Central Division a driving force of ASG

If experience matters, the Central Division will have an edge at the NHL All-Star Game Saturday night in St. Louis.

Only two of its 11 players, winger David Perron and Jordan Binnington of the St. Louis Blues, are playing in this event for the first time. This squad features six players who have played in three or more All-Star Games.

Each of its selected players is expected to play at Enterprise Center, led by captain Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche and Chicago Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane.

The other division teams include multiple substitutions and one fill-in coach, with Arizona Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet taking over the Pacific Division team from fired Vegas Golden Knights coach Gerard Gallant.

The Central squad will also feature a home-ice advantage while deploying four Blues, including defenseman Alex Pietrangelo and center Ryan O'Reilly. Blues coach Craig Berube is at its helm.

"You want to come home, be the champion, especially in our building," O'Reilly said. "There's four of us. The feeling kind of rises. Let's give the fans what they want. They want to see our division be the strongest division."

On the down side for the Central team, neither goaltender comes into this competition on a roll. Binnington has a 3.57 goals-against average and an .865 save percentage in six January starts while Winnipeg Jets netminder Connor Hellebuyck is 3-5-1 this month with a 3.29 GAA and .898 percentage.

On-ice chemistry could also give the Pacific squad an edge. Tocchet can ride the dynamic duo of Edmonton Oilers forwards Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

"I'll talk to a couple of guys to see who they want to play with, but I'm sure Draisaitl and McDavid, I'll stay out of their way on that one." Tocchet said.

He can also feature forward/defenseman teammate combinations with Matthew Tkachuk and Mark Giordano of the Calgary Flames and Elias Pettersson with Quinn Hughes of the Vancouver Canucks.

"I like to play something for competition, not for nothing," Tocchet said. "I don't want players to get hurt. I think you have to have competitive juices in there. I'm not sure that you want 3-on-0s going back and forth. Maybe 2-on-1s, that's fine. But not 3-on-0."

The Metropolitan Division suffered the most casualties for this game. Washington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin opted not to play and forwards Artemi Panarin (New York Rangers), Jake Guentzel (Pittsburgh Penguins) and Kyle Palmieri (New Jersey Devils) bowed out due to injuries.

Also missing from the Metropolitan squad due to injuries are defenseman Dougie Hamilton (Carolina Hurricanes) and goaltender Joonas Korpisalo (Columbus Blue Jackets).

"It's tough to look at a team and say, 'Oh, they're a little bit weaker' or anything like that," O'Reilly said. "You have the elite of the elite. It's going to be tough."

The Atlantic Division team lost Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews to a wrist injury. Ottawa Senator forward Brady Tkachuk replaced Matthews, who is tied for second in the NHL with 34 goals this season.

"You want to compete out there and participate," said Matthews, who came to St. Louis to participate in off-ice activities. "Getting a couple of extra days to heal and rest is important, but I think it was also important for me to be here. It's a big honor to be selected for the All-Star Game."

NHL All-Star game betting predictions and picks: Central Division has the edge in 3-on-3 tournament
Rohit Ponnaiya

Dallas Stars forward Tyler Seguin will be playing in his sixth NHL All-Star game on Saturday. His Central Division team has +240 odds to win the 3-on-3 tournament this year.

If you like betting on the NHL, there's no reason to take a break this weekend just because the rest of the league is. The annual All-Star game in St. Louis on Saturday night should provide plenty of skills, thrills and betting intrigue.

For the fifth consecutive year the NHL All-Star game will consist of a 3-on-3 tournament between the best players from each of the four divisions. The new format has rekindled fan interest, creating a fast-paced, high-scoring environment that is perfectly suited for All-Star weekend.

The festivities begin Friday night with the skills competition, and the puck is dropped for the first game on Saturday evening at 8:15 p.m. ET between the Metropolitan and Atlantic Divisions.

Following that, the All-Stars from the Pacific and Central Divisions face off. The two teams that advance then play each other in the final game with the winning side receiving "one million dollars" to divide among their players.

If you're also hoping to cash in on the All-Star action on the ice this weekend, we break down the odds and give you the best bets for Saturday's games.

