This from Jim Matheson's Hockey World column which btw is always a good Sunday read.

New Year's in New York

Take this to the bank: the next outdoor game on New Year's Day 2010 will be at the brand new Yankee Stadium with the New York Rangers on the bill.

If the league's smart, they will get Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals as the other headliners. It might be an idea for NBC and the curious audience in the U.S. to lobby for the game's most exciting player, don't you think?

"You never see him on Versus (U.S. once a week) or not very often on Hockey Night in Canada. That's unfortunate," said Dallas Stars' Mike Modano, who's a big fan.

Boston might get a shot in 2012 when Fenway Park is 100 years old.

"The Green Monster out in left field and people hanging over the edge. That would be cool," said Modano.

No Canadian team in the classic ? Will never happen.

Here's a deal. We give you your all amerian classic, you give us back a franchise, so we can have two teams in Ontario (ala New York Style)

God knows we can support it.

Another pundit's vote at Fenway for their centennial and one for Vancouver in 2010:

From Kevin Paul Dupont's weekly hockey column.
http://www.boston.com/sports/hockey/articles/2009/01/04/outside_shot_of_success/?page=1

Meanwhile, the betting here is that the Winter Classic will be a go for Jan. 1, 2010, setting the stage for the Olympic Games only a little more than a month later in Vancouver. Not a bad way for NBC to whet fan appetite for Olympus, which again will have NHLers going for the gold. Great synergy there.

Vancouver could be the ideal host city for the Winter Classic 2010, and it probably would be prudent (read: politically correct) for Bettman & Bros. to bring their outdoor game back to Canada. The first one, in November 2003, had Montreal in Edmonton to face the Oilers, and some folks in the crowd that day just last week were able to break the icicles off of their noses and ears. In a word, numbing.

Boston, you ask? Its time will come, and sooner rather than later, what with Spoked-B owner Jeremy Jacobs the league's Chairman of the Board (yes, reason No. 8,673,264 why it's good to be king). Pencil in Jan. 1, 2011, or better yet, 2012, the year Fenway Park turns 100 years old. The Winter Classic would be the icing on Fenway's birthday cake.

The teachers union in Ontario won't EVER allow that. I think because of that you guys are screwed from getting another chance at another big league club. I don't believe any other area in Canada can support one.

guys - the flyers brass is making a huge push to get this game next year and talk is that it will be played at citizens bank park.

ed snider is extremely well respected by top management, and i would not be shocked to see him get it, hes been around the league a long time and dont alot for the game.

clearly if the flyers get it, the obvious choice would be the in state rival game, flyers vs pens.

zero chance of the Penguins getting another game in just 2 years time.

Just had Pittsburgh in Europe to start this season as well. To be honest they aren't one of the more entertaining teams to watch anymore, their stock is falling faster than the Dow Jones, and Crosby's box office attraction isn't exactly top drawer any more.

Maybe the Caps would be a better choice for Philly. Especially after they beat the Flyers in the playoffs! (sorry...always like to push your buttons).
