Intangibles the silent killer. We are aware that we have to deal with intangibles but do we really understand what an obstacle they pose? You can analyze a game but you can't predict the intangibles. That's one of the reasons I don't bother doing write-ups on games. More times than not it's those unexpected things that determine the winner. Here is a list of all the intangibles I can think of. These are things that may happen in games and they can have a direct impact on the outcome. Nothing on the list is something we as players can foresee we just live with them for better or worse.

INTANGIBLES:
1. Pick 6
2. Scoop and score
3. Kick off return
4. Punt return
5. Missed FG
6. Missed Ex Point
7. Safety
8. Fumble
9. Interception
10. Penalties
11. Missed Penalties
12. Poor clock management
13. Wasted timeouts
14. Bad coaching decisions
15. 2 point conversion
16. Weather
17. In game injuries
18. Overtime
19. Hail Mary's
20. Reviews (& reversals)
21. Uncatchable center snap
22. Pulling starters

Now that's 22 things that can change a game. Who hasn't had a bad result directly because of these intangibles? It is not uncommon to have multiple items occur in a game look no further than Clev on Sun. Houston scores 14 and they are getting 7.5. Clev scores no offensive TD's but who wins Clev all because of these intangibles. No one predicted that.

When you feeling like you just can't pick a winner think intangibles - Remember it's hard to have a game without intangibles playing a part and there are so many to choose from ... That's what makes picking winners a real challenge and it's why luck plays such a big roll in success.

Most of that is just somewhat expected game play
Maybe QB injury or weather would count
Something like maybe a pick 6 with 5 seconds left and meaningless to the game but impacts the spread might count but pick 6 in general is just game play

The question isn't what affects the outcome of a game. The question for us as handicappers is what's predictable that will affect the outcome of a game.

Good luck JM.

So true! You forgot one, when the ref tackles a db going for a pick, and the resulting tackle leads to a wr td, like the Minny-Wash game! I'm currently 1 return/defensive td for and 7 against!! I wish this number will eventually even out, but it never does.

23#. The PREVENT DEFENSE- that always prevents the leading team from winning!.

I always check referee assignments. sharpfootballanalysis.com How they could effect the side or total with their style of refereeing. Some refs that are let em play type refs are very difficult to bet Overs on as they really let the Dbacks get away with assault without a flag.Refs that call a lot of O holdings are obviously bad for Overs.Refs just like people have tendencies and I believe its always worth a look to see who is reffing the game that you have an opinion on.Luck is a hugh factor like Hache said, you hope that balances out for you, where you have as much good luck as you do bad.Unfortunately if you are on the right side of a game more often than not, I think you end up with a little more bad luck than good.As i think its a little bit of math.On the right side things are going good in the game more often than the game looking bad.So Luck is going to effect those games that are looking like winners and all of a sudden something unlucky happens in the game that turns it into a loser. So if you seem to have more times when luck goes against u than good, you are probably a pretty good handicapper.imo Don t sleep on the refs, they have history and tendencies.
