U.S. women begin Rio Games with record-setting win over Senegal.

CpRWgkeVYAEVzXw.jpg

In pursuit of their sixth straight Olympic gold medal, the United States proved once again they are the team to beat in the women’s basketball tournament.
It was only the first game for the U.S. women’s basketball team and they’re already breaking their own Olympic records. With the devastating 121-56 win, the U.S. broke their own record for most points scored in the Olympics. The previous record was 114, set in 1992 and tied at the London Olympics.

Diana Taurasi set the tone early, hitting four threes in the first seven minutes against Senegal, en route to a record-breaking six three-pointers in the game. Taurasi’s 12 points in the quarter outpaced the Senegalese team, who had 5 points at the end of the first.
She nailed a fifth three in the third; tying her own U.S. Olympic record for most triples in a game.

The United States held a commanding 64-21 lead going into the main break with every USA player but Sue Bird notching points. Not one to be left out of the offensive festivities, Bird had already dished out seven assists going into half.
The game was all but decided as the teams retook the floor in the third, but the U.S. would not coast the rest of the way. They continued to assert their supremacy, outscoring Senegal 57-35 the rest of the way.

In their Olympic debuts, Brittney Griner and Elena Delle Donne each made an impact. Griner had 14 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks, while Delle Donne added 11 points, 6 assists and 2 steals of her own.
Breanna Stewart, having just finished her collegiate career at the University of Connecticut playing for Team USA coach Geno Auriemma, also made her first Olympic appearance. Stewart got it going early and had 10 points at halftime.

She finished with 15 points, tied with Taurasi and Sylvia Fowles for the game-high.
The U.S. defense smothered Senegal all game long, forcing Senegal into BLANK turnovers. Maya Moore was especially ferocious for the Red, White and Blue, nabbing three steals to add to her 9 points and 4 rebounds.

When the final horn sounded every player on the U.S. had scored and seven had tallied double digits, as the U.S. won by the largest margin of victory in their Olympic history.

The United States play Spain at 11:00 am ET on Monday.

U.S. women's rugby ties with top-seeded Australia.

CpRbYzKUEAAvkE6.jpg

The U.S. women's rugby team tied with top-seeded Australia, 12-12, on Sunday. Both teams finished high enough in Pool A to advance to the quarterfinals.
Australia went into halftime leading 5-0, despite losing Ellia Green, who is considered the fastest woman in rugby, when she was injured by a high hit about 30 seconds into the match. She did not return to the match.

Jessica Javelet gave the U.S. all of its offense, using her speed to score back-to-back tries midway through the second half. But in extra time, Australia scored a try and a conversion to tie score and prevent the upset.
This is the inaugural Olympic women's rugby sevens tournament. The sport was last played at the Olympics in 1924, when the men played the 15-a-side version of the sport.

After breaking leg, French gymnast Samir Ait Said looks towards 2020.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Injured French gymnast Samir Ait Said is back on his feet. Sort of.
A day after gruesomely breaking his leg while vaulting during men's Olympic preliminaries, Said posted a Facebook video from his hospital bed thanking people for the outpouring of support and pledging to return to the sport eventually.

Said underwent surgery on Saturday night to repair the tibea he fractured while trying to land on vault. The image of his leg bent grotesquely at a nearly 90 degree angle went viral immediately. Said praised his French teammates, some of whom managed to qualify for event finals later this week despite being visibly rattled after watching Said leave the Rio Olympic Arena on a stretcher.
"I'm behind all my pals," Said said.

"They managed to keep their act together after my fall. That must have been really difficult. They were real warriors. So come on boys, be strong, I'm with you."
Said plans to return to the arena as a spectator and has not ruled out making a run at the 2020 games in Tokyo.
"Believe me the adventure of Tokyo 2020 is still possible," he said. "And as soon as I'm back on my feet I'll be back in training and searching for that Olympic gold."

You too. Will be in and out today, errands to run stuff to get done. Really appreciate the thread, this is better than TV to stay apprised of happenings, better than Twitter, Facebook and any other cuz its more focused, less cluttered....

Vietnam won their first ever Gold Medal yesterday, in Air Pistol. Same event, I believe, that on the Women's side, 19 year old Ginny Thrasher brought home USA's first Gold
