Oakland Raiders linebacker Bill Romanowski was sued Thursday by teammate Marcus Williams, seriously injured when they fought during practice.
The suit, filed in Alameda (Calif.) County court, seeks unspecified damages for alleged battery, negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
Romanowski instigated the fight Aug. 24 when he ripped off Williams' helmet and punched him in the face, breaking a bone around his left eye. The fracture put Williams on injured reserve -- ending his season before it began.
No criminal charges were filed. The 37-year-old Romanowski -- known for fanatical behavior during 16 seasons in the NFL -- apologized publicly several days later.
Giants bow out
The New York Giants and their landlord have abandoned their efforts to bring the 2008 Super Bowl to Giants Stadium and will offer a "far superior" bid for the 2009 NFL championship game.
The announcement by the Giants and the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority came less than four weeks after they reached an agreement on renovating Giants Stadium, with an eye toward landing the Super Bowl.
That leaves Arizona, Washington and Tampa as the three candidates for the 2008, which will be awarded Oct. 30 at a league meeting in Chicago. The 2009 game is tentatively scheduled to be awarded in March 2005.
Sapp to debate issues
Warren Sapp and Michael Strahan will debate football issues each week on "NFL Total Access," the prime-time program on the NFL Network that begins broadcasting next month.
"NFL Total Access," the weeknight show debuting on Nov. 4, will feature Sapp, the Pro Bowl defensive tackle for Tampa Bay, and Strahan, the New York Giants' Pro Bowl defensive end, each Thursday night. The pair will appear from their team headquarters to discuss league topics.
Around the league
Rams: Robert Thomas will start at middle linebacker for the Rams on Sunday after missing a week with a groin injury.
Bengals: Cincinnati changed backup receivers, waiving Lawrence Hamilton and signing Kevin Walter off the practice squad.
Browns: Guard Shaun O'Hara underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and will be sidelined for at least three weeks.
Giants: Cornerback Will Peterson might miss the rest of the season with a stress fracture in his lower back. There is a chance Peterson could play again in six to eight weeks, but doctors have also told him it might take up to three months to heal.
