RACE #5 - BELMONT PARK - 1:54 PM EASTERN POPST

The Ogden Phipps Stakes

8½ FURLONGS DIRT GRADE I FILLIES AND MARES FOUR YEARS OLD AND UPWARD STAKES $1,000,000.00 PURSE

#4 UNTAPABLE
#2 WEDDING TOAST
#1 ROSALIND
#5 PRINCESS VIOLET

Well folks ... The renamed Ogden Phipps Handicap was run for the first time on Saturday, June 22, 2002. Phipps was a well-known philanthropist, sportsman, thoroughbred owner and breeder, and the former chairman of the family-owned Bessemer Securities Corporation. He was a member and past chairman of The Jockey Club and a trustee emeritus of the New York Racing Association. He was actively involved with Thoroughbred racing for approximately 70 years and campaigned homebred stakes winners such as Buckpasser, Easy Goer and the undefeated Personal Ensign. He passed away at age 93 on April 22, 2002, after a short illness. This race was previously run 33 times as the Hempstead Handicap (1961-2001). Here in the 47 running of the Hempsted/Phipps, #4 UNTAPABLE has won an impressive 8 of 12 in her career to date racing at, or about, today's distance of 8½ furlongs on the dirt, and has hit the board in "POWER RUN FASHION" in four straight, including a trio of "POWER RUN WINS" being embedded in this recent streak of racing consistency. Jockey John Velazquez has been in his irons on 3 previous occasions, hitting the board in each, winning twice, and is back this afternoon for his 4th ride, gunning for a "Hat Trick Win."

Concrete Jungle where dreams are made of. Pharoah in the Belmont
by Chris Krummick

I will be sitting out the opening 5 races as too many odds on favorites look good, and the alternatives nothing sticks out at price. Nothing against the races as they have great horses in them but i’m firing late. The back half of the card is very strong and I will cover races 6-11 Belmont Park Saturday.

Race 6

8. V E Day 6/1 – I will never forget this one emerging on the scene in a big way last year at Saratoga and it was also last win for this one. There were notable closers in the field including 2nd in the Derby Commanding Curve. No one made up ground that day off blistering fractions except for V E Day. Wicked Strong took over at head of stretch and looked as if he would run to daylights. Noses split the pair and it was a 19/1 Grade 1 shocker. It was the race of his life that day and I think we see even a new career top as he will try 1 1/2 for the first time. Tune up last start coming off the 6 month bench 3 furlongs shorter then he will travel today and on turf. Jerkens 31% 2nd off the layoff in 45 starts and 32% turf to dirt. I have always been fan of this one and think the extra distance slams this one right between the eyes. Only question I have is will the pace be quick enough Drawing off late

2. Red Rifle 4/1 – Appears to be the quickest of this bunch and is a must use when he can hold the field over a drum if he’s at 6 furlongs in 1:13. Last win was a gutsy effort in the Hawthorne gold cup at 1 1/4 and defeated a few of these in here. Took them wire to wire and did it in race horse time wasn’t just walking up front, was pressured, and then widened under the line. Has 3 races back this year and his last was superb. Was pressured down the backside by 3/5 Wicked Strong put that one away into the turn and Effinex swung 3 wide looking like he was gonna win by 5. Red Rifle dug in and actually put head back in front deep stretch to give way beaten less than 1 length. Has raced this distance twice on the turf with a win and a 2nd. Has 4 solid works out of that last effort all a week apart and should be primed to fire. The one to catch ———————- Races Friday instead Scratched from here

3. Call Me George 20/1- Comes out of the same Hawthorne Gold Cup race as the above and was a fast closing 3rd in that race. Has a win already this year over a few of these and if you go back and watch the New Orleans Handicap says this horse was 5th 6L back.. Chart Caller doesn’t do him any justice. Looks as if Jimmy Graham fell asleep on him shuffled to basically last as there was 3 horses across perhaps he was head in front of those 2 lets just call it last. Exploded in the stretch to run down some nice horses. Graham sticks around for 4th straight ride and has a try at this distance 4th place finish while having very wide trip. His sire Point Given won the Belmont stakes at this distance. Live Longshot

