As for Oregon being hyped. I have certainly sensed that the hype has diminished somewhat due to various issues but perhaps that is just on my end.

I find it interesting but short sighted. These articles never scratch much below the surface. To me it is fluff. I'll tell anyone here how good I think Oregon will be once I get a sense of the Oline about half way through fall camp. I'll say that it is an easy spot to highlight as a concern due to losses and spring camp dings but I'll also say that the depth on the line is very good and is as well coached as any unit in the country. (Greatwood just won the national oline coach of the year award).

If Oregon cannot gel quickly at the line, then the year will be a dissapointment with potential losses to BSU, UTAH or Cal being possible. If they do gel, then they have the potential to begin the year at 4-0 and perhaps be in the top 5 or so. We'll just have to see what happens.

I suppose that the key question with any of these teams is whether or not they are reloading or rebuilding. At USC for the most part it is a reload, the only reservation one would have is at QB because it is such a vital position. If I had to lay odds that they'll come through the transition unscathed, I would say 50/50. To beat that team the stars have to align perfectly and it has almost never mattered that their qb play has been less than spectacular.

Ducks:

I do not know of anyone on here that knows more about Oregon than you.
I can't wait to get your final take on the Oregon/Boise St. matchup.

The Utah game probably should be listed in the ? category but Ore is at home with Utah and Ore as usual has a couple horses in their backfield.

If we split the ? games, this will be a five or six win season for ducks fans and somewhat likely no bowl game.

Sorry GS

You put a harmless posting on here and you know who has to play puppet master. When that certain someone starts writing things like when the writer of that article included Oregon it "looked like" he was filling in because of some kind of prejudice or predispostion" (against Oregon). Wow, Conan the mind reader, or what do you call someone who puts his words into someone else's mouth. Psychic or psycho? This from a guy who DEFENDS facts and unreasonable conclusions. Allrighty then.

I wouldn't be too quick to call Cal and USC automatic losses when those games are played at Autzen Stadium. One of the best homefield advantages in the country.

Ducks, I haven't really seen much Oregon hype out there. The only indication that they are expected to be good this season are the preseason polls, which are at least 40%-50% meaningless. I'm trying to figure out why anyone would make such a claim (national level) when about the only real positive has been some Masoli love. But I don't think 1 in 3 east of the Mississippi has ever heard of him.

For my money, I'll bank on Kelly to get'r done. I have not come right out before this as you have also stated some reservations about their OL. So be it. I checked out their depth chart and as I am not 100% up on the experience factor, I see some big bodies and there aren't many RS freshmen etc. to be found. They are petty young with only one Sr. TE Ed Dickson. The rest are soph's and Jr.s with I think one RS freshman.

Blew my mind to find as many older guys hanging around the DL. heh I thought that was where the greenhorns were to be found. DL seemed like a bigger concern if I remember spring camp correctly. Nothing like a little depth chart to put things into perspective. Hope they can stop the run. They will need it @Boise. And I hope someone gets after Moore becasue that kid can throw the football. Just a Soph too. heh.

I think Purdue and Utah are very doable this year. Purdue lost Painter, their QB who should be signed by now to an NFL contract and Utah lost QB Brian Johnson and Louis Sakoda (PK) and a lot more than just them. 2 new upstarts get to play one of their first if not their first road game @Autzen. Cruel. I really doubt that whoever those 2 send out here will be = Kellen Moore. He still plays for Boise, doesn't he? heh

heh = nervous laugh

Well, I find it very hard to see this outcome happening (particularly losing to uw), but if this is how you see it you will most likely be presented with an opportunity to make money betting the UNDER oregon season total...

Since 2001 Ore is 38-13 at home, losing at least one home game each year.

That includes the 2006 game they stole from Oklahoma.

Beating teams like Utah St, Houston, Montana, and Idaho early every season does not impress me and it should not deserve a home dominance label.

Just my opinion, but 2009 looks to be a down year for Ore and I plan to be betting against them.

Well, you can pick those games to further your point but if your telling me that beating Michigan, Michigan St, Wisconsin, USC several times, and scores of ranked conference opponents failed to leave an impression then you are finding a way to rationalize your position.

Oregon does not enjoy its reputation for being an intimidating place to play by happenstance.

But, as you say it is your opinion. I'll leave it at that.

This team may not qualify as a dissapointment since they only won 7 last year, but South Carolina shows signs of being terrible.

I expect them to lose at ncst the first week and if that happens say goodbye to Spurrier and bowl hopes and hello to five or less wins and a new coach next year.

SC 4-8 or worse this season.

Possible Disapointments

They only went 5-7 Ly so it may seem impossible to disapoint after that, but if Tennessee only matches that mark a lot of people in Tennessee are going to be pissed. How many dollars a win would that break down as?
It takes no stretch of the imagination to see 5-7 or worse again but expectations are much higher at least in Tennessee. Let me see now, Lane Kiffins record in his collegiate careet is........0-0. I don't know if you would hire him as a scout much less as a someone to lead your troops into battle. It could be as bad a Custer's last stand by the time it is over. Oh and there is a rumor he pissed off some SEC coaches during the off season but that shouldn't really be a factor should it.

I'm curious about The Cocks as well. Spurier pretty much cleaned house after last year and has a whole new coaching staff. My Game Cock buddies say that there is a new attitude over there and is hopefull but I don't know. Garcia should be a more capable QB this year but they lost quite I bit to graduation if I'm not mistaken.

SC likely loses the opener at nc st and that will be all she wrote for their season.

Just like last season 56 -6 I would love to see Meyer put an ass kicking on spurrier and sc but this year do it in Columbia.

