one of the best epsides ever was when Edith was almost raped...i remember my mom almost crying watching that , then literally "screaming" when she hit him with the hot pan and ran out....that was real emotion there......they said they got a 10 minute standing ovation when that live episode was over.....it was very real and good...

that wasnt George, that was his brother Henry.....you notice he just calls him Jefferson, not george.....Hemsley couldnt do the show til the following season, so they just wrote the character in, and waited til Hemsley could get to hollywood.....they used this other guy to play his brother, to have a "black male advisary" for Archie.......once they went to the Jeffersons, you only heard of Henry a couple of times...they were on AITF together for one episode as well....

This is Why I thought it was at First, and also remember him being the Brother.....

  • Sherman Hemsley, Isabel Sanford and Mike Evans as George Jefferson, his wife Louise and their son Lionel, Archie's African American neighbors. George is Archie's combative black counterpart, while Louise is a smarter, more assertive version of Edith. Lionel and Louise joined the show in its first season. Although previously mentioned many times, George was not seen until 1973. Hemsley, who was Norman Lear's first choice to play George, was performing in the Broadway musical Purlie and did not want to break his commitment to that show. However, Lear kept the role waiting for him until he had finished with the musical.
  • Mel Stewart, as George's brother Henry Jefferson. Stewart filled in for Hemsley. The two appeared together only once, in the 1973 episode in which the Bunkers host Henry's going-away party, marking Stewart's final episode and Hemsley's first. Even when the Jeffersons were spun off into their own show in 1975, Stewart's character was rarely referred to again and was never seen.
  • In the closing credits of the "The First and Last Supper" episode, Mel Stewart is incorrectly credited as playing George Jefferson. Stewart was actually playing George's brother, Henry Jefferson, who was pretending to be George for most of the episode

There was actually an album released of the 1st season before the show ever was aired...It wasnt the entire episode but kind of a cliff notes version. I can only imagine what it would bring on EBay if i still had the thing.... Back then someone in my family knew a DJ and he would give me all the records they got that they couldnt play...like that one ( another 1 called Flight NAACP109 but i digress)

Archie was actually in real life one of the nations biggest leftist along with Ed Asner they were the leaders of the left in the mid to late 70's....

All in the Family was a ground breaking sit-com, before that, all sit-coms were basicly "who do I take to the prom" or "woe is me I have a zit" or "Wally, what's wrong with the Beav?"

Married with Children was also a ground breaking sit-com, brought to light dysfunctional families.

MTM was ground breaking in a different way, focused a lot on women's issues.

Screw today's TV pc police.
The TV pc police ruined NYPD Blue.

was definitely groundbreaking.....for all them ore liberal we are now with language on TV , etc....we are far more restrictive on the PC issues, and All in the Family wouldnt even make it past a pilot in today's society, which is a sad commentary

Archie Bunker was based on Alf Garnett in Till Death Us Do part. The young guy in this clip is Tony Blairs wife's father. Note how Alf's he's calling indian and west indian immigrants as "coons".
