in my big room, i have 4 tvs above my big screen. the 4 are 32s, 2 LGs, 1 samsung, 1 sony.. the samsung blows the others away, sony is my worst one in 780 stuff, but if stuff is 1080 then it looks better than the lgs in 1080, but the samsung blows all away in 780 and 1080

Matt, I would like to see some pictures of that big room of yours. Do you have 5 different lines of cable reception going to all of the tv's so you can watch say 5 games at once? Do you have surround sound set up with passovers going into each tv?

Then you didn't do enough investigating. If you want to overpay for a tv, get a Sony. There are many tv's much better than a Sony and you will pay less.

If you want the best BANG for your buck, buy a Samsung

I had the Sony and Samsung tv sets side by side when purchasing my set and Sony had a better picture. The Sony was about 75 dollars more.

I bought the kids 2 32 inch emersons at Wally Mart for $447 each they work great. I heard some bad stuff on Visio making a poping noise after a few months. It is the power supply and they can be purchased for $160 and very easy to install but not worht the hassle now a days buy the protection plan on these tvs. Most of this new stuff only last a few years.

Guys, I bought a Vizio 47" LCD Gallevia and YES, it is true, it does POP sometimes. The picture and sound are great but I paid $1600 for it last year and if I had to do it all again, I would go with SONY!!!!

not knocking sony at all but I think you are going to pay a little extra for the name.

That being said I wouldn't mind paying extra for an investment such as a tv as long as I knew it was worth it.

Personally I would go with a samsung I have had no problems with mine and I did quite a bit of shopping before my purchase, and trust me I am very picky when it come to my electronics.

The funny thing is tv's come and go like crazy....they hold no value and something new and better seems to come out every week.

Have had two Samsung 42 inch LCDs and to me the picture is the best by far. Not to bad on the price either. Get a Samsung.

Fishhead, if you want to buy a Vizio, try Costco, they've been selling 1080p 42" Vizios with 120 hertz for $899, and "32 of the same for like $450, 55" of the same for $1599. Buying from Costco, they throw in an additional 1 yr warranty on top of the manufacturer. American Express also has good 1 year extra warranty extensions w/purchase.

I bought a 61" Samsung 1080P CinemaPure Brightlight Bulb DLP for a mere 1K a few months ago, regularly $1600 to $1800.

Still pondering a 60" LCD 120 versus a 1080P Panasonic or Infocus/Dell projector with a 106" screen.

I love Samsung and Sony.

Samsung's are rated the best. Rail is correct too about finding a wholesaler on Craigslist. Not sure how the warranty would work buying from a wholesaler though.

From this thread, I'm staying clear of Vizio.

Again, it appears I will be going with a 42 inch Samsung or possibly Sony............with 1080p

Great info everyone, thanks for the responses.

Just FYI, I was going to go with a Samsung in the 650 series - but found one of these Sonys for $999 at BB. They've since raised the price back up, but if you do end up looking for a less expensive alternative, I'm enjoying the TV very much - have it hooked up to my htpc and 1080p MKV files, as well as OTA HiDef look great.

Here's a froogle.com link; looks like you can get it for under $1k at quite a few reputable dealers: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=KDL-40V4100&cid=8905233410037010724&sa=title#ps-sellers

I've bought a 42" Samsung and a 42" Panasonic for under $700. I prefer the Panasonic (plasma) to the Samsung (LCD).

Why 1080p? Are you going to be doing blu-ray? If not there's no need as ESPN/ABC/CBS/FOX all cast in 720p (practically every channel is 720p). And unless you're buying a gigantic TV (not a 42") you aren't going to notice a difference even in the blu-ray movies unless you're watching from 20 feet away.

I had the Sony and Samsung tv sets side by side when purchasing my set and Sony had a better picture. The Sony was about 75 dollars more.

Could be a million different reasons for the difference (different cable feeds, the settings could have been wrong, lighting, etc).

I'm glad you enjoy your Sony. I'm just saying there are better tv's out there, read ANY legit review site and you will find the same thing.