Race 7

7. Condo Commando 4/1- Speed Speed and more Speed from this one. Was bet 4/1 in the Kentucky Oaks and was done in by 47.1 quick 1/2 mile. She has 5 wins from 7 starts lifetime and has made more than any other filly in the race 758K. Her speed should be more effective getting away from the demanding two turn 1 1/8 distance and this field didn’t come up as strong as last. Has a bullet work last week 5 furlongs 59.1 Sitting on a big race Speed and Class 2nd Best Bet

12. Danzatrice 15/1- Lightly raced filly hasn’t done anything wrong, second a head from being undefeated in 4 starts. Takes a huge step up in class today but has a high cruising speed and should be able to track the top pick’s every move. Trevor McCarthy is 2 for 2 on the horse and rides early pace types very well from what I have noticed. Bullet work last week at Parx 47.4 I think Condo Commando is best horse in the race, but I will spend a few bucks with this one on top to find out how high the ceiling actually is. Class Test

Race 8

2. Sandiva 12/1 – Looks to sit a nice spot saving ground behind the pace setters in here. Has recently won her first graded stake in America and has faced some stiff competition in England. She was a L off of Euro Charline last year at Ascot that one came to Arlington and won Grade 1 there. So while this one doesn’t have the flashy win as a few of them have. Todd Pletcher has 12 wins from 16 starters last 2 weeks. 20 % Turf starts from 986 and 21 % graded stake wins from 732 starters. Mike Smith on board shooting up the rail late. Top Pick

4. Coffee Clique 7/2- Is the defending champ of this Just A Game G1 for fillies and mares and on the same route 2 races under the belt and fully cranked to roll 3rd off the shelf. Brian Lynch is 23% from 66 starters and fired a bullet 48 4 furlongs over this turf course last Saturday and should run another big race in here sitting just off the leader Discreet Marq. I feel that the pace isn’t going to be that quick and you need a horse forwardly places with a quick turn of foot in stretch to hold off some talented closers. I love her Sire Medaglia d’oro the horses are performing terrific all over the world on turf. Must Use

7. J wonder 10/1- Has now been stateside for two starts and last out had an adventure. Stumbled at the start breaking from post 1, then latched on to the bit and rushed up into 2nd. Castellano had his feet high up in the dashboard choking this one down fought him through the 1st half mile of the race. Discreet Marq set a slow pace that day and sprinted away in the stretch. J Wonder was beaten slightly over a L for all the marbles nose bob for 3rd. Lezcano gets the mount today and that last trip certainly cost him and he was 4/1 that day. I will bite at 10/1 positioned outside today can only help. Upside

Race 9

1. Private Zone 4/1 – Is a horse I love to root for Good Friends stable is made up of A few guys from Chicago and headed by Former jockey Rene Douglas who was paralyzed in tragic accident in 2010 at Arlington Park. Multiple graded stake winner 3 Grade 1s and is the fastest horse in the race and has drawn the rail. Shows up with his race every time he steps on the track 27 starts 8 wins 66% ITM Look for him to be in charge from the word go, will face pressure however from a few. Tepid selection in wide open race

5. Tamarkuz 10/1- The Dubai import who is not shy from the winner circle 7 wins from 13 starts has been working very well since arriving to Belmont working in company with Belmont contender Frosted. Irad Ortiz jr is one of the top jocks in New York that goes under the radar. 8 wins from 28 starts last 7 days. When he teams up with trainer Kiaran Mcglaughlin 12 starts 42 % win. Mcglaughlin also knows how to get one ready first time U.S.A 38% from 16 starts. Has 4 straight wins and can be very dangerous I don’t let this type beat me

