80,000 died of the flu last season. How come we didn't shut down the economy for them? So callous!

Now in the future a power-hungry Dem president and Congress will have the perfect precedent to do the same for "climate change" in order to "save the planet!!"

So how does one reconcile the actions of our government with the belief it's not a life threatening disease to the vast majority of us. Because of the threat to higher risk demographics. I believe, as we're told, that older people or or people with compromised immunity systems are at great risk. It might mean nearly certain death to some, like somebody with COPD. So these precautions are being taken to protect them. The loss of life in those demographics can be significant. Just look at what happened to the nursing home in Washington, where the deaths couldn't be stopped and spread like wildfire. Those are the people we're protecting

That's my theory, also supported by the nonstop drumbeat about high risk demographics

I could write a dissertation on this right now, but I'll spare you Willie and just focus on what you said. My issue is the disingenuous way the mortality rate is presented throughout the internet and with the media. If the media and many of these medical professional truly wanted to paint an honest picture, instead of just focusing on the mortality rate of seniors on this virus, they could make the comparison with all infectious diseases. I suspect you would find similar numbers. To sit there and make claims about people in their 70's and 80's without something to compare it to just show what the narrative is to me. The life expectancy in the US is like 79 years old. It's clear people in this group have a higher mortality rate for any disease (not just this one). But I guess the Nielsen ratings get better if you make it appear like this is some special case and people in that age range don't have problems with everything down to the common cold.

On another note, I am temporarily unemployed because my health club shut down. We don't have a concern on the financial side, but my employer has shown their true colors through this thing. Prior to shutting down on Monday, we were training our clients and there was ongoing cleaning going on. This whole close proximity rule had been out there for weeks (the new buzzword is social distancing). After they close, they sent out an email saying it was forbidden to train people outside the facility (not in our contract) and they started preaching how we could put all our clients in extreme risk, etc. So the two weeks before and leading up to Monday, it was no problem (again, all this info was already known), and the day after we close, it's not. Then they send out an email to the clients that we would be practicing "social distancing" and doing Skype workouts (which was news to all of us and never discussed)...clearly so they could keep their revenue stream going. Most of these people wouldn't know how to Skype, not to mention, many have balance issues. Quite frankly, training like that would be just as irresponsible and would probably get someone hurt badly. The whole thing is one, big clusterfuck.

i dont think Trump would put the economy to lay in the balance if the threat was minimal. He's a businessman, doeant add up. The big question is after this short shut down across N America, do they let businesses get back to work? going to be ugly if thats a no

from another forum ( a small business owner);

'Can I STOP paying rent during the COVID-19 crisis?'

if this is extended, how does this end well?

Trump was forced in a corner.....whether this is end of the world or a farce......he comes out of this in a win/win situation

I hope they recover soon Willie.....the main thing is how fast and contagious this thing is....people are comparing the regular flu to it and it's different because of how fast it spreads that's the main concern here. And yes I think the numbers we are seeing are way off...I'm reading every 30 minutes it seems how many more are infected it's getting insane. We need to slow this thing down!

Do you think the numbers of the flu are legit? Does every person who gets a strand of common flu goes to the doctor?

this work stoppage has to be short lived, get people back to work, CANNOT crush the economy, that's a fuckin double whammy . In S Korea there was little panic, no hoarding toilet paper. Clear communication between govt/health agencies and citizens. Fuck govt is texting citizens with updates. Thye r over the hump/peak apparently. Here in N American we have panic, no one knows who to believe, no clear direction..

Probably because nobody believes our media.....and that's warranted on how trash it has become.

Come on man. I support most of his policies but aside from his decision to close the border to Asian/Europe, his administration hasn’t done great. The testing situation is substandard and the economy is crashing. I told you guys the media took advantage of this situation to impact his re-election and it’s exactly what’s happening.

The economy and testing sits squarely on his shoulders. He’s in charge and has to own the situation.

Politicians are the elected leaders in their communities. Of course they should be the face of the pandemic in each community across the country.

I hope you are kidding....

Uh no. Politicians are the voice of their communities backed by the medical community. When a state holds the press conference, the governor speaks backed by medical experts etc. Look at the big picture please. There’s much more going on in communities than medical.

It’s a joint endeavor.

Who is getting sick, and how sick? A breakdown of coronavirus risk by demographic factors

<header class="content-header " style="z-index: 1; width: 704px; margin-bottom: 24px; padding: 0px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); margin-right: 0px; margin-left: 0px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><figure class="media" style="margin: 0px;"><figcaption class="media-label" style="box-sizing: border-box; width: 704px; padding: 11px 0px; color: rgb(153, 153, 153);"><cite class="media-credit" style="display: block; max-width: 768px; margin-top: 1px; font-style: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-stretch: normal; font-size: 9px; line-height: 1.5; font-family: Circular, sans-serif; letter-spacing: 2px; text-transform: uppercase;">MIKE REDDY FOR STAT

The new coronavirus is not an equal-opportunity killer: Being elderly and having other illnesses, for instance, greatly increases the risk of dying from the disease the virus causes, Covid-19. It’s also possible being male could put you at increased risk.</cite></figcaption></figure></header><section class="the-content" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For both medical and public health reasons, researchers want to figure out who’s most at risk of being infected and who’s most at risk of developing severe or even lethal illness. With that kind of information, clinicians would know whom to treat more aggressively, government officials would have a better idea of steps to take, and everyone would know whether they need to take special, additional precautions.
Here’s what research has shown three months into the outbreak:

Old and young
The vast majority of cases in China — 87% — were in people ages 30 to 79, the China Center for Disease Control reported last month based on data from all 72,314 of those diagnosed with Covid-19 as of Feb. 11. That probably reflects something about biology more than lifestyle, such as being in frequent contact with other people. Teens and people in their 20s also encounter many others, at school and work and on public transit, yet they don’t seem to be contracting the disease at significant rates: Only 8.1% of cases were 20-somethings, 1.2% were teens, and 0.9% were 9 or younger. The World Health Organization mission to China found that 78% of the cases reported as of Feb. 20 were in people ages 30 to 69.

The death toll skews old even more strongly. Overall, China CDC found, 2.3% of confirmed cases died. But the fatality rate was 14.8% in people 80 or older, likely reflecting the presence of other diseases, a weaker immune system, or simply worse overall health. By contrast, the fatality rate was 1.3% in 50-somethings, 0.4% in 40-somethings, and 0.2% in people 10 to 39.
