Looks like an agreement is made for a 60 game season.....but many players will sit out. Get ready to see many AAA and AA players. This is going to be ridiculous this season will mean NOTHING in the record books as far who wins what in the end. Scrap the season already both sides have taken way too long to get their heads out their asses and make a decision either play or don't play

Why do you think a majority of players will opt to sit out?

Two demos most likely to abstain:

1) Players who have earned $10m+ over past one to three years. They are most able to fade a "season" at 40% salary
2) Pitchers of almost any contractual status. The risk of extended injury vs competing in a faux 'season' for very dubious reward (We Won The 2020 WS!!) likely inspires many in this group...especially if also in Group1, to sit out, stay in proper shape and target Feb 2021

I don't follow baseball so I don't really care but seems like many of the good players will want to sit out. And since baseball players are barely famous anymore, it isn't like this is really going to hurt their brand or anything.

I'd imagine there are a decent amount of players who aren't scared of COVID just like many posters on this board aren't scared of COVID. They are probably pissed they haven't been able to play yet and are looking foward to just playing baseball. In addition to getting paid and service time, etc.

The "scared" players will be most vocal and make the news the most. But I'd imagine some players are tired of being locked down and just want to play the game they love aside from all the economics.

A reasonable POV

MLB players of true note who have succeeded in earning 4+ years of service are in best bargaining position of any North American pro athlete

Also a fair observation

It's reasonable to see a percentage of players both within and outside the two demos I mentioned above as preferring to not participate in a workplace with hundreds of other coworkers (both on-field and support workers) until the COVID19 story demonstrates a clearly lowered risk

All in all, the lead post of "60% of players may abstain" is probably not far off what we will actually see if MLB actually implements this highly truncated plan for a 2020 season

I agree to an extent....even though we all look at it as "game" this is their "job". You have to ask yourself if your hourly wage was let's say 25$ and your employer asked you to come to work for $15 would you go to work and be happy because you love your job that much? The % of players you are describing is very low IMO. If I had to bet Id say a very high % want to scrap the season and prepare for 2021 for multiple reasons..Covid, Pay, 60 games, no fans to name a few

Im praying that all professional sports gets taken down a peg.. They've crossed the line with alot of their actions.. If they think that the country as a hole is going to take a big hit , and expect things to get back to normal with full stadiums and high ticket prices to hear these elites preach to us , they got another thing coming

Astute....and unfortunately, it's a very tenuous analogy to compare almost any other "job" with that of an MLB player

You and I *might* work for 60% of habitual salary for a few months depending on our stash of backup resources

And we would also likely risk being replaced if we failed to accomodate the short term reduction

95% of MLB players have little fear of being replaced during the next 10 months, especially when their potential replacements will be very limited wrt their being able to demonstrate superior worth between now and March

I'd certainly agree about the part with players not wanting to play due to "principals" and being pissed at the owners side. Then there will be some really scared of COVID. There will be some who don't want to be isolated away from their families that long.

The only thing from previous posts I'd say wouldn't be a factor is the "scared of injury" factor. I could be wrong. As long as they don't allow the teams to overwork them which doesn't happen much anymore. And maybe a shorter spring training. I'd think 100 IP for the year would be perfect to keep pitchers sharp and limit their risk of injury due to a heavy load. Just when they might start getting "dead arm" the season will be over.

they arent playing for less money per game, just less games. Its like you work said we need you for 3 months at $25 an hr then you free to do as you choose for the rest of the time. sure they are making less, but they are also working alot less time too

60% of MLB players are not set for life financially, especially to live by the standards they're dreaming about. Hence they want to work

IMHO

Not a fair analogy. Analogy would be you make $25/hr to work from 8am-4pm, you haven’t worked in 3 months, and they offer you $25/hr to work 8-1pm. Rate is still the same.
