Chilling pictures of the scene where three police officers were shot dead in Baton Rouge on Sunday show how they appear to have been cornered by a dumpster.
Numerous blood stains on the parking lot where the slaughter took place shows where they fell after being fired on by 29-year-old Gavin Long.
At least eight bullet holes - some three inches long - had torn through the back of the Hair Crown Beauty Supply in the Louisiana city.
The angle suggests that Long was firing across the car park and along the back of the warehouse-like building at the officers.
The gun battle happened on Sunday morning during which Long fatally shot three cops and injured at least three more.
The three dead police officers have been identified as Montrell Jackson, 32, a new father and ten-year veteran of the force; Matthew Gerald, 41, a former Marine who joined the Baton Rouge police force a year ago; and Brad Garafola, 45, a married father-of-four who had worked for the sheriff's office for 24 years.
Nicholas Tullier, 41, an 18-year veteran, is still in hospital in critical condition, while 51-year-old Bruce Simmons, who had been with the department for 23 years, has been treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
A third wounded officer, also aged 41, has not been named. All of the officers were married with families.
A full 12 hours on after the police cordon had been removed, the smell of death was still present.
The blood stains on the floor suggest that some of the officers sought cover by the dumpster as they came under fire.
Adjacent to the dumpster was a four-foot-by-three-foot patch of dried blood where a body appears to have been lying on the floor.
A few feet away a pile of three pallets had been moved from another large pile of blood had dragged more blood along the concrete.
Across the car park there were at least six puddles where efforts had been made to wash away the blood.
Much of it had been cleared away but large globules of it were still visible in some.

Some of the chaos of what happened has been revealed by police dispatch recordings, which began at 8.40am on Sunday with reports of a man walking with an assault rifle near the beauty store.
Two minutes later, at 8.42am, the first shots were fired.
The next audio on the recording is an officer saying frantically: 'Shots fired, officer down, shots fired, officer down!'
Another officer shouts: 'I don't know where he's f*** shooting from'.
Amid the panic another officer shouted: 'We do not have a 40 on the shooter, he is not in sight, possibly a sniper.'
An injured officer can be heard saying: 'I'm hit, left arm.' A few seconds later an officer is heard saying he has 'eyes on the subject'.
A call then went out for an armored vehicle to collect the officer who had been shot.