4. Tonalist 5/2- Last year in the Belmont stakes foiled California Chromes bid at the triple crown. 4 starts at Belmont 4 wins and the last race off 6 month layoff cutting back to this mile distance was to me the best of his life winning the grade 3 Winchester. Adds a sharp John Velazquez, settles near the back of a quick pace and unleashes that long stride in the stretch. This is a deep field you may want to use as many as you can afford to stay alive in pk4. I will play backup but roll these 3 strong on main ticket. Horse for Course

Race 10

7. Slumber 15/1- Took the scenic route on Derby day was 3 wide down the backside floated 5 wide into far turn where the winner crossed in front forcing this one to jump over heels. Finished 5th only beaten 2L. Now stretches out an extra furlong adds blinkers to inject a little more early speed into him for Chad Brown who is 22% from 50 starts 1st time blinkers and is 29% overall this year from 283 starts. At this 1 1/4 distance has 3 wins from 7 starts only missing the board one time. Irad Ortiz stays aboard for the 2nd time and is 32% from 37 starts teaming up with Chad Brown. I love everything I have seen out of the last 3 replays I watched back and will make this one my Best Bet of the Day to Blow up the TOTE BOARD.

This will be my single but I will also include 2 Twilight Eclipse 7/2 and 4 War Dancer 5/1 and 5 Big Blue Kitten 5/1 in exactas and pk4

Race 11

1. Mubtaahij 10/1 Irad Ortiz Jr – Was my top pick in the Kentucky Derby and was bounced around pretty good entering first turn before his jockey finally gave up the position he was in and checked out. Sort of ran evenly rest of the race, but with the slow pace and the leaders playing Merry Go Round the race isn’t as bad as it looks. I have said all along this is the one horse who will run through a wall is bred to conquer this 1 1/2 distance and has been working almost every 3 days since arriving to Belmont May 17th. Gets a huge jockey upgrade to Ortiz who really knows this Belmont track. He has now been in the U.S. for over 7 weeks and should be much fitter to pick off the leaders late. Belmont Winner

2. Tale Of Verve 15/1 Gary Stevens- finished 2nd in the Preakness when half the field was stuck in the slop and the other 2 challenged Pharoah for the win and were looking for the barn after a mile. 2nd by default just broke maiden 2 months ago and just looks like and underneath type picking off the horse who try for the win again. Can hit the board

3. MadeFromLucky 12/1 Javier Castellano – won the Belmont prep the Peter Pan making sharp move around far turn and won like a good thing. That was the 1 1/8 distance but has been a race that has produced the latest Belmont winner Tonalist. That being said I don’t see this horse progressing at the further distance and certainly not enough to turn the tables on American Pharoah who has beaten him twice in Arkansas by open lengths Not for me

4. Frammento 30/1 Mike Smith – trainer Nick Zito isn’t a stranger to blowing up the Belmont at a big price but this one just looks too slow to make any serious damage to the upper tier of contenders. Fighting with Tale of a Verve for 4th

5. American Pharoah 3/5 Victor Espinoza- Bids to put his name in all time stardom with one more victory. Bob Baffert now tries for his 4th Victor for his 3rd and you think eventually it has to happen. I questioned him a bit in the Derby the pace was slow he was wide but in the end he was the best. I knew all along he would win the Preakness and he didn’t disappoint, but Firing Line was 5/2 and beaten 45 Lengths so the track really played to the Pharoahs favor. This will now be his 5th race in 10 weeks and will now have to carry his speed 2 furlongs further he has ever traveled in his life. He has held his condition very well and has been moving like a winner. In the Preakness Diving Rod made a huge move to Pharoah on far turn just couldn’t sustain the bid. Someone will make that big move in this race and roll right on by the runner up. 90,000 people gasp

6. Frosted 5/1 Joel Rosario- Was my 2nd choice in the Kentucky Derby and was 14th early while wide down backstretch swung out 5 wide through turn and was really gaining ground late to finish 4th only beaten 3 Lengths when it was all said and done. The race before the Derby was his coming out party in the Wood where he was tremendous off a minor throat procedure. I think this horse has Superstar in his future is a fresh horse a bullet 3 works back and 2 maintenance works leading up to this Mcglaughlin seems to be calling all the right shots with this one. I am using this one on the same level as Mubtaahij and strongly feel the race winner comes from one of these. I went to the wedding this may be the funeral!

