to the town of Guaymas. While there spend some time in San Carlos and Bahia Kino. You said you wanted piece and quiet, this time of year you get plenty of it. San Diego this time of year is a tourist zoo. A nice one yes, but still a crazy zoo. Nothing in California south of Santa Barbara is what you would call secluded and quiet. Worse yet if you are from Phoenix you probably have a good shot of running into some of your neighbors as they once estimated almost 10% of the Maricopa county population was in San Diego county at any given time in August!

As for Tijuana, the reputation of that place as being dangerous is far worse than the reality. I have good friends that live there and spent plenty a trouble free weekend down there. Get insurance for your car, about $10/day, and then you don't worry about the hassles. It will cost you just as much to park your car along the border. Still though that and Ensenada this time of year are no better than San Diego. If you truly want to get away you have to go off the beaten path.