METROPOLITAN (+100) VS ATLANTIC (-120), OVER/UNDER: 12

While the Western Conference matchup is a pick'em, the Atlantic Division is the betting favorite out East. That said, the Atlantic squad is missing plenty of big names with Auston Matthews, John Tavares, Nikita Kucherov, Steven Stamkos, Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron all sitting out either due to injuries or simply being left out.

The Metropolitan won the tournament last year, beating the Atlantic 7-4 and then outscoring the Central Division 10-5 in the finals. But the Met will be without their best forwards in Alexander Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby and Artemi Panarin, as well as one of their top defenseman in Doug Hamilton.

The Metropolitan has plenty of young and hungry talent but their forwards currently aren't performing at the same level as the top forwards in the Atlantic.

The Atlantic also has the edge between the pipes with the Central Division's Braden Holtby arguably one of the biggest surprises to make a roster. The usually reliable Holtby has struggled with a GAA over 3.00 and a save percentage under .900 for Washington this season. We're leaning towards the favorites and with so much offensive fire-power missing from both teams we like the Under 12 as well.

PACIFIC (-110) VS CENTRAL (-110), OVER/UNDER: 12.5

Of course the big name here is Connor McDavid, the player widely considered the best player in the world at the moment. But McDavid might not have the help around him for the Pacific Division to move on.

The importance of having a quarterback at the back end of three-man hockey can't be overstated, and while the Central Division only has two defensemen (Alex Pietrangelo and Roman Josi), they're both among the four highest scoring blueliners participating this weekend.

The Central also has a terrific blend of pure offensive talents (like Nathan Mackinnon and Patrick Kane) and two-way players (Eric Staal and Tyler Seguin) among their forwards. We like the Central to prevail.

With so many great skaters and stick handlers on both sides, we're expecting a ton of scoring opportunities, even for an All-Star competition. Take the Over 12.5.

NHL ALL-STAR GAME WINNER

Atlantic +200
Pacific +210
Central +240
Metropolitan +290

We expect to see the Atlantic Division and the Central Division in the finals, but from there it feels like splitting hairs. Both squads have great players at each level, terrific skating ability, and netminders who are currently playing at a high level. But with the Atlantic missing the elite talents we named earlier, they might not have the depth of the Central.

Motivation also plays a big factor in friendly competitions like this, and with three St. Louis Blues players in action for the Central Division, expect them to put on a show for the hometown fans. We're backing the Central at +240.

Monday’s 6-pack
Teams who play players the least, when they have 2 fouls in 1st half:
353) Belmont
352) Western Illinois
350) Texas-El Paso
349) Wichita State
348) South Florida
346) Niagara

Quote of the Day:
“…….this was a man for all seasons. He was more than an iconic basketball player. He was someone who inspired millions of fans. For me, this is a God-awful day.”
Jerry West, talking about the late Kobe Bryant

Monday’s quiz
Which NBA general manager once got traded for Kobe Bryant?

Sunday’s quiz
Lions’ coach Matt Patricia went to college at RPI, an engineering school in Troy, NY.

Saturday’s quiz
When the ABA folded in 1976, these four teams joined the NBA:
Nets, Pacers, Nuggets, Spurs

******************************************************************************

Monday’s List of 13: Random thoughts on a winter day……

13) Was talking baseball with a friend the other day; he’s a lot younger than me. I was telling him about a 1987 trade between the Braves and Detroit.

Back then, Atlanta was a bad team, the Tigers were contenders, so Detroit sent a prospect to the Braves for 35-year old P Doyle Alexander, who was 5-10, 4.13 in 16 starts for the Braves that year. Alexander had a fine career (194-174, 3.76); he found a spark in Detroit after the trade and went 9-0, 1.53 in 11 starts, leading the Tigers to the playoffs.

Problem is, the prospect Detroit traded? A guy named John Smoltz.

Whoops.

12) If you finish lower than 8th in a conference, you should NOT be in the NCAA tournament, unless you win the conference tournament. No at-large bids, though.

These big $$$ leagues with their own TV networks (ACC, Big 14) jacked up their conference schedules to 20 games, which inflates their teams’ power ratings. Its an unfair game.