7. Keen Ice 20/1 Kent Desormeaux – Was as far back as could be in the Derby picked off some tired ones late finishing 7th. Desormeaux stays aboard and will be looking to play spoiler late in the race, but not for me. Use in Super if you play

8. Materiality 6/1 John Velazquez- Was expected to be a speed presence in the Derby and had a slow start was shuffled to last down backstretch and was really making up ground late in the race to finish 7th but was moving quickly. I feel he has to show pace in here especially with Pletcher having 2 he can’t hold both bullets in the gun trying to get a loping along American Pharoah His sire Afleet Alex was tremendous in his Belmont stake and he should stay the distance. I am looking to beat this horse though in all spots as he will be a solid 3rd choice Off my ticket

Will ‘Pharoah’ win the Triple Crown? The Post’s predictions

Vic Cangialosi

Frosted: This year’s Triple Crown villain. McLaughlin thinks he’s sitting on a big one and I agree. If Rosario can keep the front-runners in sight, the gray colt will be hard to hold off.

Materiality: May hook up with Pharoah right from the gate. Had to alter his style in the Derby when he missed the break. Three-for-three with the returning Johnny V. Fresh. Speed may undermine American Pharoah.

Madefromlucky: Tonalist won last year’s Peter Pan and went on to defeat California Chrome in the final jewel. Pletcher steers this Lookin at Lucky colt down the same path.

Debbie Little

American Pharoah: Victor Espinoza has been here twice before. The third time should be the charm, and he and Bob Baffert will win the Triple Crown.

Frosted: Joel Rosario won last year’s Belmont, smashing the Triple Crown dream of California Chrome. If the favorite falters, the gray wins the day.

Materiality: The all-time leading money-earning jockey John Velazquez is always dangerous. Has enough speed to hit the board.

Hondo

Materiality: Well rested from sitting out the Preakness, Johnny V. keeps him relevant all the way to the winner’s circle.

American Pharoah: Bad news for those attempting to triple down on the favorite. The Phary tale comes up a length short of a happy ending.

Mubtaahij: Here’s the rub on “Mub” — a former Post handicapper with some weighty credentials likes him to win, which is enough to scare off Hondo.

John Sutton

American Pharoah: He won’t be on the wrong side of history. He looks strong, has the speed needed and this one just feels different.

Materiality: An improving horse who likely will press Pharoah for the early lead. Finished strong in the Derby to get sixth.

Mubtaahij: The distance shouldn’t be a problem for this world traveler, who will keep plodding his way onto the board.

Have made case all week that Untapable is vulnerable having not yet improved an iota from her 3yo Championship form and challenged here in what looks like a chess match between her, Princess Violet and Wedding Toast. McLaughlin barn sending out one dynamo after another and will be interesting to see when Wedding Toast moves on her two main rivals. Princess Violet did win the Empire Distaff at this trip in the fall, but she’s not facing Flipcup and Carameaway. Rosalind and Rosario will get to save ground and watch the action unfold, while Alvarado (House Rules) and Maragh (Shayjolie) have options as to how close they sit. Just 6 but hardly clear cut..

Most Likely: #2 Wedding Toast 4-1
Next Best: #4 Untapable 2-5
Best Value: #5 Princess Violet 8-1

7th: 85th Acorn (G1), 3yo-F, 1m (G/S, P3, DD)

Not to take away from accomplishments of 8-for-8 Promise Me Silver, but not sure anyone has noticed that she’s isn’t the only undefeated filly in race with Bar of Gold and Miss Ella equally pristine. Nine of these 12 are shortening up from longer routes or 2-turn miles, which curiously leaves the aforementioned troika making slight stretchouts from 7f in their respective previous starts. Thoroughly spectacular running of this always salubrious standard..

