Software probably not updated yet. Biden hasn't even signed it. Think the House passes the Senate version on Tuesday, Biden signs it this week, Software companies take another week or two to implement changes

I revised my thinking. The IRS has to implement the changes first, then the software companies, and the software companies have to deal with every state or city with income taxes. This may take up to one month to implement

We're so fucked. I think they have no choice but to extend tax season. Doing it sooner rather than later will enable us to focus on small business, the SBA and PPP loan applications which are due March 31st as of this moment

The accounting profession seriously cannot handle the volume they're throwing at us this year

And I've never talked like this before. It's surreal

Also if you have health insurance through the marketplace and had to pay back with your taxes, you may not have to pay it back

Bill passed...Saved me almost 2k..Let these fuckers die in their rot...
I'm thinking IRS/UC has to send out forms to show or go to their site to print as a credit to include...

I'll look around for copy of the bill that shows this credit..

The act extends these benefits so that jobless individuals now can receive an extra $300 in weekly unemployment benefits until early September. The Arizona Department of Economic Security said people who are eligible and are currently receiving benefits should see no disruption in payments.
Unemployment benefits normally are taxable, but the legislation exempted the first $10,200 in benefits received in 2020 from taxes for households with less than $150,000 in income. :toast:

$10,200 unemployment tax break: Don’t file
KEY POINTS

President Joe Biden signed the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 on Thursday. The $1.9 trillion Covid relief bill gives a federal tax break on up to $10,200 of unemployment benefits.
The IRS told Americans to wait to file an amended tax return if they received unemployment benefits in 2020 and already filed their taxes this year.
The IRS also issued instructions Friday on how unemployed workers should claim the tax break.

Jobless Americans should wait to file an amended tax return to get a new tax break on unemployment benefits received last year, the IRS said Friday.

The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, which President Joe Biden signed Thursday, waives federal tax on up to $10,200 of unemployment benefits for single adults who earned less than $150,000 a year in 2020. (The ceiling is $20,400 for two workers in a married couple.)

Amounts over $10,200 are still taxable. States may also decide not offer the tax break.

Those who filed a tax return before the $1.9 trillion Covid relief measure became law should wait to file an amended return until the IRS issues additional information, the agency said.

"For those who received unemployment benefits last year and have already filed their 2020 tax return, the IRS emphasizes they should not file an amended return at this time, until the IRS issues additional guidance," the IRS said Friday.

The IRS received nearly 56 million returns and processed nearly 49 million as of March 5, according to the agency.

About 40 million people received unemployment benefits last year, according to the Century Foundation. The average person got $14,000 in assistance.

A holding pattern may put some workers in a tough spot, especially those who paid a big tax bill on their unemployment benefits and must now figure out how to recoup the funds, said Janet Holtzblatt, a senior fellow at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center.

New tax instructions
The IRS on Friday also issued tax-filing instructions for those who hadn't yet filed a return.

"For those who haven't filed yet, the IRS will provide a worksheet for paper filers and work with software industry to update current tax software so that taxpayers can determine how to report their unemployment income on their 2020 tax return," the IRS said.

The 2020 tax-filing deadline is a month away, on April 15.

May 17th, I'll take it

Perfect actually. Another month is all I need, and it doesn't fuck with my summer. Plus I can take a few days off mid April

So... What happens if you already filed your taxes, received your refund, and/or paid the difference of what you owed.. And now are owed money due to the added child tax credit money?

Do you have to file an addendum or something like that to get your money?

You can file an amendment with your accountant, my guy in NY told me to reach out to him after I've received my refund and after 4/15.

As of right now, the child tax credit money has nothing to do with 2020 taxes

The only changes is the $10,200 for unemployment and if you owe money due to marketplace income (no update yet)

If you already filed your return and claimed taxable UE income, then you probably need to amend the return. The IRS does NOT want you to amend just yet.

I have never been on unemployment. So my question has nothing to do with that. But have read/heard on multiple fronts that the child tax credit for 2020 (or 2021?) with this new stimulus has been increased.

IRS is probably not accepting 2020 amendments filed electronically before August

Don't waste your time with a paper filing. Waiting until they accept electronically filed amendments will be quicker
