Vending machines, ATM's, other "self service" enterprises are grossly overrated. All of the good ideas have come and gone, and the only people who see any real future in vending are the people who are selling the machines.

If you can find an established route for sale and see paperwork on it going back a while, then it might be worthwhile -- but don't look to get a big return on your investment. What you could get for $ 50k would probably only net $ 10-15k per year in income, and you have to work the route (or pay someone else to and cut your profits.) The tradeoff there of course is that you are not taking nearly the risk you would be with a "virgin" route.

Jman check this site out, you can research all franchises and their start-up costs.

Entrepreneur

They also offer some excellent start up guides (around $50) that will get you around franchise fees if you are a real go-getter. You can also look for your local S.C.O.R.E. chapter. Service core of retired executives. They assist start ups free of charge. If you feel you need constant support, a franchise is certainly the way to go.

I have no idea about this, but you know what seems like a viable business op? Owing part of a franchise. With 50K I dont know how far you can go in for, but I would think that a McD's would cost about 400-500K to open. You can own a minority share and if it does well it doesnt seem like too bad of a gig. A venture like this requires substantial research. Just a thought. GL.

Or...you could just put it all on the Red Sox to win the Oak series at 4-1.

Doc, funny you mentioned this. I looked a few years back and the franchise fee by itself was over 200K, plus you needed to show that you could afford to build/renovate a building. Because pretty tought to rake up that kind of dough ....
how does one get into the "minority ownership" side of thinks? (besides buying stock .. lol)
