Antonio Gates - TE - Chargers Antonio Gates (questionable, foot) is listed as out for Sunday's Week 13 game on the Chargers website.
We've heard nothing from beat writer Kevin Acee, who is normally the first authority on Chargers' injury updates. For now, consider Gates' status questionable, but this wrinkle should prompt owners to at least add a contingency plan. December 4 - 10:37 p.m. ET

Antonio Gates - TE - Chargers Antonio Gates (questionable, foot) sounded more guarded about his playing status Friday after missing another practice.
"I don't know. It's rough. I couldn't go today," said Gates. Beat writer Kevin Acee is still giving Gates a "better than 50:50" chance of playing against the Chiefs. Gates owners can grab Randy McMichael as insurance, but we'd still be pretty shocked if Gates was inactive for the hugely important game. December 10 - 4:27 p.m. ET

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>To be clear, Gates firmly said he will try to play against the 49ers on Thursday. But he did not even test his foot in the pregame yesterday, and admitted he knew last Friday that he wasn't playing against the Chiefs. Gates remains a weekly game-time decision for now, but his pessimism has us worried. The Pro Bowler has missed three of the Chargers' last five games.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>"Might as well be out," confirms beat writer Kevin Acee. "I always hold out hope with Antonio, but at some point you have to be realistic," said coach Norv Turner after Gates failed to practice on Wednesday. Randy McMichael will start against the 49ers, and qualifies as a low-end TE2 in fantasy leagues. Expect a bump in targets for Vincent Jackson on Thursday Night Football. Gates appears to be targeting Week 16 at Cincinnati to return.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>With the Chargers already out of the playoff picture there's no reason for Gates to risk further injury. He'll have the entire offseason to get healthy and should be among the top 3 tight ends picked in 2011 fantasy drafts.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Gates got off to the hottest start of his career as fantasy's MVP through the first eight weeks of the season. He's played just two games since suffering a painful torn plantar fascia -- among other foot and toe injuries -- in late October. With 50 receptions, 782 yards, and 10 TDs, Gates will end the season behind only Jason Witten in tight end fantasy points despite playing just 10 games. He should be healthy by training camp, at which point he'll once again be the first tight end drafted.
