Sometimes my computer goes really slow, I press CTR+ALT+DEL and it shows me 100% CPU Usage.

This only happens sometimes, but it's really weird cause I could have eight tabs going at once and everything works fluidly, then have nothing going and it starts stalling bad.

The 100% CPU Usage usually lasts about 2-3 minutes, during this time everything works extremely slow, it's basically stuck.

I've checked all my processes and I have nothing unusual going on.

any idea what causes this?

lack of ram. unnecessary programs running in the background. cmd prompt - msconfig

anti-virus on in the background scanning.

lack of a restart over long periods of time.

when you do the cntrl-alt-del you should be able to sort by most ram used at the time, by clicking on the top of the tab -- the item with the most could be your culprit.

Go into the processes tab in task manager & click on the CPU column heading & it will sort by cpu usage. It should be plain as day what is causing the problem.

Is there any normal range for what IEXPLORE.EXE and explorer.exe should be running at (e.g. 10,000, 20,000, 40,000, etc.)? thanks.

Not really. IE 7 is more resource intensive, and multiple tabs only make it worse. Using 100-200mb of RAM is not uncommon. Just another reason to reboot every once in a while.

Thats thing sir, Nothing looks unnormal. I know about each process and what it does. It's really a mystery cause the computer lags for 2 minute intervals and it doesn't always happen.

It happens more often when I play music on WMP or watch Videos on Youtube.

What do you mean by reboot TT?

Like when my computer starts lagging I should just restart?

could look at increasing your paging file as well, depending on how much ram you have.

Not much sir.

448RAM 37.2 GB

Moved from Cable to DSL about 4 months ago, but this stalling has really been noticeable for only a month or so.

Never had this problem with Cable.

I've had this computer for over 4 years.

Add 1gb of RAM. Won't cost that much & should do miracles-especially if you're running Win XP.

Can you add Ram to a laptop?

Yes, you can and it's not that hard.

Are you using IE7? If so, you should try Mozilla. IE uses alot of system resources when you have multiple tabs open. Mozilla doesn't have this problem.

Yeah, it will just cost you a bit more. Also, you may have to replace the existing 1/2 gig with the 1 gig chip. Ideally, you add it to the existing one, but it's not the end of the world. 1gb will be a BIG improvement.

CPU Usage was 100% at the time when svchost.exe was at 80k

Right now svchost is at 23k and CPU usage is fluctuating between 3% and 12%