If you can’t finish in the top 8 in a league, how the hell can you compete for a national title?

11) It is conceivable that the 9th-place team in the Big 14 (Penn State, as I type this) is better than maybe the 2nd best-team in OVC or 3rd-best team in WCC, but too bad.

Mike DeCourcy is a fine sportswriter who also works on the Big 14 Network; he has 11 of their teams in his bracket. Well, of course he does, they pay him. You finish 11th in a 14-team league, your coaches should be recruiting in March, not preparing for the NCAA’s.

10) Sounds like robot umpires are going to be calling balls/strikes in the major leagues in the next couple years. I’m not in love with this idea, mostly because I don’t trust whoever it is who will be programming the robots. Too easy to screw over the small market teams.

9) If the NFL goes to a 17-game schedule, then each team could get two byes, and the Super Bowl could be the Sunday night of Presidents’ Day weekend, when everyone has Monday off.

Daytona 500 early in the day, Super Bowl at night; big sports day.

8) Former 5-star recruit Kahlil Whitney is transferring from Kentucky after playing 18 games, starting eight of them. Looking at his shooting stats (4-16 on arc, 10-23 on foul line), he needs to spend most of his free time over the next year working on his shooting.

7) Basketball upsets:
— California (+8) 52, Stanford 50
— Tulsa (+4.5) 79, UConn 75 OT

6) Oregon 96, UCLA 75— Bruins made 10-24 on arc, still lost by 21; they were down 22 at the half. Oregon forced 22 turnovers (+8), shot 63.6% inside arc. UCLA lost seven of its last ten games; they’re 10-10, 3-4 in the Pac-12, and will be lucky to make the NIT.

5) Tulsa 79, UConn 75 OT— Golden Hurricane wins its fifth game in a row; they outscored UConn 24-12 on foul line, were lucky that the Huskies made only 9-33 on arc. UConn lost six of its last seven games; losing last four games, two of them in OT.

4) Virginia 65, Wake Forest 63 OT— Deacons led by 12 in second half; they outscored Virginia 21-11 on foul line, but shot only 25.7% inside arc and couldn’t finish the job.

Three Cavaliers played 42:00+; Virginia won for only second time in their last six games, as they try and avoid falling off the NCAA bubble.

3) Maryland 77, Indiana 76— Terrapins blew a 14-point first half lead, but then scored the last seven points of game to sweep the season series. Both teams shot 55%+ inside the arc; there were a total of only 11 turnovers in this slow-paced (59 possessions) game.

2) Northern Iowa 67, Loyola 62 OT— Panthers blew an 11-point lead with 8:56 left, but won in OT and improve to 6-2 in Valley, tying the Ramblers for first place.

1) Obviously Sunday was a sad day, nine people dying in a helicopter crash in California, with Kobe Bryant and his daughter two of the victims.

Moral of the story, at the risk of being preachy: appreciate every day, because we’re not guaranteed anything. Lets be nicer to each other, and appreciate what we have.

In the Crease - Week 18

Entering the Second Half

The All-Star break signifies the unofficial second half of the season. Really, we're about three-fifths of the way home, as all teams have played at least 48 of a possible 82 games, with most teams logging 50-51 games, with the Vegas Golden Knights in the clubhouse with 52 completed games already.

As we got into the stretch run of the season, the Florida Panthers actually lead the NHL with 183 goals and 3.7 goals per game, also tops in the league. The Washington Capitals have 181 goals, but they're fifth in the NHL at 3.6 goals per outing. The Toronto Maple Leafs also have 181 goals overall, and they're Top 5 in goals per game (3.6), shots on goal (33.7), power-play success (24.4 percent) and faceoff wins (52.9 percent). However, they're 25th on the penalty kill, 26th in shots against (32.6) and 27th in goals against (3.3). On the other hand, the Detroit Red Wings have managed to light the lamp just 109 times, easily dead-last in the NHL, while ranking worst in goals per game (2.1), shots on goal (28.0) and a 73.2 percent penalty kill rate which is also 31st.

