So many of us are walking around with heart problems and don't even know about it. Heart testing needs to be more thorough. Everyone over a certain age needs to take a nuclear stress test.

And I'm living proof. Five arteries 90% blocked (including 2 major ones) and never had any symptoms. Passed every physical, every EKG, never lacked energy, never short of breath. Arm pain that wouldn't go away made me go to the emergency room. Even then l passed the EKG. Two days later I had bypass surgery.

I'm told I'm better than i have been for 20 years.

THAT was your symptom....a good to go EKG doesnt mean one is out of danger.

[h=2]What is a Cardiac Catheterization?[/h]If the doctor thinks there is a high likelihood of narrowed blood vessels, even if a stress test or EKG were normal, the next step is a cardiac catheterization. In this diagnostic test, the coronary arteries are injected with dye and narrowing is identified.
A heart with narrowing in the coronary arteries is much more likely to have trouble in the future: either from a heart attack or from a fatal heart rhythm caused by decreased blood flow. What is done about the narrowing depends on how bad it is. A normal catheterization means that the likelihood of a heart attack in the near future is very low.

It's just a dye they pump you with and they take pictures of your heart's blow flow before and after being on a treadmill. You need to achieve 80% of max hart rate for a few minutes.

What is a Cardiac Catheterization?

If the doctor thinks there is a high likelihood of narrowed blood vessels, even if a stress test or EKG were normal, the next step is a cardiac catheterization. In this diagnostic test, the coronary arteries are injected with dye and narrowing is identified.
A heart with narrowing in the coronary arteries is much more likely to have trouble in the future: either from a heart attack or from a fatal heart rhythm caused by decreased blood flow. I understand that was a symptom Ricboff, my point being that in my case traditional screening did not detect a very significant problem over an extended period of time. Evidently, my heart (which is perfect to this day) was circumventing the blockage and was strong enough to pump blood through my body using alternate routes (I'm not a medical professional, so forgive my ignorance if any)

I believe a nuclear stress test enables doctors to see where the blood is flowing, so they would have seen there were blockages that nothing else detected. They would have seen blood was NOT flowing through two major arteries. I think the problem is that such a test is too expensive and insurance companies won't pay for it unless there's proof that it's necessary (kind of a catch 22 in my case)
