IT's easy to fix. They position the Line Judge right on the line, they can take another ref on the opposite side of the field and position him 4yrd off the line opposite of the LJ. When he sees a OL pass him and it's a pass, throw the flag. Easy penalty to call. This comes from Bill Yoeman @ Houston and his Veer offense. They were lethal back int he 70's and 80's. The spread if the veer on steroids.Interesting point. Been reading a lot on the read option pass play that is almost impossible to defend. Look for a rule change in the next couple years regarding lineman down field. If you saw a screen shot of the play in the game, miss had a lineman 8 yards down field. The 1 yard cushion down field will change that play dramatically.....like it was put in place in the nfl. Funny they reviewed that play, and the ref had to see it. I know they can't call it at that point, but it could have made a difference.
Funny note...In HS here in Dallas I played against Kevin Murray (Father of A&M QB Kyler Murray) and we had fits against their offense and him running it. We were both veer teams however, he was far more proficient at QB running it than I was. We had a discussion about this very topic last spring with Kyler. We'd both like to go back in time and run the spread offenses today, knowing then what we know now about running offenses and passing. We did not have the benefit of 7on7 or QB tutors. Our kids today have it much better...
