I am gonna post my musings on the WC groups.

A no. of squads did altitude training in Austria or Switzerland as there are several venues at high altitude. Australia departed early for South Africa. USA & France...nothing, though the former did arrive earlier than most. Johannesburg, Pretoria, Bloemfontein, Polowane & Rustenburg are the aforementioned sites.

Group A

1. Mexico
2. South Africa
3. France
4. Uruguay

Mexico still unsettled w/ their lineup. Franco's fitness is in question & Hernandez has been less than convincing up top. Marquez may play a holding mid role. In goal, Perez might get the start over Ochoa...not sure about than one.

Regardless, Aguirre has rejuvenated the Mexican squad in his second-go-around. Both Vela & Hernandez could have a breakout WC. There are finishing questions and set piece defending concerns but I don't think any team in this group will exploit either concerns. Needless to say, El Tri will have the majority of poss in their matches.

South Africa is in ascendance, like Mexico. Parreira, also back at the helm, has done wonders for morale and performance. I don't want to extrapolate too much from friendlies but recent results, such as victories over Paraguay & Denmark, are encouraging.

Bafana Bafana look to be a more attacking side than under fellow Brazilian Santana, now managing Botafogo in the Brasileirao. Also, unsettled on their XI as they've experimented w/ Pineaar as a second striker. There is some talent - Pineaar, Modise, Mokoena and, from what I've seen, their GK Khune. They might go w/ Mpehla up top...and he and Parker have to finish their chances.

Host country momentum....don't underestimate this aspect.

France...good lord. There seems to be a dark cloud hanging over the French MNT. The astrology infatuated Domenech is reviled in France. Talk is still lingering over the Henry handball that helped Les Bleus qualify. Team morale is low, due to a lack of cohesion as well as confidence in Domenech...and poor performance.

The talent is their for Les Bleus and it is possible for one match to begin to turn things around for them. I think Benzema , Nasri & Vieira missings will prove to hinder this club...tho many will say their destiny in South Africa has already been written.

Uruguay is the squad I am least familiar with, tho I have seen a couple of qualifiers. Critics charge them w/ inconsistency and I do agree. When you can't beat Costa Rica convincingly in final playoff qualification, well, something is amiss.

I am familiar w/ GK Muslera ( Lazio) and think he's inexperienced tho promising. Central defense w/ Lugano looks solid but we'll see if this is key area that keeps them from getting results. Forward line looks excellent.

Group B

1. Argentina
2. Korea Republic
3. Greece
4. Nigeria

Maradona will be hailed or cursed after this WC...both? He has engendered skepticism with dubious tactics and myriad lineups, but will it matter...as there is so much talent.

Indications are that Maradona will go with 3 up top, meaning Messi along with Higuain & Tevez...Katy, bar the door.

I have some questions about their back line....old, tired legs. Also, so much in centre mid will depend on Veron & Mascherano.

Korea Republic are like most East Asian sides as they will be disciplined, well-conditioned & have a high work rate. What they do possess, moreso than say Japan, physicality. They play tougher...you could say, edgier.

GK Lee is solid and the mid will revolve around Park & Lee with their Premiership pedigree. Park (AS Monaco) gives them a striker of note & should be healthy along with Lee...uh, how many Lee's are there for the Taeguk Warriors?

Greece...well, I know they will be a disciplined, defensive side, looking to counter. At least, sr. cititzen Nikopolidis in no longer 1st choice keeper. :lolBIG:Rehhagel has a good rep. as a coach. CB Moras appears out for first match.

Nigeria...uh, Mikel is not gonna play...that's all I know. Like most African sides... not very creative in the midfield or possessing stellar goalkeeping.

Group C

1. England
2. Slovenia
3. USA
4. Algeria

The Three Lions w/o Ferdinand coupled w/ Barry's expected absence, at least in the first game, & mediocrity looming in James' selection in goal has raised the possiblity that their def. will betray them. Luckily, their 3 fellow group nations aren't off. prolific.

I have some hope that Hart will be the no. 1 but it doesn't look like Capello has ever seriously considered this possibility. Capello is a fine manager but I think that this will be a mistake as Hart has played fantastic this year on loan to Birmingham
& experience be damned, win or lose w/ the best on the pitch. I found Hart to be excl and in command when he was the u-21's no. 1.

Gerrard's & Terry's lack of form in the EPL along w/ inj. to LB Cole & winger Lennon all leave a measure of doubt on this English side. I think another costly omission could be Adam Johnson.

Slovenia...not too familiar w/ this squad. I know Handanovic & Dedic but that's about it.

A defensive side, quick on the counter and a handful on set pieces. Limited in attack but efficient. They defeated Russia in qualification playoffs & that says a lot.

So given the limitations & concerns regarding the aforementioned...why pick them above the USA? Well, the Yanks have similar offensive shortcomings as Slovenia & injury questions as England.

