The new face of American family life

A Monitor photographer captures a moving image of a father and daughter spending time together.

By Melanie Stetson Freeman | Staff photographer of The Christian Science Monitor
The mosque, with minarets and dome, rises exotically out of the flat earth near Toledo, Ohio, reminding me how multicultural America is. Inside, the prayer room is bright, with colorful stained-glass windows high up in the dome.
This mosque is known for being open-minded and inclusive – Shiites and Sunnis from different nations pray side by side. One side of the room is for men only. It's separated from the women's area by a waist-high wall. I'm surprised by the modesty of the women in attendance, who wear full head scarves and long skirts inside the mosque.
One little girl moves between her father and grandfather on the men's side during the prayer. Her father holds her in his arms as the imam delivers the sermon. As the father kneels toward Mecca with the group, his daughter is left upright in a sea of prayer. I love how she clings to her father, unsure, yet fascinated by the photographer who is peeking out from the side door. The image is a snapshot of America today: a father and daughter spending a typical day together.

:WTF: Holy shit, part of America has already thrown in the fuckin' towel to run a headline like that on a photo like that. Break out your berkas and korans everybody! This is the NEW FACE of American family life.:nohead:

It must be really difficult to be afraid all the time. How do you leave your house?

Not afraid...just wondering how the fuck that photo represents the NEW FACE of the American Family. I had no idea the American family has changed so much since 9/11 that it is now identified with Islamic mosques in rural Ohio. How the fuck does that photo represent anything other than what it is, some Muslims praying in a mosque in Toledo?

The headline is what bothered me. I didn't even mind the photographer slobering all over the caption, describing what a beautiful and moving image she just captured.

She describes the mosque as rising "exotically out of the flat earth". I wonder if she'd still find it exotic if she were living under Islamic law, got sexually assaulted and had her own family trying to kill her to protect it's honor.

I guess that's the point AL. In America, under US law, she can practice islam and not be apart of its more radical morals/laws.

I suppose the photographer should have said "A new face of American Family Life"

I agree...that would've been a little more subtle, although I don't know how that is a "new face". It's not like these mosques just went up last month, and there were Muslims in the U.S. long before 9/11 obviously. Don't know how this is something new. Maybe it was "new" to the photographer. Maybe she has discovered the religion of peace, because that's the feeling I'm getting. But declaring this as "The New Face of American Life" was far too aggressive for my tastes. I shot off the link to Michelle Malkin and hyscience.com. We'll see if they do anything with it. I might be hypersensitive to shit like this, but even you, Massmil, agreed that the headline was a tad agressive.

I think you're confusing the word exotically with preferable. Take a deep breath and calm down.

Religion should be abolished world wide.
Because you disagree with it? You seem to like abolishing everything that you don't agree with. We'd need 6 billion worlds if we wanted to get rid of everything that every person disagreed with.

Robfunk doesn't realize that man would find other reasons to kill each other if religion was removed from the equation.

It's the First Amendment, liberal style.