Best Value: #5 Bar of Gold 20-1
Next Best: #11 Miss Ella 6-1
Exotics Use: #6 Curalina 10-1
Super Add: #9 Promise Me Silver 5-1

8th: 22nd Just a Game (G1), F&M-4+, 1m-T (P4, P3, DD)

Steady, surprising rain this morning throws screwball into this event as turf — which was just ‘good’ as recently as Thursday — may be plenty yielding by this afternoon. Castellano sticks with ‘one to beat’ Ball Dancing but no shortage of accomplished dowagers to utilize against/with them..

Most Likely: #4 Coffee Clique 7-2
Next Best: #8 Ball Dancing 3-1
Best Value: #2 Sandiva 12-1
Exotics Use: #7 J Wonder 10-1

9th: 122nd Metropolitan H. (G1), 3+, 1m (P3, DD)

Tremendous assembly for one of the sport’s most important races and while top half of field (4-5-6-7-9) offer the likely winner, other quintet are doorknobs. ’14 Jim Dandy exacta of Wicked Strong-Tonalist feel like the heaviest of the heavyweights and both come in off series of eye-popping drills. Fact that Shug and Baffert redirected Honor Code and Bayern here encourages for their chances from opposite running styles. The mystery horse is Tamarkuz (10-1) who is guaranteed to offer value and has taken to his U.S. environs to the extent that he has successfully sparred with Frosted preparing for today. Pace will be spirited if not downright hot and whoever is good enough on the day prevails..

Most Likely: #6 Wicked Strong 6-1
Next Best: #4 Tonalist 5-2
Best Value: #5 Tamarkuz 10-1
Exotics Use: #7 Bayern 7-2
Super Add: #9 Honor Code 6-1

10th: 114th Manhattan (G1), 4+, 10f-IT (P4, P3, DD)

Not usually overly concerned with weights, but Twilight Eclipse (+7), Finnegans Wake and Jack Milton notably challenged by the scale here. Pletcher has recently converted Feathered into an adept lawn gnome and will try same with General a Rod who removes hood but may still find himself isolated on the lead at a giant number. War Dancer, Big Blue Kitten and Slumber all have looks and Euro invader Magic Artist is an unknown..

Most Likely: #5 Big Blue Kitten 5-1
Next Best: #4 War Dancer 5-1
Best Value: #10 General a Rod 20-1
Exotics Use: #2 Twilight Eclipse 7-2

11th: 147th Belmont Stakes (G1), 3yo, 12f (P3, DD)

Back again for another pass at the most elusive of achievements.. I may be a bad judge of Crown chance Belmonts as I always am eager to see the candidate convert the opportunity and don’t covet this particular ‘bet-against’. Beyond the obvious elements of rock solid credentials of American Pharoah and an encouraging pace scenario for the assignment, I’m more confident than usual about a Classic sweep by him based on the admiration he’s engendered from veteran horsemen. Askthebookie When David Vance, Lynn Whiting and Carl Nafzger, independent observers of horseflesh with a lifetime in the game, gush about a horse and his chances at this increasing implausible task, it’s high praise.

American Pharoah and Victor Espinoza will have to get themselves into the winner’s circle of course, but there’s nothing pending that makes him particularly less likely to succeed today than in Arkansas, Kentucky or Maryland. Frosted is the most well-rounded of his foes, while Materiality makes up in raw talent what he lacks in seasoning. Keen Ice, Madefromlucky, Tale of Verve, Mubtaahij and Frammento all have admirable enough qualities that make them deserving parts of the field and are no less appropriate participants than Sarava, Da’ Tara, Commendable, Ruler on Ice, et al..

