That's true bigten & always the arguement airlines use when comparing to automobiles, but.............

At least when I get in a crash (wreck) on the ground I have somewhat of a chance........
Common misconception. In fact, the vast majority of people involved in a plane crash live.

. The pilot in the plane last night had only three years flying experience.

wrong

"Records show that his first Federal Aviation Administration certifications were received in 2001. But for his public profile on a networking Web site, plaxo.com, Renslow listed his only professional flying experience as being with Colgan Air, from 2005 to present. "

about the "stick to main carriers" you would be surprised if you examined plane tickets in detail and find that in many cases smaller destinations have stuff that says "NWA flight xyz operated by Mesa Air /NWA link" or "AA xyz operated by American Eagle"

continental does not operate nor maintain those aircraft

exactly..... these are private carriers.. Continental has nothing to do with cogan air thats why there are CODE shares on flights and " operated By" on your Tickets if there is a codeshare

I guess its one thing that a lawyer could clarify.....they are the ones that normally help create this legal mumbo jumbos anyway

http://www.continental.com/web/en-US/content/travel/inflight/aircraft/default.aspx

as far as I understand these regional airlines.......Colgan Air operates the flight FOR continental DOING BUSINESS AS continental conneciton....now for the legal ramifications of this....who the hell knows

I sort of agree with you except that you can NOT show up at Colgan's offices and I say "I want to buy a ticket for Colgan Air flight number 1 from EWR to BUF"

Continental markets these flights EXCLUSIVELY.

it's not legal mumbo jumbo
all it is is a ticketing/marketing agreement
Continental does not operate the flight nor do they maintain the aircraft.
If a Mesa flight goes down should I blame USAir?

who owns the aircraft? I don't know and I imagine its the feeder airline but not positive.

as to who to blame, I don't know, I imagine it depends specifically on what flight number we are talking about as Mesa operates flights for 4 different airlines

I have never been involved in a dispute with a feeder airline so I don't know many of the fine prints as to "who do I complain to if a feeder flight gets delayed for non -weather reasons and I need accomodation?" but I imagine all such things are handled by the parent company

Saw there was a British Airways plane that "crash landed" on the runway in London yesterday evening as well, due to the nose wheel failing by the looks of it - thankfully only a few minor injuries in that case.

Even so, there seems to have been a few accidents happening lately and it really does make you wonder if it is just coincidence, or whether some of the airlines are starting to skimp a bit on maintenance costs due to the financial crisis...

First, I agree with you that they are responsible for the flight

But don't you think that directing a complain elsewhere takes away a bit from the 'we operate the flight'

no since that falls under the marketing/ticketing umbrella

They are now saying the pilot disobeyed airline rules and flew into the freezing rain/bad weather and was also on "Auto Pilot" at the time.

Air travel is very safe

Air travel on major carriers seems safer.

Last few fatal crashes I recall were on Colgan air, Delta Connection, that tiny airline down in Miami that only flew from Miami/Ft Lauderdale to the Bahamas, etc.

While maintenance might be part of the issue, I think pilot experience plays a big role.

Whenever I fly a major carrier, the pilots are generally 50.

When I fly one of the connectors or airtran or frontier or any of the other upstarts, they are usually 30. Many times I've watched pilots spend 20 minutes out of the cockpit hitting on the flight attendant. I've also seen flight attendants go sit in the cockpit. (Im sure they were just sitting).

Anyways, all air travel is very safe, but while Colgan air had a guy with limited experience who seems to have been on autopilot in an icing situation while many others landing in Buffalo were not, US Air had a guy who had 30 years of experiecne with 20 years of experience with gliding safety for the air force.
