I have as much of a distaste for religion that you have, given all the evil it has brought about. However, religion is what motivates people. So much so that they are willing to kill for it.

To outlaw religion would cause more problems than it solves since the place that outlawed it would be in turmoil. Allowing people to practice their religion is the lesser of 2 evils.