Looking Ahead

Tuesday, Jan. 28

St. Louis at Calgary:
It's a rare light Tuesday night, with just two games on the schedule. However, the Blues and Flames give us a potential Western Conference playoff series preview when they meet at the Scotiabank Saddledome Tuesday. The Blues played on Monday, and they're 6-1 in the past seven when working on no rest. They're also 12-5 in the previous 17 games overall, and 14-6 in the past 20 games against Pacific Division foes. For the Flames, they're 6-2 in their past eight games overall, and 4-0 in the past four against Western Conference teams, so something's gotta give. Looking at the head-to-head trends, the Blues are 4-1 in the previous five meetings, while the under has cashed in 21 of the past 29 meetings in Calgary.

Wednesday, Jan. 29

Toronto at Dallas:
Both the Maple Leafs and the Stars are feeling good about themselves after emerging from the All-Star break with victories against fellow contenders. The Leafs posted a 5-2 win at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on Monday, while the Stars turned back the Lightning by a 3-2 count in overtime at American Airlines Arena in the Metroplex. That's where this one will be played, too. The Leafs have won six of their past seven encounters on the road, and they're 7-3 in the past 10 following up a win. However, while they're 5-2 in the past seven against winning teams, they're just 2-5 in the past seven overall. The Stars are 14-3 in the past 17 against winning teams, 4-1 in the past five at home and 8-3 in the past 11 overall. The Leafs have dominated this series, however, winning four of the past five in Dallas, and eight of the previous 10 meetings overall. The 'dog is also barking, hitting in seven of the past nine battles in this series.

Vancouver at San Jose:
The Canucks also fired out of the chute with an impressive 3-1 win over the Blues on Monday, cashing as slight home underdogs. They just took care of the Sharks on the 18th before the break, winning 4-1 at home as moderate favorites. The under has connected in five in a row for the Canucks, as they're allowing just 1.4 goals per game during the span. The Sharks have struggled offensively, going 27th in the NHL with just 2.6 goals per game while checking in 25th on the power play at 16.5 percent. However, they are No. 1 on the penalty kill at an impressive 87.9 percent. The Sharks doubled up the Ducks 4-2 on Monday in their first game out of the break, snapping a three-game road skid prior to the ASG.

Thursday, Jan. 30

Los Angeles at Arizona:
The Coyotes have actually been more impressive this season on the road (14-10-3) than they have been at home (12-10-2), while the cellar-dwelling Kings haven't wowed anyone anywhere. They're a dismal 7-17-4 on the road this season, and their minus-33 goal differential is the second-worst in the Western Conference, and 27th overall in the NHL. The Coyotes won the last meeting in Los Angeles on Nov. 23 behind Antti Raanta by a 3-2 score, and 3-0 over the Kings on Nov. 18 in Arizona, also behind Raanta. Both Jack Campbell and Jonathan Quick have been on the losing end against the 'Yotes, but goal support would be nice.

Friday, Jan. 31

Vegas at Carolina:
The Golden Knights battle the Hurricanes at PNC Arena in Raleigh, the first of two meetings between now and Feb. 8. These teams have split their all-time series 2-2, with each team winning one of two on their opponents' ice. Last season the Golden Knights won 3-0 at T-Mobile Arena, but were blasted 5-2 in their only visit to Raleigh. In their inaugural season they belted the Hurricanes by a 5-1 count, but fell 3-2 in a shootout in the first-ever meeting. So who knows what's in store for this one. The Hurricanes have earned points in each of their previous six games at home, going 5-0-1 while outscoring their opponents by a 12-3 in the previous five.

Boston at Winnipeg:
The Bruins and Jets square off at MTS Centre in Winnipeg in the second and final meeting of the regular season between these two. They met 5-4 at TD Garden on Jan. 9, as Jaroslav Halak outdueled Laurent Brossoit in a high-scoring affair. That's been the norm at home for the Jets, too, as they have hit the over in six of their past nine games at MTS heading into the second half. And we all know Boston can score, as they rank third on the power play (25.5 percent), while ranking sixth in goals scored per game (3.3). However, they're also second in the NHL with just 2.5 goals allowed and fifth on the kill at 83.1 percent, so defense is strong with the B's, too.