I went on the SC site and obtained the following information. There are several new coaches but Spurrier's son is still there.

New DC, New Strength Coach, new QB Coach, New Running game Coordinator/OL Coach, new RB/Asst SPT coach, and new TE/ Asst SPT coach. Same old ship, same old captain, and now a new crew. Better check that ship for leaks.

I Wouldn't Put Either FAU OR ARST In The W

Just yet, A W probably, but I can see both as a NON cover for the Huskers.

As far as Nebraska's record is concerned, I think it is safe to say that they should have 5 home wins locked up. Those are Floroda Atlantic, Arkansas State, La. Lafayette, Iowa State, and Kansas State. I can see two very probable losses, those being at Va. Tech and home against Oklahoma. The rest of their away games will determine how well the season goes for them. I can see 3-7 losses for this team, depending on whether or not they can win on the road and how far T-Tech falls.[/quote]

Nebraska Depth Chart

I tried to post the Nebraska depth chart from 12/22/2008 but it won't post. It can be found on rivals.com. I compared the depth chart to the new roster for the 2009 season and found the following:

Offense - 29 players on the depth chart, 12 are lost, 17 return
According to that depth chart they lose the following starters:
QB, RB, FB, (2) WR, OT, OG, C (Steele shows 6 returning starters?)
Defense - 24 players on the depth chart, 7 are lost, 17 return they lose the following starters: (2) DT, (2) LB, (1) Safety (Steele shows 7 returning starters)

This points out a side bar regarding returning starters. You will find differing figures. I orginally picked them off of the depth charts back in January and I kept finding discrepencies. It is an inexact number that you can take or leave as far as accuracy goes. I finally decided to use Steele's numbers to establish a consistent source for my base numbers. You get into the how many games did they start, etc.

But it looks like Nebraska is going to redshirt about 33 players in 2009.

I can confirm that they return players who scored an avg of 15 ppg in 2008 and players who made 61.5% of the tackles in 2008. As shown above they are going to start a new QB, HB, FB, and (2) WR's. In addition they lose their punter, punt returner, fg holder, and long snapper.

That is why they are my mystery team. Steele shows them at #19 on his Power Poll Top 120 and projects them to have an avg. point differential of +10 ppg. Many forecasters have them way up on their charts too. I am going to drag my feet for a while and see how far their defense can take them until their offense finds itself. I think they are over rated but they could prove me wrong.

Russ...I really can't blame Phil Steele for picking Nebraska number 1 in the North. This is the most logical choice given their schedule, their turnover margin and their + total yards per game from last season. Plus, Pelini was able to guide this team to a 9-4 record last season with just 11 starters returning. They have 13 this year. But this year we will see just how good of a coach Pelini is. Even though their schedule is the most favorable in the Big 12 North, it is still tougher than last season. For one thing, Pelini had a chance to get comfortable in his job last season when the Huskers got to play their first 5 games at home. They also had the advantage last season of having some upperclassmen at some key positions on the field. Their big 3 skill players Ganz, Lucky and Nate Swift were all seniors last season. 3 out of the 5 players on the O-Line were seniors with experience including Big 12 second teamer Slauson. The only starter left over from last season is center Hickman.. There is a little less experience there this season protecting all new skill players. So you have to figure the chemistry isn't going to be there right away. Their great defensive lineman Suh was surrounded by all experienced seniors last season. So it made Suh's job a little easier. Those guys are all gone this season. So Suh may be carrying more of the load. The Huskers look to be strong in the defensive backfield, but their LB's will have two redshirt freshmen on that unit. So who knows how they will perform. I still think that with the walk-on program combined with their good job of redshirting that this is a team built for the future. But with their away games at Missouri, Kansas, Colorado and Baylor, if they can steal 2 out of 4 of those games then I think they have a decent chance to either tie or win the North outright. But none of those teams will be easy to beat on their home fields. If we get away from the numbers game for a second, I think the main issue with Nebraska this year is going to be leadership. Who will fill that position on both sides of the ball with so much of their longtime team leaders now gone? This is the main question I have with this team. When things start to go south on the road will this team be able to recover? The only two Big 12 teams they beat on the road last season was Kansas State and Iowa State. The bottom dwellers of the North. They'll have it a little tougher this year. Every team they play on the road this season is a potential bowl team.

Great take on Nebraska by the way. I respect Pelini and he did wonders LY but like you said he had experienced players in key positions. That is not the case this year They lost 12 5th year seniors and 23 lettermen including a very good QB. In addition they had 34 starts lost to injuries LY so that may account for the returning player numbers differing from one source to the other. You have to have offense to survive in the Big 12, no way around it. I can see them losing 4 of their last 5 games (at Baylor, OU, at Kan, and at Colo. Texas Tech may just out score them, and they have VT on the road. It is very hard for me to just make that leap of faith jump.
By the way, I cannot get over "Children of the Corn". I find myself just driving down the road and that pops in my mind. I will say this though they have great fans. They are classy and respectful and add a lot to that program.

Russ..If I had to pick a second favorite team out of the Big 12 it would be Nebraska. In many ways they have mirrored Oklahoma over the years in the way they do things and run their team. Their fans are the best out there. That's why I have a suscription to the Red Sea Scrolls, because it is hands down the best team message board in the country. So the Children Of The Corn, which they fondly call themselves, are as fantatical as any fans that I've ever seen. And I've never met a bad Huskers fan when they've come down to attend the OU/Nebraska football game. So I would like this team to get back to national prominence and to renew our rivalry. It would also make this conference much stronger overall to have them back.
