Every year, I tell myself; to be very carefull when baseball season is over. In that I usually make a very small profit. But, of course, every year, I must bet football and Basketball. I can not remember when I EVER had a winning season.

I have no idea what the percentage of winning players longrun is on this board or in general population. My guess is that it's pretty low say about 10% or so. The books would not keep opening year after year if there was not a decent profit in it from their end. Don't be fooled by all the so called experts. For the real expert will NOT blow his own horn.

KevinLA - I've been betting for about 18 years and sucessfully for the last 12 but I lost for the first 5 years, broke even in the sixth and have been making profits ever since. You cannot expect to make profits when you are new to the game. I'd advise you to keep bets really really small for the first few years while you learn. The key is trying to establish an edge over the sportsbooks - whether thats information, analytical skills etc - that's the only way you'll make money. Further I'd advise you to specialise in one area - betting on everything is 100% guaranteed to ensure you lose and lose BIG.

Valueman, nice name reminds me of me. Almost everybody loses to start with. Good advice to wager small and increase as your knowledge grows. I think I like action a little to much but I hardly ever wager without an edge. I was going to start a post about how many days a year you DON'T have action. With me I can count them on 1 hand. When you can see value and play it then play everyday if you must (and I do). Every year I say this is the year I will add hockey to my arsenal, but because of hoops and my geographic handicap I never do. This site can turn a loser into a winner if he has it in him.

I reckon I bet on about 75 days a year if that and about 60-70% of the turnover is on about 25 days.
