Henderson was the best at cutting the ball off down the line PERIOD...

All I remember Yaz doing was choking...

Can't argue with that logic, first Yaz is gay, now he is a choke artist.

Ok - we don't need to to serious here. Just look at the numbers:

Ricky - Games 3058, Total Chances 6,742, assists 133, errors 141, Fielding % .979.

Yaz - Games 3285, chances 11,347, assists 775, errors 135, Fielding % .988. (includes a lot of 1st base).

Atleast take out his 1st base stats...775 assists? His stats are not broken down by position...no outfielder has that many assists...that comparison isn`t accurate

I can't find any way to separate the stats. Regardless, look at the number of chances compared to errors. Gold gloves 7 to 0. What else to you need?

JMAN-

I respect a person who knows baseball like you do and has a passion for the sport.

Having said that, I agree with you you, Ricky was very very good at cutting balls off down the line and even with his terrible arm was able to keep many baserunners from advancing maybe better than anybody.

However, YAZ was probably equally as good as Ricky at this too through his positioning, quick jumps, more than adaquate speed, and excellent throwing arm.....and a given day, either one may have been better.

However, YAZ was SUPERIOR in EVERY other phase of his defensive play compared to Rickey.......very very seldom did Yaz misjudge a fly ball, throw to the wrong base, not get a good a great jump on the ball, and his ability to charge a groundball was unmatched as a leftfielder.

YAZ was a trully gifted leftfielder in every aspect.......and like you mentioned earlier, I didnt even mention the way he played the monstor to perfection back in the old days when it had all kinds of different bounces.

YAZ was a joy to watch play outfield and every kid in America should watch films of how he played defensively.

"What more do you need"

I already said I was wrong,lol...

But comparing those numbers is wrong too, for one Ricky has made a ton of errors in his 40`s he didn`t have 1st base to save him...

For the sake of this arguement maybe judge til both players were 35...

I started this thread saying MY Gold Glove team....I didn`t see Carl Yaz in the 60`s...

To say Rickey was a joke of a left fielder who was lazy, dropped balls, and didn`t hustle isn`t quite right though....Henderson is one of the most underappreciated players ever....

JMAN- Rickey sure is underappreciated bigtime IMO!

He is still the greatest offensive player I have EVER seen considering EVERYTHING!!.......only Bonds can compare.

C- Bench (without a doubt)
3b- Schmidt (won 10 gold gloves)
SS- Ozzie Smith
2B- Brett Boone (tough posistion)
LF- Barry Bonds (this ones easy guys)
CF- Mays (going with the chalk)
RF- Clemente (another no brainer)
P- Maddux (easiest choice of all)

nice topic jman, np argument with cather or pitcher in my opinion or left field.. schmidt had more gold gloves than brooks but i like brooks a heck of alot better. Andruw Jones is a comer in center... Kudos to Yaz and Dewey for fishhead.. Garry Maddox and Pudge, two more good ones.. 2B was a tough choice.. Morgan was the best there..

Well, we made our own list before opening the Thread, and the only difference was we had Mattingly at first and Yaz in left.

All players listed so far carried solid ONE defensive ratings in multiple seasons of Stratomatic decks.

Ricky was the best leadoff hitter and baserunner of alltime, without a doubt. Too bad his attitude wasnt better.. I liked the old guy alot better than when he was young.. One of the top 5 offensive players of all time.. cant put him ahead of Ruth or Bonds,

Guys the comparisons start and stop with Ruth on any discussion.. Look at the numbers.. I cant stand the Yankees but Ruth is in a class by himself, as a player, an icon and to baseball in general..

My vote for some of the lineup:

Catcher - Pudge Rodriguez
SS - Ozzie Smith
3B - Brooks Robinson
LF - Barry Bonds (pre-steriod)
CF - Tie between Andruw Jones, Paul Blair and Willie Mays
RF - tie between Dewey Evans and Roberto Clemente

Cant make up mind on other positions

I still say Jim Kaat with 16 straight gold gloves is the only choice at pitcher. His name is appropriate, he was like a cat on the mound, a fifth infielder if there ever was one. Better than Maddux.

Brooks won many more GG than Mike Schmidt...

The Gold Glove can be a popularity contest though, and once a players wins it, its hard for someone to come in and take it....I am sure Brooks who won something like 19 GG`s wasn`t always the best, maybe Nettles had a couple years he could have won over him....

I think Jones from ATL is as good as any outfielder ever...

Jones is very good, but overrated in my estimation.

Although only for a short time, I never enjoyed watching anybody play CF more than Andy Van Slyke.

Van Slyke was fun to watch, similar to Jim Edmonds.....

No mention of Omar Vizquel , he is right there with Ozzie...

Fish, I hope you agree OVERALL Henderson over Yaz if you had to take one for your team...Henderson is the most productive offensive player in MLB history EXCEPT for a handful of players...

RUTH
Bonds
Williams
Mays
Aaron
HENDERSON

As you said Fisherman the HR is overrated...

Yes, I would JMAN.

Like I mentioned earlier, RICKEY is the best offensive player I have ever seen in my lifetime.

RICKEY IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE ALL-TIME PLAYERS!!!

PS- Would have to put YAZ in though for late-inning defense.

Yaz was a tremendous clutch player throughout his career. He hit a blistering .455 in the 1975 ALCS and .310 in that year's World Series.

In the famous 1978 playoff game against the Yankees, he hit a home run off the nearly-unbeatable Ron Guidry.

Thus, in his 17 post-season games, the final 12 games of the 1967 season, and the 1978 one-game AL East playoff - the 30 most important games of his long career - Yaz hit .430 (49-for-114) with 10 homers, 29 RBI, and 31 runs scored. (Source: Retrosheet)