Quote of the Day:
“Our names will be attached together for what we did. People always ask about our relationship, and I tell them it’s just like me and Charles. You’ve got two strong-minded people who are gonna get it done their way. We’re gonna say certain things, the respect will never be lost, but when it comes to being inside the lines and win, that’s what me and him did.”
Shaquille O’Neal, talking about Kobe Bryant

Wednesday’s quiz
Which Super Bowl was the first one with a single digit pointspread?

Tuesday’s quiz
Hank Aaron/Eddie Mathews combined to hit 863 home runs while teammates with the Braves.

Monday’s quiz
Sacramento Kings GM Vlade Divac was once traded for Kobe Bryant.

************************************************************************************************

Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

13) One of worst betting beats of the year happened in Minnesota Monday night, where the host Timberwolves (-3) led Sacramento by 17 points with 2:49 left to play.

They lost.

2:30 left: Fox makes a layup.
2:02 left: Hield makes a 3-pointer
1:46 left: Minnesota scores a hoop, leads 117-103
1:39 left: Fox makes two foul shots
1:05 left: Hield makes a 3-pointer
0:41 left: Barnes makes two FT’s
0:39 left: Minnesota makes two FT’s, leads 119-110
0:37 left: Hield makes three FT’s
0:31 left: Hield makes a 3-pointer
0:04.7 left: Fox makes a foul shot
0:03.6 left: Fox makes 2-point shot, regulation ends 119-119.

Kings won 133-129 in OT. Oy.

12) Yanni Wetzell is a 6-10 senior at San Diego State, which is 21-0, the last unbeaten team in the country. Last year, Wetzell played at Vanderbilt, which started the season 9-3 but never won another game, losing their last 20 games, going 0-19 in SEC play.

I’m guessing he is having more fun this year than he had last year.

12) Bucks 151, Wizards 131— What the hell is Washington doing? They were down 88-63 at halftime; could they at least try to play defense? Atlanta hung 152 on the Wizards Saturday and the Hawks aren’t very good. How about a little effort?

Giannis Antetokounmpo didn’t play by the way, making it even worse.

11) San Francisco 49ers trailed six games this year in 4th quarter; they won four of them.

10) Dolphins-Patriots will play a regular season game in Mexico City next season, with Miami being the “home” team.

9) Ouachita Christian HS’s girls basketball team is 26-0 and favored to win a state title in Louisiana’s second-lowest enrollment division; why do I mention this?

Their coach is Stan Humphries, who played QB for eight years in NFL, leading the Chargers to the Super Bowl 25 years ago. Pretty cool story, that a pro athlete struggled to find his calling after his playing days ended, but has done so successfully. Good for him.

8) Miami (OH) postponed its next men’s and women’s basketball games after news broke that two students are being tested for possibly having coronavirus.

7) Upsets:
— Texas A&M (+11) 63, Tennessee 58
— Buffalo (+7.5) 77, Akron 74
— Mississippi State (+4.5) 78, Florida 71
— Kent State (+3.5) 83. Toledo 70

6) Former Nebraska football coach Bo Pelini will be the new defensive coordinator at LSU, replacing Dave Aranda, who became the new head coach at Baylor.

5) New Jersey Giants hired former Browns’ HC Freddie Kitchens as their tight ends coach.

4) Colleges with most players in the Super Bowl:
5— LSU, Penn State
4— Iowa
3— Clemson, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Stanford

3) Conferences with most players in the Super Bowl:
24— SEC
19— Big 14
15— ACC
14— Pac-12

2) Cincinnati Reds were 24-33 in one-run games LY; thats five more one-run losses than any other big league team (Seattle lost 28).

1) Looks like Dusty Baker will be the Astros’ new manager, an excellent move by them. He’s made the playoffs nine times in 22 years as a major league manager.

