For Game 2, the Gators will likely start projected first-round pick Hurston Waldrep (10-3, 3.99 ERA). With Ty Floyd getting the nod for the Tigers in Game 1 and most of their top-end starters on short rest, it remains to be seen who will get the start for LSU in Game 2; however, pitching and bullpen depth will be a concern, at least for this game.
While Waldrep’s likely start should bode well for the Gators’ chances, they are coming off a deflating, extra-inning loss in which the offense was poor. Combined, the Gators punched out 20 times, which is horrible for the lineup’s confidence. While a different arm can mean reduced strikeouts for the Gators’ lineup, Florida’s offense is at a low point and will need to turn it around if they want a chance to take home a College World Series title.
On the other hand, the Tigers’ lineup will need to make the most of their opportunities against Waldrep to become the 13th team in the last 20 College World Series to win the series 2-0. The Tigers weren’t much better in the strikeout department in Game 1, punching out 17 times collectively; however, they smacked three home runs, which offset the whiffs.
LSU will need to do one of two things against Waldrep to win the title: reduce their strikeouts and continue to take walks (they drew 8 walks as a team in Game 1) or continue their power output. If they continue to strikeout without hitting the longball, it could be a long day for the Tigers.
