" Last Kiss " is the saddest song I ever heard..

oh where oh where can my baby be, the lord took her away from me, she's gone to heaven so I got to be good, so i can see my baby when i leave this world..........

Awesome song. Should be amongst the top of the list.

Heartache and Misery? "Whippin Post" by The Allman Brothers Band

"I've been run down. I've been lied to. I don't know why I let that mean old woman make me out to be a fool. She took all my money. Wrecked my brand new car. Now she is with one of my good time buddies and they are drinking in some crosstown bar. Sometime I feel, sometimes I feel, like I have been tied to the whippin post, tied to the whippin post, tied to the whippin post. Good Lord I feel like I'm dying."

Pretty much says it all in my book. Anybody else every been there?

Bab's "the Way We Were", none other even close. Any Orbison. Willy's Why Do I Have To Choose & Blue Eyes in The Rain. The C&W people have it down. Dolly I Will Always Love You. Tony B's flip of SF, "Once Upon A Time"!! :drink:

C&W is great for heartbreak songs. Here is one of my favorites. There are so many.

But Blues songs by their very name are some of the saddest heartbreak songs. "The Thrill is Gone" by BB King.

Several good additions by RXers. Here are some more (in no particular order):

"Rainy night in Georgia" Brook Benton
I find me a place in a box car, so I take my guitar to pass some time
Late at night when it's hard to rest I hold your picture to my chest and I feel fine
But it's a rainy night in Georgia, baby, it's a rainy night in Georgia
I Feel it's rainin' all over the world, kinda lonely now And it's rainin' all over the world

"The worst that could happen" Brooklyn Bridge
Girl, I heard you're getting married.
Heard you're getting married.
This time you're really sure.
And this is the end
They say you really mean it.
This guy's the one that makes you feel,
So safe, so sane and so secure.

And, baby, if he loves you more than me,
Maybe it's the best thing.
Maybe it's the best thing for you,
But it's the worst that could happen to me.

"Eleanor Rigby" Beatles
Eleanor rigby died in the church and was buried along with her name
Nobody came
Father mckenzie wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave
No one was saved

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?

"Paint it black" Rolling Stones
I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes

"Kentucky Rain" Elvis Presley
Seven lonely days and a dozen towns ago
I reached out one night and you were gone
Don't know why you'd run, what you're running to or from
All I know is I want to bring you home

So I'm walking in the rain, thumbin' for a ride
On this lonely Kentucky backroad
I've loved you much too long; my love's too strong
To let you go, never knowing what went wrong.

Kentucky rain keeps pouring down,
And up ahead's another town that I'll go walking through
With the rain in my shoes, searchin for you
In the cold Kentucky rain, in the cold Kentucky rain.

"And I Miss You" Everything But The Girl
I step off the train
I'm walking down your street again and past your door
But you don't live there any more
It's years since you've been there
But now you've disappeared somewhere like outer space
You've found some better place
And I miss you - like the deserts miss the rain

"Ain't got time anymore" Glass Bottle
Used to take an interest in the state of affairs
Now I only know how much I'm missing that girl
Hope the world will understand
I can't lend a hand
Cause she ain't mine anymore
I don't feel fine anymore
She ain't mine anymore
No, I don't feel fine anymore
Ain't got time anymore

"MacArthur's Park" Richard Harris
Spring was never waiting for us, girl
It ran one step ahead
As we followed in the dance
Between the parted pages and were pressed,
In love's hot, fevered iron
Like a striped pair of pants
...
And after all the loves of my life
After all the loves of my life
I'll be thinking of you
And wondering why.

MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down...
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!
Oh, no
No, no
Oh NO!!