GK Howard is excl but central def. w/ DeMerit & Goodson is shaky. Not confident in either fullback & they aren't much of a threat in advancing forward.

Too often I would notice the midfield bypassed & when they did maintain poss...not enough quality chances were created. Bradley is a solid box-to-box mid & Edu a good holding mid...but both are still young, so maybe the youthful Torres should get an opportunity. Donovan is the only true playmaker.

Fwd line...Altidore is not ready. Davies is a huge miss.

Algeria? Well, they are like many North African sides more technical than African nations, in general. There's talent in Belhadj, etc. But w/o no. 1 GK & Mansouri...there's not much hope.

Thanks for the correction.

I think I confused the Colombia friendly w/ the Paraguay match.

JOHANNESBURG - South Africa coach Carlos Alberto Parreira on Thursday named an unchanged side for Friday's World Cup opening match at Mexico at Soccer City.
He has stuck with the hosts' team that beat Guatemala 5-0 and Denmark 1-0 in their last two preparatory matches.
It had been expected Tsepo Masilela would return from injury to take the left-back role but Parreira told a news conference he was not changing the side from last Saturday's match against the Danes.
"We have been working all week with them on tactical formations," the coach said.
The team is: Itumeleng Khune; Siboniso Gaxa, Lucas Thwala, Bongani Khumalo, Aaron Mokoena; Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Kagisho Dikgacoi, Steven Pienaar, Teko Modise, Siphiwe Tshabalala; Katlego Mphela.

Group D

1. Serbia
2. Germany
3. Ghana
4. Australia

Serbia's back line is as good as one will see at the WC. Not quite so convinced about GK Stojkovic however... Wigan's 2nd choice:ohno:. But they can also attack well w/ talent in the midfield and w/ the likes of tall Zigic ( think England's Crouch) also dangerous on set pieces.

Serbia's youth teams have really estbl. themselves of late...this is an upward trending nation.

Germany has ? regarding striker. It should go to Cacau but get the feeling Low will give Bayern bench jockey Klose the spot.

A no. of folks are touting Ozil to have a breakout South Africa performance...I am thinking this as well. He gives them flair in mid.

GK Neuer was due to be the 3rd choice but due to Enke's suicide & Adler's injury...he's now the no. 1. I am leery as he can be a bit erratic.

Despite some doubts, they are organized and Low has the tactical acumen....and after all, Klose & Podolski always seem to perform better for the NT than their respective club sides.

"Black Stars" in the forecast for Ghana as not having Essien avail. is terrible luck. Muntari health doubts would be a double blow.

Australia made an effortless transition to the AFC. But they're overrated.

GK Schwarzer had a fine season with Fulham but the defenders are plodding and a liability. Cahill & Kewell are their best attacking options but just how fit wiil they be?

Verbeek will have them organized but goals will be hard to come by I suspect. No margin for error for the Socceroos puts way too much pressure on Schwarzer.

Group E

1. Netherlands
2. Denmark
3. Cameroon
4. Japan

Dutch ripped through their group qualifiers. Veteran observers quip that Netherlands play the beautiful game the way it was meant to be but lack collective self-belief. I sense this to be accurate as there is something to be said about cultural peculiarities that manifest themselves in a national team's side.

Not familiar w/ the Eredivisie ( that will change) so not familar w/ GK Stekelenburg.
I've seen a no. of tourneys involving the Dutch youth squads and they have impressive young talent but seem to be suspect in def & that translates to the sr. side.

Mid is tremendous. Plenty of poss capabilities coupled w/ attacking options. Only Spain is better. Robben looks ready to start v. Danes.

Van Persie is healthy at the right time & will be counted on to have a big showing.

Denmark is bit underestimated. They need GK Sorensen to be healthy & apparently he will start v. Netherlands. He would buttress a solid back line.

Bendtner...also inj concerns, along w/ D Kjaer....needs to have a breakthrough WC. Danes are organized and physical but really need to find a finishing touch...and that isn't all that certain.

Cameroon...Eto'o seems to have gotten past the pre-WC drama. Not familiar w/ the majority of the team.

Japan has disappointed w/ Okada's second tenure. His conservative approach has contributed to their goal scoring problems.

GK Kawashima (Kawasaki Frontale) has wrested the first choice position from Narazaki. He's above avg...steady if unspectacular. Central defenders are actually fairly tall but old & slow.

Problem for the Blue Samurai is in midfield cohesion as they are transitioning b/w the old guard, as in Nakamura, and the young turks...like Honda. This, of course, is not all to be blamed upon Okada or the players.

Honda played as lone striker in their laast friendly. Maybe playing two strikers might help, namely Morimoto (Catania) & Okazaki.:ohno:

his fysio told the dutch press yesterday that he thinks he's ready for the game against denmark, but its the coach who will decide. robben is a great threat, but holland should win against denmark, even without him.