Experience says those hoping to witness a touchstone historical event will go home disappointed; The very essence of involvement in this sport says you’re going to see something special that you’ll never forget..

Most Likely: #5 American Pharoah 3-5

Best Value: #2 Tale of Verve 15-1

Next Best: #7 Keen Ice 20-1

Exotics Use: #6 Frosted 5-1

#5 Big Blue Kitten (5-1)
#2 Twilight Eclipse (7-2)
#10 General A Rod (20-1)

R11 – G1 Belmont Stakes

#1 Mubtaahij (Ire) (10-1) – Has the right grinding style to be successful in this race and he sure has gotten familiar with this surface the last 5 weeks.

#2 Tale of Verve (15-1) – Picked up the pieces after American Pharoah gutted the field in the Preakness. Expecting an off the board finish.

#3 Madefromlucky (12-1) – He continues progressing and that local win 4 weeks ago help the cause.

#4 Frammento (20-1) – Yes he’s bred for this distance, but he probably should be in a Alw N1X race.

#5 American Pharoah (3-5) – Attempting history and it’s going to take an outstanding effort to beat him. All systems go.

#6 Frosted (5-1) – Benefits from skipping the Preakness and will be lurking late if the top 2 choices start breathing fire.

#7 Keen Ice (20-1) – Another one that is eligible for Alw N1X company and his optimal performance make just get him a minor slice.

#8 Materiality (6-1) – Draws perfectly and Johnny V will have options. I can’t see him letting American Pharoah be loose on the lead. It seems like they will throw it down and sees who’s best.

Selections:

#5 American Pharoah (3-5)

#8 Materiality (6-1)

#6 Frosted (5-1)

#1 Mubtaahij (10-1)

#3 Madefromlucky (12-1)

PK6 – 1 2 8 9 / 6 7 / 10 / 4 10 / 3 5 / 5 8 = $128

PK4 – 3 4 6 8 10 / 4 6 10 / 2 3 5 10 / 5 8 = $60 for $.50

R12 – OC 62k/N2X (Turf 9F)

#4 Town Extension (20-1)
#11 Umgiyo (Aus) (9-5)
#7 Taghleeb (4-1)
#12 Market Outlook (6-1)

R13 – OC 62k/N2X

#3 Chipit (5-1)
#10 Social Inclusion (3-1)
#8 Big Looie (12-1)
#11 Matterhorn (4-1)

Need to know ‘Weather Update’ for Belmont Stakes
Stephen Campbell

The 2015 edition of the Preakness Stakes will be remembered its influx of inclement weather, but horse racing bettors will be glad to hear that’s not the case for the Belmont on Saturday.

The forecast is calling for temperatures to be in the low 70s with mostly sunny skies towards the afternoon and evening in the New York City area. Northern winds between 10-15 mph are expected at race time.

Fresh off wins in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, American Pharoah is seeking to claim the first Triple Crown since 1978. Sports Interaction has pegged the horse as a -150 favorite to do so.

can't believe some of these services actually.make people pay to give out the top 2 betting favorites. Of course anyone could pick American Pharoah to win this race without paying some guy to pick it for them. You need to pick value for your money when it comes to horse racing. When it comes to the Belmont anything can happen and deep closers are what you need to look for and not front runners. Keen ice and frammento do not look great at first glance but value wise those are the two you should be betting in exotics. If it comes 5,6,8 then you make about 20 bucks on a tri. You want to take the value with the longer odds and if everything plays out rright then you will be making thousands instead and twenty to thirty bucks

You said it ProCapp....... A race like this with a huge favorite & an 8 horse field it very hard to make money if that horse comes in 1st or 2nd...... Unless of course the bettor is in a position to bet $50 to $100 exaxtas.....

As for the services, they should be shut down for offering a 5-6-8 pick on this race...... but then again as you can see people still pay from them.... so I guess we are the dummies for not opening up a service......
