I see so many people get jobs through connections. " Oh, my boy hooked me up with this consulting job". So and so's dad, friend, brother, girlfriend's brothers husband's, friends, fraternity brother blah blah blah". THAT, I don't like. I don't like seeing people get jobs through the political process ( but it will sadly always happen). People hire who they are comfortable with but it blows when you are on the other end of it.
I've also seen the other ugly side of it, Affirmative action. I don't work in HR but I went on a recruiting trip at a college campus " hey fun guy". I got to see the resumes and meet the applicants and it sickened me to hear HR talk afterwards. They'd like one guy better but " we have to keep in mind diversity so maybe we should go for so and so". That pisses me off to no end when we have the perfect candidate but we have to downgrade because they aren't the right race. Fuck that.
When I came out of college I once applied for a job too and it basically came down to this, are you going to stay here... like for some time. Why? Because "Ebony" was hired, worked here for 3 months and then quit. " She was a nice enough girl, but we don't want that to happen again". I was in a 1 on 1 with a lady, she seemed smart and polite enough but it seemed like she was still pained/angered by the process. Everybody in the office was white, and the result was obvious.
One thing that I think screws people up is that they are unrealistic about salary expectations. Nobody wants to be paid the "average" rate for the position, everybody is "above average" but that's statistically impossible. If you get in with a good company and prove your worth you'll do fine.
