Get something you know for a fact that you won't have to spend any money (big money!) for the next five years, just the regular check-ups!

If you are into SUV's, a 4Runner Ltd with everything is nice-and less than a Lexus.

(the gold L's are more expensive than the chrome T's)

dont buy NEW. You loose about $2000 of resale the instant you drive off the lot. There are good cars and SUV's that you can get used for $15,000.

Buying new makes sense for financing, you can get ~5-6% p.a. Financing a slightly used car you get 11-18% p.a., it's almost always more expensive monthly financing a 0-3 yr old car than buying the same car brand new. Of course that's why they lose resale value as soon as you drive them off, only reason to buy a car 0-3 years old if you're paying all cash.

I'm in the market for another car too, Montero was for the wife and uses too much gas for daily commuting. IMHO the nicest looking used cars are BMWs, they really maintain their looks well. 8-10 years old, you can find quite a selection for under $15k, but I'm scared to death to own a used car here again -- mechanics are fucking terrible.

Perhaps if I found a good specialist BMW autoshop that will overhaul and maintain used BMWs. Anyone know of one in Escazu/Santa Ana/Belen/Heredia area?

Otherwise I plan to get a 2007-2009 Suzuki Swift. You can find them between 15-20k with very low mileage.

Stick Japanese or German, you couldn't pay me to drive a Korean car.

There are also some really nice Audi's 2000-2003 in the 15-20k price range. Although anything more than 5 years old and/or 100km+ starts to itch my used car/mechanics fear.

$18k, year 2000 with only 77.5K km @ CRAutos.com

Slim, take a look at Hyundais (accent) 2007, you can get one for 11-12k and these are good cars...Hyundai is not what it used to be, different times now.

Also, gas/miles...best I've seen for a 1400-1300 cc. They look good as well.

My GF has one, she bought it at Grupo Q, brand new. They gave her an extra discount because of the few miles it had as it was on display.
Maintenance:Very cheap, trust me, I would not write an effin review of Hyundais if I didn't feel this is the best car either of us has ever had in this country.

FYI...

The thought has passed through my head over and over again, it is alot of money so of course it'll continue going round and round till Im sure of something.....

Im not a big spender (cause I dont have money) LOL but I'm looking at a price range of about 15 K......

Do you guys have any recommendations? Any cars you think are nice and good? Any cars you think are overrated or I should just completely erase from consideration?

All posts are appreciated

No opinions in used BMWs?

$15k gets you something much better looking and driving than a Hyundai.

(2001 318I @ CRAutos.com for $15,118)

Just how to know it's not a money pit.

Not bad...used is definitely the way to go here.

I called the other day to get a quote on a 2010 Rav4 and the clowns told me $38,900.

$42k for the smaller and uglier grand vitara.

Unreal how expensive tiny suv's are.

I don't want to act dumb, but his post was made back in the year 2003, and Slim last time I saw him he was driving a Suzuki Aereo, why if Tortillera brought this up do you guys continue seeking for a car when he bought it many years ago?

I think we all noticed this thread was bumped by Lesdo (except for Brad), but it's a good discussion to continue.

No interesting threads as of late anyway.

I had no freakin' idea, fucking Tortillera!

They ought to lock all threads older than 3 months.
