Surprise was a nice guess though.

Yeah I have some friends on John's Island and my work has a big warehouse in Summerville.

There are a lot of nice little areas outside (but still close to) Charleston metro.

Thats even better ("ideal" SUPERB IMO) cuz John's Island has more major thoroughfares into Charleston than from Folly + to Summerville you don't have to delve into the Charleston traffic + Folly Beach from John's Island don't require too much if any real entry into that traffic to get to so thats very very good indeed.

The ONLY thing I did not like about Folly Beach was the traffic into/out of Charleston.

I was in Charleston area when the Hunley Submarine was raised. The very night before the raising I happened to meet some girls while out drinking who worked at a Hotel that had a boat that was goin' out to witness the raising so wound up an 11th Hour (literally) lucking into what I later discovered was a really really big deal. We were all in bad shape come the 5 or 6 a.m. time to set sail but were mercifully able to resume drinking on the boat. I'm certain thats the only way that I survived the excursion. National Geographic was there filming....tragic story, the mindbogglingly tiny Civil-War sub. Lost for a long long time.

All this I mention cuz one when visiting Charleston would do well to immerse themsleves completely in seeing/learning or the History that is there. Hunley is just a small portion. Visit ALL of what you can of Historic Sites. Later in Life you will be immensely glad that you did.

from-the-hunley-exhibit.jpg

The H. L. Hunley was a submarine of the Confederate States of America that played a small part in the American Civil War. The Hunley demonstrated the advantages and the dangers of undersea warfare. She was the first combat submarine to sink a warship, although the Hunley was not completely submerged and, following her successful attack, was lost along with her crew before she could return to base.

The Confederacy lost 21 crewmen in three sinkings of the Hunley during her short career. She was named for her inventor, Horace Lawson Hunley, shortly after she was taken into government service under the control of the Confederate States Army at Charleston, South Carolina.

The Hunley, nearly 40 feet (12 m) long, was built at Mobile, Alabama, and launched in July 1863. She was then shipped by rail on August 12, 1863, to Charleston, South Carolina.

The Hunley (then called Fish Boat) sank on August 29, 1863, during a test run, killing five members of her crew. She sank again on October 15, 1863, killing all eight of her second crew, including Horace Hunley himself, who was aboard at the time, even though he was not a member of the Confederate militia. Both times the Hunley was raised and returned to service.

On February 17, 1864, The Hunley attacked and sank the 1240-short ton (1124 metric tons)[SUP][2][/SUP] screw sloop USS Housatonic, which had been on Union blockade-duty in Charleston's outer harbor. Soon afterwards, the Hunley sank, killing all eight of her third crew. This time, the innovative ship was lost.
Finally located in 1995, the Hunley was raised in 2000 and is on display in North Charleston, South Carolina, at the Warren Lasch Conservation Center on the Cooper River. Examination, in 2012, of recovered Hunley artifacts suggests that the submarine was as close as 20 feet to her target, the Housatonic, when her deployed torpedo exploded, which eventually caused the sub's own loss.

It is big. But I'm not way out there by Lake Pleasant. Not remote at all. Im about 2 miles NW of the 101 freeway curve. Takes me less than 5 minutes to hop on the 101. Then the drive to the Cards Stadium is about 9 miles south on the 101 from there.

Oh, you might know Lakeside Bar, Dirty Pelican, The Heights and LW's Hide-A-Way then. I never got to go to LW's, just stumbled upon it one time really late at night/early in the morning and it looked fascinating....91st Ave + Pinnacle Peak. Stopped and walked all around the place tripping out. Like stepping back in time that place, from the outside at least.

The Moon is worth investigating over 83rd & Bell way if ya haven't already....particularly when The Padres (or even The Mariners) are playing a Cactus League game....

I know of all the restaurants/bars you mention. But never been in any.

Quick story.... My junior yr in HS I pitched in the AZ high school state playoffs at the Peoria Sports Complex. But this was BEFORE it was the home of the Padres and Mariners. At that time, it was just four baseball fields out on Bell Rd on the way to Sun City. Not much out there on Bell Road at the time. Don't believe Arrowhead Mall was even built yet.

The year was 1992.

Arrowhead opened in October 1993 on land formerly occupied by an Orange Grove.

Your baseball field and those other 3 became Peoria Sports Complex which opened February 26, 1994.

I know what you mean, there wasn't much out there then but now? There is a LOT of stuff there. :):)

FunUGuyz (Fuh-noo-geez) is a "Dark Horse" Bar Selection, 83rd & T-Bird. The Moon is a "Chicago" Bar...Bears Bar.

Lotta Bears Bars around PHX Metro.

Last 10 years I have been in Illinois, Ohio, Wisconsin, and now Alabama. I'm eyeing Charleston SC as my next stop, probably next year.
Bring it on. It's really hard to leave the hospitality of the South once you get here. I guess the lowest cost of living, low taxes, and cheapest gas in the Nation helps also...

Red Robin is probably in my top 5 worst restaurants. Burgers are mush. Just my opinion

Then again I love taco bell. To each their own I guess

Our last house was 1/4 mile from 83rd and TBird. Sold it in April to move where we are now, 83rd/Ave/Deer Valley.

Never ate at FunUGuyz. But probably ate at the Heidi's Deli that is right next to it about 30 times.

Been to Peoria Sports Complex maybe 30x since it opened to see games. I remember seeing a game in the mid 1990's. Sat on the lawn in the outfield. Randy Johnson was pitching. ARod was playing short. Think that was ARod's 1st or 2nd year....

Used to love the Wiskey River BBQ burger there. But the past couple times I have had it, it was horrible.

Red Robin was much better in the early days. Way downhill since then.

Red Robin is the most over rated and over priced Burger Joint out there.

Heck you might be able to throw a rock and hit The Heights from your house now lol. Would be a good place to consider for watching Football, prolly have a decent Breakfast Special on Sundays, Pre-Game.

I saw The Birmingham Barons with Michael Jordan at Scottsdale Stadium, Nomar Garciaparra was playing before anyone knew who he was. He had a really big nose. I asked my friend next to me if he felt it was safe for a guy to play baseball with a nose as big as this guy had then looking past my buddy I saw 3 people staring over at me with wounded looks in their eyes and the exact same noses.

Nomar's Family.

That was very awkward.

I saw Michael Jordan play in a FALL League game at Tempe Diablo Stadium. I believe he was playing for the Scottsdale Scorpions. He struck out in one at bat.

Ill have to check out THE HEIGHTS.... Its less than a half mile from my house.

Its a fun little place. Can get a bit rowdy on the late night/early a.m. Fridays & Saturdays...younger crowd, a bit wild at times but Sundays are CHILL up in there. Dirty Pelican is a lot bigger, less "Homey" than Heights, with its bigger size likely better for selection of games + seating for the game(s) you'd prefer to watch than Heights would be. I prefer the smaller more "local" type bar though....Pelican is a good "local" place too just Heights is more "intimate". Top Shelf every time I've gotten near there is always SUPER crowded, never seen anything like it really. It must be really really good. Mind you I was mainly up that way on weekend nights. I think it must be really good food though there.

Top Shelf. It's decent, but not great. Could do much worse.

Have ate there a couple times since we moved up here. The original location was actually right next to the 1st apartment my wife and I had after we were married. 35th Ave/ Greenway. Ate at that one many times back in the day. Late 90's.