Thursday’s 6-pack
— Cubs’ 3B Kris Bryant lost his grievance, won’t be a free agent until after the 2021 season.
— Pacers 115, Bulls 106 OT— Oladipo scored 9 points in his season debut.
— Spurs 127, Jazz 120— Four San Antonio subs scored in double figures.
— Trailblazers 125, Rockets 112— Damian Lillard had his first triple-double.
— Free-agent reliever David Phelps signed a deal with the Brewers.
— Giants signed 3B Pablo Sandoval to a $2M deal with $750K in incentives.

Quote of the Day:
“When something goes wrong, who takes responsibility? Their answer: `Well, that’s what the data told us.’ What a crock. That’s what got ’em 1-31.”
Former Packers GM Ron Wolf, after the Cleveland Browns fired his son this week

Thursday’s quiz
Which college’s sports teams are known as the Chippewas?

Wednesday’s quiz
Super Bowl V was the first one with a single digit pointspread; Colts (+2.5) beat Dallas 16-13. Super Bowls III and IV were both won by double digit underdogs.

Tuesday’s quiz
Hank Aaron/Eddie Mathews combined to hit 863 home runs while teammates with the Braves.

***********************************************************************************

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

13) Marquette 84, Xavier 82, 2OT:
— Marquette star Howard (nose) missed the last 22:00 of game.
— Xavier lost in double OT; they were 11-25 on foul line. At home.
— Oddly, Xavier made 11-23 3-pointers.
— Marquette’s Sacar Anim scored a career-high 28 points.

12) George Washington 107, Davidson 104, 4OT’s
— Ten players scored in double figures.
— Three kids on GW played 59:00, 57:00, 56:00
— Two kids on Davidson played 58:00, 57:00.
— In a 60:00 game, there was a total of only 16 turnovers.

12) Seton Hall 64, DePaul 57— Blue Demons were 12-1 on Christmas and looked great; now they’re 1-7 in Big East and looking pretty much the same as they do every year.

11) Three of five games in the Atlantic 14 Wednesday went to OT.

10) Memphis 59, UCF 57— Tigers had lost four of their last six games; they really needed this road win.

9) Houston 69, East Carolina 59— Cougars are experience team #290, but Kelvin Sampson is one of the best coaches in the country. Houston is 17-4, 7-1 in the AAC.

8) Washington State 67, Arizona State 65— Last game of the night had some terrible free throw shooting down stretch; CJ Elleby scored a career-high 27 points, hitting game-winning 3-pointer with 0:05.4 left. Coogs are 4-5 in Pac-12; last time they finished .500 in Pac-12 was 2011.

7) Upsets:
— Mercer (+15) 71, East Tennessee State 55
— Lafayette (+9) 80, Colgate 78
— South Carolina (+7) 79, Arkansas 77
— Incarnate Word (+7) 84, Houston Baptist 82
— Texas (+5) 62, TCU 61
— South Dakota State (+4.5) 76, Oral Roberts 61

6) Texas Tech 89, West Virginia 81— Mountaineers lose in Lubbock for 4th year in a row.

5) Penn State 64, Indiana 49— Nevada and Indiana should trade coaches; Steve Alford could go home and be Indiana’s coach. Archie Miller would probably feel more welcomed in Reno.

4) Colorado State 92, Nevada 91— Speaking of Alford, his Wolf Pack.led by by 10 with 7:17 left but let one get away in Fort Collins, despite going 14-29 on arc. Rams outscored Nevada 23-7 on foul line; they’ve won six of their last seven games.

3) San Diego State 85, New Mexico 57— Lobos’ season is a train wreck; they’ve got three guys either suspended/thrown off team, and a 4th player has been hurt for four games. Aztecs led this game 20-2 before the second TV timeout.

What do I mean by train wreck? While the Lobos were in Reno over the weekend, an injured player rented an Air BnB in Albuquerque and threw a party, where two people were injured by gunfire.

Not good.

2) As it stands right now, ACC would be a 3-bid league for NCAA’s (Louisville, Duke, Florida State); NC State, Syracuse, Virginia are squarely on the bubble.

1) Rhode Island has won seven games in a row, is 15-5, 7-1 in A-14, and they’ve played schedule #65. Surprising team; good coaching job being done by David Cox- they host VCU Friday.
